In memory of my father, my grandparents and the inner mountains of Portugal - Trás-os-Montes (2017). I think the best way to tell a story is to speak of something intrinsic to you. The more you know about the subject you are dealing with, the deeper people will connect with the film, by seeing their own reflections in it. This short film blurs the line between documentary and fiction, since it is based on a true story, from my own grandparents, but it could be anybody’s story - in this case, a woman in Macau. The universality of storytelling is what pushes me to insert this tiny narratives on a much broader subject that me and Vhils have been tackling. And that is, generally speaking, the pace at which the world is moving today. It has sped up dramatically from 20 years back. And while that has brought us infinite positive things and progress, it also created new questions and paradigms. Is the world still a big place? We take 3 hours to drive 300kms, but we can send a photograph to the other side of the world in one second. Are distances getting smaller? Is the world shrinking? Are the gaps between us getting smaller? Or are we drifting apart? We’re constantly texting, talking, posting about everything and anything, but are we really communicating most of the times? And maybe more importantly - is anybody really listening? As a curiosity, the only super 8 shot that is used in this film portraying a woman and her baby (a big friend of mine) is actual footage from Macau in late 1970s. Domingos Silva, his father, was always documenting their life in Macau and he kindly sent me a pack of old videos and it was with absolute pleasure that I made a small homage to his family and any other family who has lived there in the past. Thank you so much to Sin Ting Yung for translating AND reading my story in cantonese for the third time. It's been 2 years since the first one and I am very grateful for having the opportunity to express myself in cantonese. Thanks to Tiago Silva, Li Chongyu and Locanda Films for being an indispensable help on local production while in Macau and helping me get whatever I needed when I needed. Yarchen Gar, officially known as the Yaqên Orgyän Temple, lies in an isolated valley 4000 m above sea level in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Due to the remoteness of the institute and the bad condition of roads leading there, Yarchen Gar sees very few tourists. Officials often prevent foreigners from entering the institute or staying there overnight. It is reported to have 10 000 monks and nuns (most of the inhabitants are nuns), making it possibly the largest monastery in the world. These images are rare and they will be part of a larger project. In loving memory of my dad, Paolo Chiesa died suddenly on October 2016, when I was in Yarchen Gar.

The Violence of a Civilization Without Secrets
For the third and final contribution to Contour 8 Biennale, inhabitants has commissioned Adam Khalil and Zack Khalil in order to host an urgent reflection on indigenous sovereignty, the undead violence of museum archives, and post-mortem justice. Filmmakers Adam and Zack Khalil, in collaboration with artist Jackson Polys, investigate the recent court case that decided the fate of the remains of a prehistoric Paleoamerican man found in Kennewick, Washington State in 1996. The case pitted the Umatilla people and other tribes, who wanted to provide a burial to the “Ancient One”, against two scientists—one of which from the publicly-funded Smithsonian Institute—who wanted to study the “Kennewick Man”. In order for the claim to fall under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) it became necessary to establish the lineage of these remains. This fight unleashed a controversy with groups attempting to establish white ancestry, and with this seeking to altogether undermine the indigenous sovereignty over land and ancestors and annul centuries of colonial violence. The evolving science of DNA and cranial morphology was grotesquely called in to testify to the purity of the bones' ethnicity, where native claims to embodied knowledge of its origin had little means of addressing the court. Despite all of this, the Umatilla people and other tribes ultimately repatriated the “Ancient One” and he was reburied earlier this year in 2017.

Waves '98
Directed by Ely Dagher The short was awarded the Palme D'or in the short flm category at the closing ceremony on the 25th of May in Cannes, France. Waves ’98 is as much a narrative film as it is a personal visual essay dedicated to Dagher’s hometown, Beirut. The film is an artistic exploration of the director’s current relation with his Lebanon, his home country, projected through the story of a teenager and set in 1998. Since moving abroad to study and work, Ely Dagher has been spending more and more time outside of Lebanon, and his attachment to Beirut Started to become more and more complicated. The overall Narrative of the film is heavily based on Ely’s efforts to understand his changing relationship with the city and it’s life, juxtaposed with the narrative of a teenager’s exciting discovery of this segregated city. Russia was the last trip I did in 2017. I spent three weeks traveling from city to city in the rainy and gloomy weather of Russia. As you know, by the November, Russia is approaching winter and the weather can be quite unpredictable as it was for me. Instead of dwelling on bad weather, I decided to go out and capture the cities of Russia as it is while taking advantage of the approaching winter and went up to the Arctic Circle to witness the northern lights. It was probably one of the cheapest place in the world to do so. After Murmansk, I went down and spent a week each in St Petersburg and Moscow to capture the "Life Out of Balance" of Russian cities. Yes, you are not mistaken. This video was fully inspired by the great documentary, Koyaanisqatsi, Life Out of Balance directed by Godfrey Reggio and the music composed by Philip Glass. Funny enough I actually took all these footages before I even watched the documentary. I'm quite surprise that I was able to accommodate the concept into my travel videos from unplanned footages. :) I hope you enjoy the film and watch out for my next travel video! The Pas-de-Calais : Original version a Timelapse Project We were in charge of this video project that was ordered from the Pas-de-Calais department in the aim of promoting its territory. Waiting for an original and creative idea, we opted in favour of a dynamic video realised in timelapse and hyperlapse only. Across various themes (nature, collective memory, sport …) we went through the Pas-de-Calais for two months in order to get the best of this wonderful area. 3 intense minutes to arouse curiosity and make you feel like discovering or visiting again this extremely rich environment, favourable to breaking your habits and travelling through a strong culture. But then those haunting vocals hit my ears...and blew my mind. It was like a punch deep in my soul. It's hard to explain that feeling when you first hear a song and you immediately fall in love with it. Almost like you've known it all along. I hadn't even planned to start working on this film yet, but I was so inspired that I furiously began to lay down time-lapse clips. I couldn't stop pouring over it. It was last September and I was supposed to be working on Monsoon IV, but I forgot all about it once I heard Ex Makina's "Breathe." It almost felt like it was made for a black and white storm film. About halfway through editing, I knew the song title would be my film title as well. It was so perfect I couldn't believe it. Sometimes for me...when I'm chasing or watching an amazing storm...I'll realize I haven't taken a breath in awhile. Never really thought of it until I heard this song. I love being inspired by other artists. I love soundtracks. I can't imagine the movie Interstellar without that powerful pipe organ soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Music is so important to what I do and I'm so incredibly thankful to husband/wife duo Iain and Rebecca Campbell for writing this amazing song. Thanks to the MusicBed as well for having such fantastic musicians and artists. In early 2017, I put together a film called Pulse that was my first ever black and white time-lapse movie. It was so different and fun, I wanted to do a follow-up this year before the next chase season begins. Breathe is made up solely of storm clips from 2017...either from the spring across the central plains or from the monsoon here in the southwest. Some are favorites, some are just ones I knew would be amazing in monochrome and others I used because they fit the music so well. I also went with a wider aspect ratio on these films to give it more of a cinematic feel. This is also the first film I've ever done in full 8K resolution. I'm super excited about that. You may not be able to watch it in that resolution, but it's there if you can. Otherwise, 4K is a must if you can! I truly hope you enjoy this. For me, I needed something to pass the time and bridge the next few months as I wait for supercells to return to the plains. But honestly, I truly love putting these together. Thanks for all your support in the past and feel free to share! Technical Details: I used two Canon 5DSR's along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.
