100-year businesses don’t exist. The retail industry is dead. In the rugged White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, Lahout’s has remained open 365 days a year since 1920. While e-commerce and conglomerates have stripped the country of local, independent retailers, a family of Lebanese immigrants have prevailed for a century, beating the Great Depression, World War II, the Dot Com Crash and Great Recession. With a family and staff who have spent their entire lives working at the shop, we arrive at their centennial at a vulnerable time. The patriarch (Joe Lahout Sr) is in an intense fight with father time. Having skied, worked-out and traveled well into his 90’s, Joe has begun to struggle with his daily rehab and medication schedule, while the 4th generation (Anthony Lahout), has returned home to help with his recovery. As Anthony begins spending time with him and he sees his grandfather in a different light as well as question the source of the store's success. As we approach 2020, the reality of life-without-Joe is introduced to the Lahout family and staff, sending shockwaves throughout the ranks. River is an audiovisual crafting brand. This Year we sponsored the Motion Plus Design for their sixth event in Paris. On this occasion we were asked to introduce our studio. But rather than deliver another showreel we decided to create a manifesto video where we could play with some funny storytelling through our different baselines. We used the showreel codes to create the same type of dynamic except that each shot was created for the film with various artistic directions. Warp Records present ‘Smokers Delight’ – a short film celebrating 25 years of Nightmares On Wax's seminal 1995 LP. ‘Smokers Delight’, Nightmares on Wax’s second album, was one of a handful of records to define a generation. It took George Evelyn from his electronic-genre-blending debut 1991’s ‘A Word of Science’ into releasing his much-loved downbeat blend of soul, hip-hop, dub and timeless club sounds, for which he has become renowned. Interviewed in Joe Muggs’ book Bass, Mids, Tops; NOW expands on his inspiration and headspace at the time of creating ‘Smokers Delight’: “It was all the things that turned me on: reggae, soul, and through sampling and digging, hip hop was the backbone. That’s why you’ve got the dub influences on there, and the lovers rock soulful influence in there. That album is the DNA of everything that turns me on musically. At the time people used to say to me, “You’ve definitely got a Nightmares sound,” I’d be like, “Really, what do you mean?” But where I am now today, I think I understand that from a vibrational and spiritual point of view. Stag is a live action photography / CG / VFX hybrid film, it's been my main personal project for late 2019 / 2020. Plates were shot at various locations around the Lake District in Cumbria, Crombie in Scotland, and Highgate Woods in London. Additional macro photography footage is used at various places. Forest sounds recorded on location. CG was made using Houdini for 3D (rendered in Redshift), Nuke for 2D. We need to be the strong winds that have carried our ancestors across the seas. We need to be the strong winds pushing our leaders forward as they come up against the might of these big bullying nations. We need to be the strong winds, that Matagi Mālohi, that bring the change our people need to see."
