The Swarm Chaser

Last year a swarm of honey bees landed right behind my backyard, so I searched the internet looking for answers on what to do. I came across the Swarm Hotline via portlandurbanbeekeepers.org. I called the number and within 10 minutes a super enthusiastic beekeeper named Mandy called me back. Luckily she lived pretty close and came right away. I asked if I could film her catching the bees and she was totally down. After filming the bees, I came back with this absolutely gorgeous footage of bees in slow-motion. I figured there had to be more I could film of Mandy and her beekeeping. So when the next swarm season came, I contacted Mandy asking her to do a little documentary on her process. This is the result of that. It's a joy of mine to find someone so passionate about their work, whether it be in photography, painting, crafting, woodworking or bee-keeping. Mandy's infectious and inviting personality drew me in and kept me wanting to document her process even more. There is still more of a story to tell, but for this swarm season, this will do for now. In 2015, the community of Islamberg discovered that a Tennessee minister was plotting the deadliest attack on US soil since 9/11 against their village. Why have Americans heard nothing about him, and why has the safety of this community been ignored? On 10 April 2015, the FBI quietly arrested Robert Doggart, a white, 63-year-old Christian minister, after they discovered he was plotting an attack against Islamberg, a small African American Muslim community in upstate New York. Inspired by Fox News claims that the community was a terrorist training camp, Doggart discussed firebombing a mosque and a school in the village, and using assault rifles and a machete to murder the residents. No terrorism charges were brought against Doggart. No national news outlets covered his arrest, and one month after he was taken into custody, a judge released him on bail. As Doggart's case went before an all-white jury, White Fright examined the US’s inconsistent system of national security, the media’s role in exacerbating terrorist threats, and the failure to protect vulnerable communities from racist attacks. Sounds and motifs flow in and out throughout the song, sometimes deliberately detuning, giving a feeling of uneasiness. This uneasiness links to the song’s emotion, the subject of which touches on family, love and its peripheries. This song has references to the aesthetics of trip-hop, jazz and Dub, with “instrumental inversion and ghostly voices, distant horn sections, odd perspectives, deep illusions and unexpected noises” [David Toop]. Perfecting this song came from the genius ears of Producer John Tonks, who has worked with many artists I admire from Tricky, to Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry. Georgios Cherouvim The visuals of the video are generated algorithmically and feature visually complex patterns that emerge through the simulation of a self organizing behavioral system. Such patterns appear in nature and the brain is tuned to categorize them as organic, which also carries an inherited feeling of unease. This is used in the video as a vehicle to reflect on the emotions of the song. Taking the lead from the lyrics, the patterns evolve and shift between ambiguous shapes to the recognizable form of the two faces, an elegant interplay between synthesis, metamorphosis and decomposition of organic patterns and the human figure. The video was shot and edited as normal and then used to drive the behavior of a multi agent based system, obeying a set of simple rules and forces. The most characteristic behavior is the slime mold (Physarum Polycephalum) which creates a distinct network of interconnected branches. Over the years slime mold has fascinated many scientists and artists. Even though Physarum Polycephalum is a single cell organism, it exhibits a remarkable sensory-motor behavior and has the ability to create complex networks while searching for nutrients. Despite the lack of a central nervous system, it is able to effectively locate, migrate towards sources of food and over time optimize its complex network of interconnected branches, to effectively transport the nutrients over its constantly changing body. The system was implemented in Touch Designer, with the core logic coded in GLSL with compute shaders and can also be performed in real time. When my friend Antoine hired me to shoot commercial work in Utah back in April of this year, I figured this was a golden opportunity to do it. The location and timing were perfect to stay a few extra days and work on a fun personal project for which we had total creative freedom. We traveled through the desert in an RV for 7 days, hiked, ran, rode, jumped, screamed and laughed from dawn to dusk; classic indie filmmaking. Directed, shot, edited and graded by myself.

This is the first in an ongoing series where we take four photographers, send them out into the world, and see what they bring back. The idea is, while they're all travelling to the same destinations, each photographer will have a different take on his surroundings, providing us with four completely different points of view. For this first outing, we went to the South Island of New Zealand and met with Kiwi photographers Jake Mein, Nick Rapley, Jereme Aubertin, and Beth Eastell. Everyone loaded into the truck, cameras in hand, and for four days we travelled through the most remote areas of Te Waipounamu, stopping at Wanaka, The Catlins, Dunedin, and then back through Saint Bathans. So here it is, Everywhere Unseen in New Zealand.

TEMPLE is a conceptual monochrome short film, following skateboarder Sammy Montano on a journey through the Balkans and its fallen monuments. It was essential to transcribe them with respect according to our vision, to spiritualize the expression of their magnificent forms, timeless aesthetics and monumental dimensions. Confronting them with skateboarding allowed us to animate this notion of freedom and exploration. Sammy Montano places himself as a central witness, being both the representation of this quest but also its outcome. It represents the doubt that animates each of us in the face of the unknown and this constantly renewed desire to take step in search of the answers to our deepest beliefs. This film is a personal art project, a pure reverence and tribute to these monuments, better known as « Spomeniks » and their legacy. Montaña de Oro State Park encompasses roughly 8,000 acres of fog shrouded coastal hills and coastal bluffs that abut the rocky shorelines of south Estero Bay on Central California’s coast. It’s undeveloped coastline and undulating, rhythmic singletrack offer a quick and easy dream-like getaway for various local and visiting trail user groups. It’s evident enough that the trails here didn’t build themselves, nor did the access to them come easily granted – especially for mountain bikers. The Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers have been instrumental on both fronts. The Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB) is a group of volunteer trail enthusiasts from the Central Coast of California that formally organized in 1989 to help build and maintain multi-use trails in the region, as well as to protect and advocate for mountain bike trail access. Since their inception CCCMB has helped build over 40 miles of new trails and serves as the primary maintenance organization for an extended network of over 100 miles of trails. Together with California State Parks, CCCMB is designing and building a new two-mile trail at Montaña de Oro to enhance connectivity between existing trails, and to improve the user experience for mountain bikers and other trail users. “Santa K performs the latest dystopian short film by the creative duo Pleid St. and Rebeka Arce” ‘Overdose’ is a bunch of ignorant society. It´s a mixture of the anxiety of consumerism, artificial affection and time wasted. What is consumerism provoking inside and outside us? Four different characters represent four ways of consumption: relationships (‘Pleasure’), food (‘Eat junk’), money (‘Waste’) and drugs (‘Dope’). The story shows how each character experiments a body and mind transformation after the consumption. Feel free to interpret what ‘Overdose’ wants to tell you. Is this a culture of consumerism or a culture of manipulation?
