Music & Clowns

Music & Clowns

My brother, Jamie, has a profound learning disability. Despite being close to nonverbal, he demonstrates charisma, a sharp sense of humour, and emotional sensitivity. I team up with my parents to discuss what it is like caring for someone with Down syndrome. We piece together fragments of insight to gain a sense of his inner life, but our differing perspectives reveal as much about our own subjectivity as they do Jamie’s. We rarely see portrayals of the diverse, ordinary lives of people who have Down syndrome (unless we are connected to someone who has it). Much of what we hear instead is based off a medical narrative. As prenatal screening tests improve, the birth rate of people with Downs has fallen. I believe people should be able to base life-changing decisions on accurate information. But I also feel that a diagnosis does not reflect my brother’s human worth. This film attempts to complement the medical narrative with first-hand stories of what it is like to have someone with Down syndrome in your family. Jamie has enriched our lives and I believe a society can be measured by its capacity to nurture those who are most vulnerable. The Walking Fish

The Walking Fish

A tragicomic short film about ambition, perfection and self-acceptance. Directed by Thessa Meijer, the Walking Fish tells the story of an ambitious sea-creature that pursues her dream to join the human world. 2020 Oscars® submission for the Netherlands. YDA 2019 Special Jury Prize and Grand Prix at Ciclope.

Tocatta

Tocatta

The film was conceived loosely as a live action musical animation, reminiscent of the system used in music animation software such as Stephen Malinowski’s Music Animation Machine. Domestic and pertinent objects, common in the still life genre, were sourced and used within a structure mostly defined by the music. The music is the Toccata from the first part of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of his most famous compositions and a startling and surprising piece of music. Often mired in controversy, the authorship of Bach himself was questioned by musicologists from the 1960’s onwards because of the piece’s unusual structure, not seen in music of that time. It is performed by Peter Hurford in the 1976 album, Bach: The Great Organ Works. The film is an exploration on the nature of time, the relentless violence of entropy and creative energy and its relationship to music itself. The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor has a cinematic history going back to the silent film era, when orchestras played music to films. The piece became often used in the horror genre and famously as the opening to the 1970’s film Rollerball. https://ift.tt/385pXqK Credits: Creative Direction & Production: Optical Arts Editor: Matt Cronin VFX Supervisor: Miguel Wratten Colourist: Martin Pryor 1st Camera Assistant: Elliott Lowe Styling: Jamie-Lee Harding

Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?

Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?

I met Jeffrey Gurian when I first moved to New York. After working in restaurants to make ends meet for a few months, I was itching to do anything involving film. I scoured Craigslist applying to everything I saw that looked somewhat related to video production. A few days later I received an email titled, "RE: Nationally Known Comedy Writer Seeks Intern."  Next thing I knew, I was in Jeffrey's Upper East Side apartment being interviewed to edit videos for his Youtube channel, Comedy Matters TV. The walls in his apartment were filled from ceiling to floor with pictures of Jeffrey with every celebrity on the planet. While I only ended up working for Jeffrey out of his apartment for a few months, the experience left an impression on me. About five years later, I was struggling to get a narrative film off the ground. Raising funds is not my specialty. I thought, "Am I going to be stuck making content for brands that I don't believe in and just pursuing my original work instead of actually being able to make it?" Jeffrey popped into my head. I identified with his life long pursuit of comedy fame and wanted to tell that story. I called him the next day and we met at a diner to discuss the possibility of me making a film chronicling his life and work in comedy.  "Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?" is a documentary short film that focuses on the career and life of Jeffrey Gurian, a fixture in the comedy world for the last 40 years. Jeffrey has worked with and around the biggest stars in comedy since the 1980s. From Dangerfield to Burle to Dice, Jeffrey has written for them. He has made films, written multiple books, and now runs a Youtube channel that features red carpet interviews with celebrities. He accomplished all of this while also running his own cosmetic dentistry practice.   The contradiction of his two professions drew attention from almost every news station in New York and he was featured in the New York Times as well. While he has since retired from his dental practice, he is still very much in the comedy world pursuing his childhood dream of being a famous comedian. This film takes a deep dive into that pursuit and tells Jeffrey's story on a very intimate level.  "Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?" had its world premiere on Short Of The Week. Director/Producer/Cinematographer/Editor - Derek Brown Associate Producer - Jacob Salzberg Graphic Design/Illustration/Animation - Rich Schemm Colorist - Frankie Turiano Post Sound Mixer - Gaelan Mullins Music Supervisor - Ethan Converse Original Music - Alex Collier & Lincoln Lute

