Nature has engineered its own actuators, as well as the efficient material composition, geometry and structure to utilize its actuators and achieve functional transformation. Based on the natural phenomenon of hygromorphic transformation, we introduce a specific type of living cells as nanoactuators that react to body temperature and humidity change. The living nanoactuator can be controlled by electrical signal and communicate with the virtual world as well. A digital printing system and design simulation software are developed to assist the design of transformation structure.

Kai is a dancer struggling to perfect her movements. She practices at home, avoids going out for drinks after training, and is endlessly chastised by her dance teacher, all to no avail. This changes when she has a collision with joy, and learns how to let go and express her pleasure freely. Earlier this year, Magnum ice-cream teamed up with i-D to create a short film competition called "Be True To Your Pleasure", inviting emerging filmmakers to send in their short film ideas about personal pleasure and the joy of letting go. The three winners were announced in August and received funding, production support and a mentorship from award-winning filmmaker Xavier Dolan to help make their ideas reality. From the director, Braden Lee: "Tokyo is this futuristic-dystopian metropolis rich in tradition and modernism. My goal was to merge these two themes. Throughout the story we follow two contemporary dancers to the famous Shibuya 5-way crossing. We also observe a mysterious masked figure. This ominous mask comes from a theatrical drama called "Noh" which the Japanese have been practicing since the 14th century. The actual mask you see here is over 400 yrs old and represents an angel - passed down through generations. This snail horror comedy is so scary, it'll shock your shell off! Claude and his friends are out of their element and in a whole lot of trouble when they choose the wrong lettuce for lunch. They must now find their way out of this world of horrors before they end up on the menu! Escargore is the latest third year production from Media Design School's Bachelor of Art and Design (3D Animation and VFX). The project took around four months of intensive work to complete by a group of 22 students.

Winner at D&AD Awards 2015: http://ift.tt/1MaXThy Pete's Story is a true account of a boy that suffered from his mother's violence over his childhood years in the UK. NSPCC and Lovers invited me to create this frame by frame watercolour ink animation to communicate the story’s haunting and delicate atmosphere. NSPCC is the leading children's charity in the UK and is widely known for its long fight for childhood protection. The film was used to reach out potential donors and to create awareness among young people about child abuse and what NSPCC can do to help. The idea was to convey a mixture of fear, solitude and the imminence of violence confined inside this labyrinthic house, in contrast with the green touch points that show potential (but unused, in this case) interfaces between Pete and NSPCC. I worked five months to create this watercolour animation frame by frame, on paper, and then compose it digitally in post production. I’ll be posting a making of soon. When we last shot in Whistler back in 2013 for Partly Cloudy, we approached them with the idea of a giant step-up to step-down and the snow just didn’t cooperate. Snow levels again worked against us in 2014 and we scrapped plans altogether, but this year—despite the challenging winter that the Pacific Northwest experienced—the stars finally aligned and Chris McLeod [film and communications supervisor] and Charles Beckinsale [head park builder] worked to find a location that had the terrain and the snow to accommodate our feature. Charles is a wizard with the cat and ultimately made some tweaks to our design to fit his vision, and the end result was one of the most impressive snow sculptures I’ve ever seen. The lines were so smooth and the aesthetic so unique that we opted to not sheer the wall of the step-over. I know Charles really wanted to cut it, and the feature would have looked 10-times gnarlier, but it was so perfect that we didn’t want to change anything. And we figured we’d save Whistler Blackcomb some money on the already stretched cat budget! About Small World: Go out into the world, they say… see it for yourself! But in an age where any destination is in the palm of your hand- just a click away, what is left to truly explore? Level 1 examines the universal dialect of moving down snow on two feet through a lens of fresh perspective- documenting the outer niches of a sport pushed under the rug by the modern day ski zeitgeist. From the secret valleys of Switzerland, the ancient cities of Estonia, to the rowdy rope-tows of Minnesota- follow us around the globe as we capture skiing in its purest form. Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyum Agha uses light and cast shadow to transform Rice Gallery into a sacred space of her own making that is open to all. “Intersections” is inspired by Agha’s seminal experience of exclusion as a woman from Mosques, a space of community and creativity, while growing up in Pakistan. The wooden frieze emulates a pattern from the Alhambra, a palace where Islamic and Western discourses met and co-existed in harmony, and serves as a metaphor of union. We see the consequences of a lover who is struggling with her partners disease and the person he once was, only to succumb to his demons and dive head first into his addiction. The choreography was created and rehearsed over a period of several days with Tamara, who is known also as the French singer Shy'm rather than a dancer. It was shot in an abandoned warehouse in Paris, formerly used for creating glassware and silverware. GOOD BOOKS: "We Need To Talk About Alice"
"We need to talk about Alice" was commissioned by New Zealand based agency String Theory and created to be part of Good Books' "Great Writers Series," a collection of short films made to promote the non profit organization (www.gogoodbooks.com) which is an online charity book store that sells book and donates all proceeds to Oxfam, an organization that fights hunger and poverty since 1995. In the last few years, a select group of directors have donated their time and knowledge to create animated shorts based on renowned literary works and authors to promote this charity. In 2012, Buck launched the amazing "Metamorphosis", a tribute to author Hunter S. Thompson. Then came "Havana Heat" in 2013, a sensual animation produced by renowned duo McBess and Simon from The Mill. Plenty had the honor of creating the third a 2:30 minute short film for Good Books based on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's adventures in Wonderland" to commemorate the book's 150th anniversary. After a lot of dedication, hard work and passion for what we do, it's our pleasure to introduce "We need to talk about Alice" We'll be posting more about the project soon! But did you know there is a fundamental structure that's lies beneath all these tales of fantasy. Joseph Campbell, a famous mythologist, was the first to discover similarities within all ancient myths. He called it the Monomyth. According to him there are 17 stages in which every hero has to walk through one way or the other. In the hero’s journey 12 of these stages are visualized by using iconic blockbuster movies that follow the same structure of storytelling. In the rush of water spilling from the high mountain peaks of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, surfers are finding standing waves that move with life and never end. This first of two short films is a snapshot of one of the many unique river cultures in the American West. These shorts, along with the stories of others who share that intimate relationship with the world of moving water, will make a short film titled “Living Rivers” to be released at film festivals in spring of 2016.
