Of Memory and Debris

Of Memory and Debris

Of Memory and Debris is a personal portrait of the director’s grandfather (Opa, 94) and his wife's grandfather (Ababo, 81) who stayed back in Venezuela after most of their family emigrated due to the economic crisis and violence in the country. Opa lives with his wife Oma, who has been suffering from Alzheimer's for the past ten years, as he tries to comfort her in her final days. Everyday Ababo scrapes the sewers of his abandoned gold processing factory to accumulate gold remnants and afford a trip to Canada. His goal is to attend his granddaughter’s wedding. An intimate character diptych, OF MEMORY AND DEBRIS tells the story of an unseen generation — the grandparents left behind by the largest exodus in Latin America's recent history. Tiger (Shark) King

Tiger (Shark) King

More than 20 years ago conservationist and diver, Jim Abernethy, discovered the affectionate side of large predatory sharks after removing a fishing hook from the jaws of a tiger shark. Since then he has removed thousands of hooks from sharks in the warm, clear waters off the Bahamas and has brought divers to safely encounter these apex predators with the goal of demstigmatizing sharks as mindless killers.

Salman Toor's Emerald Green | Art21 "New York Close Up"

Salman Toor's Emerald Green | Art21 "New York Close Up"

How does a painter put freedom and vulnerability on the same canvas? In a light-filled Bushwick studio, painter Salman Toor calls his father to let him know that "one of the best things that’s ever going to happen, ever" is on the horizon. Toor is at work on a new figurative painting, "Museum Boys" (2021), to be presented alongside canvases by Johannes Vermeer at Frick Madison in New York City. The painting is the latest in the artist’s alternately tender and comic exploration of his own highly cultured queer community, imagining moments of quiet intimacy as well as scenes of public violence and repression. Moving from his home country of Pakistan to the United States in 2002, the artist had his first experience in an openly gay community while also coming under the influence of Western figurative art traditions like Dutch Golden Age painting. Working on multiple small canvases at the the same time, Toor paints images of queer sociality: "femme" and fashionable young men dancing together in living rooms, gathering at bars, and grooming before mirrors. Many of the works are colored in a signature emerald green, evoking for Toor the nocturnal glamor and fantasy of a freely gay life, and often contain what the artist slyly calls "fag puddles," offered as "heaps of objects and tubular body parts." Toor's phrasing is an apt description of the central figure depicted in "Museum Boys," who lies in a vitrine with a urinal, a high heel, and other more ambiguous objects strewn over their sleeping body. Both "fabulous, and a bit pathetic," the tragicomic figure is rendered with the same tender, light touch and cartoonish forms the artist uses throughout his works, mirroring his own emotional identification with—and critical distance from—the figures he paints. Toor’s paintings are often inspired by his own community of queer friends, including fellow artist Doron Langberg, whose work is exhibited along with Toor's as part of "Living Histories: Queer Views and Old Masters," on view into January 2022 at the temporary location of The Frick Collection on Madison Avenue. Strolling through the museum's galleries together, the two friends are energized to see their work placed next to paintings by artists who are so central to the Western art canon. But Toor’s creative sensibility and personal history adds a uniquely contemporary layer. Raised in a country forever altered by European colonialism and educated in those same Western traditions, Toor’s inclusion at the Frick Madison feels particularly "important and poetic"—a return in a cycle of influence and transformation that began centuries ago. Salman Toor (b. 1983, Lahore, Pakistan) lives and works in New York City. Learn more about the artist at: https://ift.tt/3DqtA9i CREDITS | "New York Close Up" Series Producer: Nick Ravich. After dedicating 26 years of his life to the aerospace industry, he could have comfortably retired to a sedentary life in a big house, but he opted instead for a nomadic life in his van—long before #vanlife became a hipster trend and hashtag. More than a decade after his retirement, Bierly is still on the road, chasing his dream of riding as much United States singletrack as he possibly can until his own time on the Earth runs out.

BANTU WAX

BANTU WAX

Serene and chaotic; untouched and urban; rich, poor, old, new, sacred, sexy, wise, fast and funny — Africa: the continent some thought to be static was just unshakable. Since its birth, Bantu has been made In Africa, by Africans, sustainably & fairly, and that will never change. What has changed is Africa... With over 1 billion people, more than half under 20 years of age —Africa today is quite literally the future of the world — and the future of the world is made in Africa. Inspired by Africa’s transition from Dark Continent to Bearer of Light, tales of the mermaid goddess of oceans Mami Wata, and a passion for surfing, Bantu merges the rich history of African art and textiles with Africa's deeply rooted surf culture. Bantu is real beach-wear from the real Africa.  Directed by Lea & Roberto Colombo Edit by Will Town @ Modern Post Colour by Joseph Bicknell @ Company 3 Animation by ANA Projects Sound Mixing by Daniel Lidchi Creative by Look Studios Creative Director Brendan Dunne Styling by Isabella Meija-Bruton Featuring Babou Gueye, Ibra Samb, Yoro Ciam, Papa Diallo #surfafrica #afrosurf

Janek Murd - AVA

AVA is an experimental 3D animated music video for Janek Murd - an Estonian musician and composer. Ava explores the constant cycle of life - be it a breath of air, passing of a day, a full turn of the year, or a journey from one's birth to death.  AVA (meaning 'opening' or 'to open' in Estonian) opens with flashes in the darkness and then follows different ideas of what one does with the suddenly gifted freedom and curiosity of finding out, where it will all end up when the cycle comes to a close. AVA is the first single from Janek Murd's new album 'VIIV'. You can listen and support the artist on Bandcamp: https://ift.tt/2ZRuGfs For stills and additional content, visit our Behance page: https://ift.tt/2Yt6rE1 Music by Janek Murd Designed, Directed & Animated by Joosep Volk & Maido Hollo TOLM 2021