Black Ice

Black Ice

Black Ice is a personnal project I worked on during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and the confinement. Having to stay home does not mean less creation. It is time to observe and experience elements and details of our daily life that we find at home. I wanted to play with ice, flower and ink and see what kind of universe I can created with the macro and motion timelapse technique. I spent many hours to observe and experiment the ice and how it react with liquids like ink but also, oil, paint and soap. Some effects are hypnotic and surprising. To realise this project, I used a Nikon Z6 with a Atomos Ninja V and the Edelkrone ecosystem. I used 2 lenses: The Nikkor Macro 105mm and the Loawa 24mm. The Felling of Colston

The Felling of Colston

Chronicling the felling of the statue of Edward Colston–a 17th Century slave trader–during a Black Lives Matter protest in Bristol, England, and how this act of rebellion made waves across the UK and the World. June 7th 2020. Sparked by the tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota, 10,000 people took to the streets of Bristol to make a stand against police brutality, discrimination and systemic racism. The statue of Edward Colston was tied, pulled from its pedestal, rolled to the harbour, and poetically dumped into the very port used to transport millions of slaves in the 1700’s. The event trended Worldwide, prompting similar acts across the UK and the World. What does this mean for other statues and symbols of problematic historic figures? How do we remember the past without glorifying the horrific deeds perpetrated by these people? Après le soleil ❊ After the sun (Gianni Bouyeure, 2019)

Aurèle is a glass-blower. Throughout his career, he desperately tries to attain perfection. He builds monumental sculptures that light up when he gets close to his goal. After yet another failure, Aurèle changes his approach and it seems to work. He finally reaches the level of satisfaction that he was searching for in his work. However, being proud of himself and his work in front of others seems more complicated than he thought. HELIN

If an aesthetic object is created without any human purpose, do we witness an accidental product of nature or do we perceive new forms of artificial intentions? The sculpture Helin embodies an organic data mirror emerging from our collective historical heritage. Our technical approach is based upon a novel procedure for Deep Learning in 3D space. The corresponding custom network architecture is trained on 120.000 historical sculptures and generates new alternative bodies 30 times a second. We enable insights into historical, spatial data of human expressions and translate this assembled intelligence into a natural and tangible artefact of heavy dark marble. more: https://ift.tt/3ekuqYZ Credits: • Artistic Direction: Christian Mio Loclair • AI Art: Meredith Thomas • Generative Design: Helin Ulas • Production Management: Celia Bugniot • Management: Thomas Johann Lorenz • Camera: Marco Petracci • Photo: Marco Petracci • Video Production: Ali Naddafi • Sound Composition: Christian Losert • Robot Operations: Tor Art

While we're being forced to re-calibrate, both as individuals and as a society at large, this moment is demanding we create a new paradigm shift in the way we take care of each other. 'PAUSE' was put together during the height of the pandemic in an effort to create a reminder of the power of our communion as we experienced this unique duality of both extreme isolation and extraordinary connectivity in New York during the lockdown. SLOWVENIA - A BikePacking adventure among beavers brought to you through the eyes of the PCR GRAVIER

SLOWVENIA - A BikePacking adventure among beavers brought to you through the eyes of the PCR GRAVIER

In recent years it has become particularly fashionable to hang too heavy saddlebags on too expensive bikes and to push your bike down too steep slopes. In this activity, a group of 9 promising youngsters is doing quite well, and is called the PCR Gravier. As far as I'm concerned, I'm just a synthesized voice here to help you better prepare for your next getaway. If what I say makes no sense, I am not responsible for it. Every year, they look for the best place to go on a beaver adventure and live a week in the great outdoors. To make such a week-long trip a success is no easy task, so to give them the best possible chance, they have developed a manual with 8 crucial lessons for a quality trip. Last summer they went to Slovenia.

