We embarked August 2017 expecting to live a romantic long train journey, but it wasn’t only that: we enjoyed 2 weeks of absorbing and great experiences, both on the train and in the cities we visited. We departed from Moscow and stopped in Ekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Baikal Lake and Ulan-Ude, the formerly closed city in which we took the Trans-Mongolian route to UlaanBaatar to after visit the spectacular Mongolian countryside. 101 years after it was completed, the Trans-Siberian still keeps the tranquility and nostalgia of an historical ride. -- A film by J.J. I was fascinated by the view of the paint flowing down the skin. Under the macro lens it looks like satellite images where the folds of the skin looks as a riverbed along which multicolored paints flow. I poured metallic and fluorescent paint on the hands, lips and nipples. I worked on this project for 4 months. During the late-’80s, two groups of teenagers from neighboring areas of Brooklyn came together to form a boosting (shoplifting) crew with a common goal— accumulate as much Polo Ralph Lauren as possible, by any means possible. Known as the Lo Lifes, they dressed themselves in the finest garments stolen from every upper-class department store in the tri-state area, while living a reality that was the complete opposite of what Ralph Lauren represented. To the authorities the Lo Lifes were criminals, but to themselves and people on the streets, their actions signified something else. They aspired to be something greater, and empowered themselves by taking something that wasn’t meant for them and making it their own. For the past five years Lo Life founder Thirstin Howl the 3rd and photographer/filmmaker Tom Gould have been documenting this culture. Interviews, archival pictures, and recent portraits of key players make up the first-ever book recounting how a group of kids in Brooklyn went on to influence mainstream rap stars and birth a sub-culture of boosters and collectors of vintage Ralph Lauren worldwide. It's about the fragile things we hold precious, trying to hold on to, but who will inevitably fade away, vanish or break like porcelain. The animation was pencilled on paper on a lighttable and then inked with brush and a light black ink and some gray inkwash, then arranged in a videosequencer frame by frame. What does it mean to be self-determining in America? And what does achieving the American Dream really feel like? Not everyone gets to answer that question for themselves, and some who do may take it for granted. In Cumberland, Maryland, disappearing industry over the last 30 years has left the city economically depressed and half-deserted. The city’s new mayor has taken it upon himself to inspire a revitalization, and his plan starts with buying up homes in The Rolling Mill, a once vibrant neighborhood stricken by the same ills as the city. With every willing seller who leaves The Rolling Mill behind, the mayor’s plan to change Cumberland’s fortunes by building a new chain restaurant progresses. But as the face of the neighborhood they love changes so drastically, a steadfast group of long-time Rolling Mill residents have refused to relent to the city. Director: Dillon M. The Haight-Ashbury of 1967 was a place of endless possibility: new ways of living, an influx of ideas, and political and cultural revolution were in the air. And yet amidst this “anything goes” scene, one band still stuck out as an anomaly. The Ace of Cups didn’t set out to be an all-girl band. The group’s original five members — Mary Gannon, Marla Hunt, Denise Kaufman, Mary Ellen Simpson and Diane Vitalich — came together guided by the communal spirit that blanketed Summer of Love-era San Francisco. Up to that point, most all-female bands had worn matching outfits and played cover songs. But with original songs that reflected their circumstances, the Ace of Cups played with groups like The Band, Jefferson Airplane, and even Jimi Hendrix, an avowed fan. Despite their impact in San Francisco, in the intervening years the Ace of Cups were relegated to footnote status, all but written out of history books. But now, having kept in touch, four of the five original band members are about to enter a new chapter. Watch above to follow their journey. – Text by Kevin L. Today I want to share a new video about a special place which evokes contradictory feelings. It’s impossible to not be entranced by the beauty of the Kremenchuk reservoir. At the same time, many hate it as a manmade imposition. It’s creation from 1956 to 1959 forced the residents of over 200 villages to abandon their homes without any assistance or compensation. On top of that, imagine the the feelings associated with knowing that the place of your birth, the place where your life’s memories are built has been literally washed off the face of the planet. In total, 212 villages were flooded and 133 people moved out of the valley. But this video isn’t about those people and their fate, but about the feelings, the emotions, that the water elicits. Today the Kremenchuk reservoir is the largest in Ukraine with an area of 2252 km2 and a volume of 13.5km3 Despite knowing their history, I can’t help but admire these landscapes. They inspire me. P.S. This video was unplanned. The large majority of the footage was filmed incidentally at different times over the course of the last year. Today it practically assembled itself into the short video before you now. Enjoy!
