The Circle - Zeiss

The Circle - Zeiss

For a while my creativity felt stale and it didn’t incite the excitement it used too. There was something missing with what I was doing and I couldn’t understand what it was. I felt I was living life in a circular motion. Doing the same things and experiencing the same things. I needed a change. When I wrote this film these were the thoughts that were actively on my consciousness. A lot of things when I’m creating films or art I just have a feeling. And often times I for that moment lack the vocabulary to explain what it is I’m feeling. I use film a form of visual poetry. It’s a vessel that helps me make sense of what it is that I’m experiencing. I hope when you watch this you felt something. And it helped you make sense of something you may not have had words for. Or at the least it made you feel something other than the circular emotions you’ve been experiencing. “The Circle” is just a line but something profound happens when that line bends and takes on new forms. Slick Talk

Slick Talk

Feeling the pressure of an important meeting with a potential music manager, Kiki struggles with her identity as an outsider in the Chinese-American community, a “culture vulture” in the hip-hop world, and a potential sellout for mainstream success.

Menagerie

Menagerie

Day after day, inhabitants of the Menagerie play out their daily lives like clockwork. Menagerie is a study of the daily motions and mundane tasks of contemporary city life. Featuring hundreds of looping animated characters, the film explores how the repetitive actions of our day-to-day lives quickly spiral into an endless kaleidoscope of abstraction. Violet Gave Willingly (2022) by Claire Sanford

Violet Gave Willingly (2022) by Claire Sanford

Violet Gave Willingly immerses us in the colourful world of textile artist Deborah Dumka, inviting viewers to witness the unflinchingly intimate details of her artistic process and inner life. Nestled in a cluttered studio by the sea, we witness an artist at work on a project that delves into a past unspoken. An intimate study of the nature of memory and how it can both harm and protect, the film lays bare the continuum and legacy of gender-based discrimination, sexism, and sexual violence. More than a portrait, the film is a conversation. As mother and daughter struggle to give voice to their experiences, power radiates from speaking uncomfortable truths. The film has played at over a dozen festivals across the globe, including: TIFF Top Ten, IDFA, DOCNYC, Hot Docs, Whistler Film Festival, Dokufest, Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma, Lunenburg Doc Fest, Flying Film Fest (Swiss Air) among others. It has been exhibited in galleries and as part of workshops designed to explore and dismantle the structures of sexism and sexual violence.