MILKOFFEE

MILKOFFEE

MAY 18 2020 A diner in the middle of the desert, two strangers and a glass of latte: these are the elements of “Milkoffee”, an adaptation of one of the short stories of “Crìmenes Ejemplares”, a collection of murder chronicles by Max Aub. Told in first person, the movie tries to visually represent the frustration and inner madness of the narrator, who feels tremendously and inexplicably annoyed by the noise of the teaspoon on the glass of the other one. This short was crafted by a group of four Cinema and Media Engineering students for a thesis project.

In the summer of 2019 I visited Hong Kong for the second time. One night, in the lively night market in West Kowloon, I saw a white man with pink hair leaving a taxi. He was wearing green jumpsuit and it felt like he did not fit in with the crowd. He quickly vanished as he disappeared into one of the old high-rise buildings. Meet Me At The Stairs

Meet Me At The Stairs

Ten years ago at the age of 21, I underwent a procedure that saved my life. A kidney transplant. My father donated one of his kidneys to someone that neither of us knew for me to receive a healthy organ, from another party in return. Before that, I spent the majority of my life gradually progressing towards undetected renal failure which is ultimately what led me to a brief stint of dialysis and then the transplant. During a worldwide pandemic such as the one we currently find ourselves in right now, that very procedure and the medications I take daily to ensure its success, put me in a very vulnerable place. A place that is similar to so many others that are immunosuppressed and at risk at a time like this. Because of these somewhat defining experiences that come with a procedure such as an organ transplant, I have an appreciation for what living with a compromised immune system means. I also have an appreciation for how this daily challenge affects those closest to me, especially at a time like this. I wake up suddenly, night after night, with a new level of anxiety, thinking about whether or not I am going to get COVID-19, and if I do, what will it be like? Will I be able to fight it off and beat it? Or will I be dead in five days, similar to stories that I have read, because of my compromised immune system? Meet Me At The Stairs is a profile piece that features my wife, an essential emergency worker for Toronto EMS. We've been living in isolation from each other for 46 days and even though we are still living in the same house, being so close but still so far comes with its own set of challenges. Created during lockdown, the film explores the anxiety that comes with being an essential worker during a worldwide pandemic and coping with the sacrifices you must make to keep your family members safe. The film is dedicated to my wife and all essential workers that are making a sacrifice during this uncertain time. El Mago Georges

El Mago Georges

We aren't only created with free will, but also with responsibility. The responsibility to listen to our gut feelings, follow our intuition, the wise part of us. According to the old definition, a magician is a wise person. So we can all be magicians if we are brave enough.

Saturday Afternoon

A few blocks from where I live on the edge of the East Village is an old storefront with curtains that stay permanently down. Inside, my neighbor Raymond plays his piano and minds his own business, as he's done in the storefront for the past 50 years that he's lived there. I ran into Raymond during the peak of the quarantine, and he told me that what I'm experiencing right now, is the way downtown Manhattan was in the 70s. The quiet, empty streets are something that he hasn't seen here in a very long time. After weeks inside, I called Kai to film for a few hours one Saturday afternoon, to try and capture the energy that Raymond told me about. starring kai roper directed & shot by josh charow music by kid hastings title by tatum dorrell sfx by romain sturma & camille thomas