WWF - We Can't Negotiate with Ice

WWF - We Can't Negotiate with Ice

We follow the story of a young polar bear which tries to survive in the increasingly melting Arctic environment. In the film, as in real life, Arctic sea ice is melting quickly “changing the Arctic ecosystems forever, causing destruction around the planet.” This is a stark reminder that world leaders need to act now. We used an innovative combination of 3D-Printing, Mould-Making, and Ice-sculpting to create 500 unique polar bear ice-sculptures that were then used to create the stop-motion animation. More than 1000 liters of ice were used to create the polar-bear sculptures and environment. The film, which took a year to produce, was created by NOMINT co-founder Yannis Konstantinidis, in collaboration with Marcos Savignano and Jua Braga, with music by Ted Regklis. Underground Lovers

Underground Lovers is a story about love and obsession, with a dramatic end. Inspired by science fiction cinema and Japanese erotic culture, it has the structure of a real feature film condensed in just over 4 minutes. A man and a woman go through a night of excess until they lose control, among food, drugs, sex and the neon lights of Tokyo music: C'mon Tigre feat. Mick Jenkins

Earth To Cop

Earth To Cop

Earth to COP presents an eyewitness portrait of climate change. Using dramatic mobile phone footage from around the world, this short film shows the extent of damage caused by the change in our climate, contrasted with the beauty of Earth - what is at stake and what our leaders need to protect. It underlines that we have seen some progress, but we need further and faster action. The composer of the music for the film, Steven Price is an Academy Award-winning composer. In 2014 his groundbreaking score for Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity won him the Academy Award and Critics' Choice Award. The Earth to COP film was independently produced by Harder Than You Think and is a partnership with Bloomberg. The film will be widely distributed, including through a principal partnership with Bloomberg, a global partnership with WWF and with TikTok, who share the ambition to help bring Earth to COP to a worldwide audience. It will also be played on digital screens across the UK. www.earthtocop.org #EarthToCOP © 2021 HTYT Ltd Producer: Barnaby Spurrier Director: Matt Houghton Editor: Abolfazl Talooni Executive Producer: Charlotte Todman Composer: Steven Price Archive Producer: Aisling Conboy Production Manager: Paris Faro Senior Researcher: Calum Campbell Researcher: Kirsty Asher Audio Post Production Studio: String and Tins Supervising Sound Editor: Will Cohen Sound Effects Editor: Kaspar Broyd Re-Recording Mixer: Lawrence Kendrick Audio Post Producers: Eimear Ní Ghuaire, Alina Miroshnichenko Picture Post Production Studio: Framestore Post Production Producers: Sara Beckman, Jake Saunders Data Services Manager: Nick Rafferty Post Production Senior Editor: Carey Williams Flame Artist: Luigi Russo Head of Grade: Steffan Perry Digital Assets Editor: Nic Lowicz Graphic Design: North Studios Offline Edit Facilities: Azimuth Post Production Captions and BSL Production: Cambridgeshire Deaf Association BSL Translator: Daryl Jackson Translation Presented by TransPerfect Accessibility Consultant: Sinéad Burke Accessibility Consultant: Haben Girma

Ten Degrees of Strange, a music video for Robert Macfarlane and Johnny Flynn

Ten Degrees of Strange, a music video for Robert Macfarlane and Johnny Flynn

WINNER, Best Commissioned Animation, Ottawa International Animation Festival 2021 “Some animations leave even the seasoned animator wondering, “How did they do that?” For its masterful use of clay on glass, its elegant command over spatial transitions, and its rich portrayal of shifting perspectives and characters, the Jury awards the prize of Best Commissioned Film to Ten Degrees of Strange, a music video by Lynn Tomlinson, for Johnny Flynn and Robert Macfarlane.” Anne Koizumi, Jodie Mack, and Kang Min Kim, Competition Shorts Jury, Ottawa International Animation Festival 2021 May 6, 2021 sees the release of the extraordinary video by US clay-animation artist Lynn Tomlinson, to accompany ‘Ten Degrees of Strange, the lead single from Lost in the Cedar Wood – the fifth album from Johnny Flynn, written in collaboration with his friend Robert Macfarlane. Johnny and Robert say: "‘Ten Degrees of Strange’ is a song about trying to outrun anxiety, seeking joy and strength in landscape and movement. We fell in love with Lynn’s work after coming across it by chance. Her unique clay-on-glass animation technique lends itself so beautifully to the themes and rhythms of the song. Clay runs as a motif through our album – it is the material of transformations and re-figurings, and it formed the ancient tablets on which the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of our song-writing inspirations, was first recorded. So it made perfect sense to ask Lynn, an artist working miracles with clay, to create our video. She’s made a minor masterpiece, we think: a music video like no other." Lynn Tomlinson comments, "One of the unexpected benefits of the pandemic is that isolation forces us to find creative ways to work together, such as this international collaboration, devised entirely through emails and video chats. Robert and Johnny reached out to me about the possibility of creating a film to accompany their song. As a medium, clay holds a lot of power — its malleability allows me to transition fluidly from scene to scene, much as the natural world shifts and evolves over time. In many ways my clay on glass animation is naturally suited for telling stories about the passage of time, evolving perspectives, and cycles in nature. ‘Ten Degrees of Strange’ is a wonderful song, full of energy and nuance, and though I listened to it hundreds of times as I worked, it never lost its magic."