After the outbreak of COVID-19 and the beginnings of global lockdown, we sent out a call to animators from around the world to send us a short animation depicting something they have experienced during the pandemic. Over 90 animators sent us their contributions, and this is the second film out of a series of three. While the first film takes us through the motivation to keep each other positive, this film shows the comical side to the roller-coaster ride of emotions, the weird things we end up doing and generally going a bit crazy… Press: https://ift.tt/2SxJadM https://ift.tt/3fey07D https://ift.tt/35uTh8A https://ift.tt/35u2Btm https://ift.tt/2W0U66c Direction/Concept: Studio Desk Kathrin Steinbacher & Emily Downe Music & Sound Design By Phil Brookes Additional Animation/Direction: (Clips in order) 00:14-00:20  Animation: Olga Makarchuk 00:20-00:27  Animation & Sound: Klaas Verplancke (Art) & Arevik d'Or (Animation) 00:27- 00:30  Animation: Rohit Karandadi 00:30- 00:40  Animation & Sound Kamila Szewczuk 00:40- 00:54  Animation: Sam Lane Sound: Wolf Woodcock 00.54 - 01:02 Animation: Luke Frangeskou 01:03-01:10 Animation: Sanjana Chandrasekhar 01:10-01:19 Animation: Faustine Berhault 01:19-01:26 Animation & Sound Kamila Szewczuk 01:26-01:35 Animation: Tetiana Kurbatova 01:35-01:46 Animation: Charlotte Cambon Sound: Flavien Van Haezevelde, Studio BOOM 01:47-02:00 Animation & Sound: Julia Jesionek (vulva) 02:01-02:15 Animation: Capucine Gougelet 02:16-02:24  Animation & Sound: Anna Lena Spring 02:24-02:28 Animation: Katy Daft 02:29-02:43 Animation: Girls in Motion 02:43-02:50  Animation: Martha Halliday 02:50-02:53  Animation: Olive Lagace 02:53-03:05  Animation: Omar Zine Eddine El Idrissi 03:05-03:12  Animation: Chiara Sgatti 03:12-03:24  Animation: Anna Chwal 03:24-03:29 Animation: Emilia Voltti 03:29-03:45  Animation: Hana Tintor 03:45-03:55  Animation: Alara Kara 03:55-04:00  Animation: Daria Zadecka 04:00-04:07 Animation: Emmie Thompson 04:08-04:15  Animation: Sundeep Toor 04:15-04:26  Animation: Matti Vesanen 04:26-04:37 Animation: Zootghost Sound: Sam Perkin 04:37-04:50 Animation: Kathrin Steinbacher 04:50-05:99  Animation: Zohar Dvir

The Blood is at the Doorstep (Official Feature Documentary)

The Blood is at the Doorstep (Official Feature Documentary)

The Blood is at the Doorstep is a story about one family’s quest for answers, justice, and reform after Dontre Hamilton is shot 14 times and killed by a Milwaukee Police Officer responding to a non-emergency wellness check. Filmed over the course of three years in the direct aftermath of Dontre's death, this intimate verite documentary follows his family as they channel their grief into community organizing in an attempt to reset the narrative. Offering a painfully realistic glimpse inside a movement born out of tragedy in what the Hollywood Reporter calls "a clear-eyed film that finds hope within terrible circumstances, and strength within heartbreak." And it’s simultaneously astounding to see the strength and the genius of people who insist on coming together, continuing to love and support each other in a world where such acts put them at such great risk." https://ift.tt/2mFUEMO The Hollywood Reporter: "An urgent report from the frontlines of an American Crisis": https://ift.tt/2zcKc8U Dir: Erik Ljung Editor: Michael T. Pfeffer & Sophia DeBaun Shot by Carlos Cardona Edit by Sophia DeBaun & Carlos Cardona AC, Loader, 8mm Sharp Shooter Rand Rosenberg Talent: Lucas Monroe & Michael Barrett Made in association with One Love Picture Classics Listen/Download/Watch - https://ift.tt/2xQDRiM https://ift.tt/35GeSLw Follow - https://ift.tt/2yIoucm... https://ift.tt/2lydd6y The Hold That Weight film is about the work that goes into trying to re-acclimate to home life and society when released from prison; battling thoughts, trying to navigate a way forward; and battling a prison system that traumatizes those it incarcerates and then gives no thought to what happens after people are released. It is also about the people that rally behind you, support you, make sure you feel love, everything you were missing when you were incarcerated. What does it really look like to support each other in difficult times? The Hold That Weight film is loosely based on the real lives of the 2 main actors, Lucas Monroe and Michael Barrett. The film’s director Daniel Pfeffer and the 2 main actors have known each other pretty much their whole lives growing up in Ithaca, NY – this film was shot in Ithaca in the places where they live and work. In Lucas's words: “Being a returning citizen is something that needs to be addressed so much more - it's not talked about openly as much as it needs to be. We need to show people with family lives, who are struggling and make mistakes and should be allowed to learn from those mistakes and grow."
