Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to Ashes is a film by Taylor Rees and Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker. https://ift.tt/3fdLLlX This film tells the story of avid Star Wars fan and master leatherwork artist, Winfred Rembert, who survived an attempted lynching in 1967. The film also brings to light the extraordinary friendship between Winfred and Dr. Shirley, while she is on a mission to memorialize the forgotten 4,000 African Americans lynched during the Jim Crow era through a special home-going ceremony. To contact Shirley or Winfred, please email ashes2ashesfilm@gmail.com Winfred Rembert grew up in rural Georgia. Raised by his great-aunt, Rembert worked with her in the cotton fields during much of his childhood. As a teenager he got involved in the 1960s civil-rights movement. Jailed for fleeing for his life in a stolen car, nearly lynched and then cut down to serve as an example to others, Rembert was sentenced to 27 years in the Georgia Penal System. Despite the cruel prison circumstances, Rembert wrote letters to his would-be wife Patsy as well as to congressmen, with the hope of gaining early release. He also learned the craft of hand-tooling leather from a fellow-prisoner. After seven years, most of which was spent on chain gangs, Rembert was released from prison, but it wasn’t until 1997, at the age of 51, that he began to work more seriously with leather as his artistic medium, creating tooled and dyed canvases that tell the stories of his life. His paintings have been exhibited at galleries across the country. Rembert is the recipient of a 2017 USA Artists Fellowship, and in 2015 was an honoree of Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative. Rembert’s full-color memoir, CHASING ME TO MY GRAVE: An Artist’s Memoir of the Jim Crow South, is forthcoming with Bloomsbury in 2021. Further information at https://ift.tt/2Xdtj6P. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, MD, MPH – Artist and Creator of Ashes to Ashes - Dr. Whitaker attended Yale University School of Medicine-Department of Public Health and obtained her medical degree form Emory University School of Medicine, the only female African American in her class. A kidney specialist by trade, an artist trained under Leonard Baskin, and a healer by passion, her Ashes to Ashes project was developed to provide hope for a better American future, one in which races of varying color and heritage can understand the importance of each other’s American history, empathize with each other’s sacrifices and tragedies, realize the legacy of impacts from suffered injustices and accept that healing is a process as much a cure. She is currently working on the second phase of A2A: The Noose: Thread of Hate and Resilience. This will center on American history through the lens of Lynching and will include an "International Speak My Name Day" to speak the names of the lynched. The Venture Out Project (https://ift.tt/3hC4OYs) is an organization dedicated to creating inclusive spaces for the marginalized queer community to enjoy the beauty and fun of the wilderness together. Through their backpacking and wilderness trips, participants forge lifelong bonds and make unforgettable memories. Read more on the Co-op Journal: https://ift.tt/2uQcLH3 "I think there's a movement amongst many, many diverse people and groups to say let's make more visible the fact that we have always been in the outdoors, you just haven't known it." - Perry Cohen (he/him/his), Founder of The Venture Out Project “When I'm in nature and I'm backpacking... I feel all the pressure just kind of fall away. I don't have to be someone specific or be likable or be anything. I can just exist and not have to think about it. With The Venture Out Project the experience is being with people like you in your community, who you can relate to and that you can find safety with that you may not have at home.” - Tyler Lerch (they/them), Participant & Youth Instructor at The Venture Out Project

The Skin I'm In

The Skin I'm In

The Skin I’m In is a mixed media art project that uses film, photography and interview to explore the complex relationship between identity and physical appearance. The project aims to further the conversation about identity and acceptance, while exploring the delicate relationship between physical appearance and self perception. The Skin I’m Im is a unique collaboration between filmmaker Adrian Vieni, photographer Anthony Tuccito, hairstylist Trevor Odho and visual artists Dina Roudman & Nicole Charles. The project marries these artists unique styles and mediums to create an immersive art installation that extends beyond a gallery show or webpage. The film is part of a larger gallery presentation that also features large format portrait photography and a print component - a zine that combines more photography and graphic design with long-format interviews with each subject. Jordy

Jordy

My longstanding attraction to surfing has always been through the elegance of style. Watching the way someone can navigate a wave, connecting moves, making every motion look effortless... it's why I see this sport more akin to an artform. And while there are many surfers I admire for their style in the water, Jordy Smith has distinguished himself on a level above all else. Jumping from Hawaii to South Africa to Indonesia this last year, I witnessed Jordy push his surfing to another level, as he paired his talent with his insane personal drive. Being courtside to him surfing, whether sweating on the shores of a jungle atoll or dodging white sharks swimming with my waterhousing... it was like running with the bulls, witnessing a display of raw power and energy only so few have ever achieved athletically. direct/film/edit: Morgan Maassen additional filming: Blake Myers Supported by O'Neill Music by: The Daze "104clouds" SJD "Oscillator" Trees Speak "Witch Wound"

Cyclists by Veljko Popovic, produced by Prime Render Studios

The cycling season is nearing its grand finale. During the final race, the two men in the lead are competing for more than the Grand Trophy; they are fighting for the affection of a lady and fulfilment of their erotic fantasies. Meanwhile, the small port town prepares for the arrival of a large ocean liner and its dashing captain. Inspired by the art of Vasko Lipovac, Veljko Popovic created an animated short marked by unique aesthetics. Painted in vivid colours of summer and with a dash of the erotic, it is a comedy that captures the spirit of a small Mediterranean town. "Cyclists" is this week's Staff Pick Premiere. 6 FIGURE GANG

6 FIGURE GANG

A short documentary for The Face profiling a UK musical collective of six young female DJ’s. -- When six UK DJs and producers drunkenly manifested their desire to earn six figures on a night out, little did they know that within a year they would’ve shelled out their first headline tour as a DJing supergroup. Their name was a no-brainer: 6 Figure Gang. Each member – Jossy Mitsu, Dobby, FAUZIA, Sherelle, LCY and Yazzus – brings their distinctive musical personality to the collective. But they share a passion in high-energy club music, and they find strength in collective action. As 6 Figure Gang blew up in 2019, The Face followed the DJs, producers, radio hosts and labelheads on tour dates in London, Berlin and Norwich. Our cameras caught them chatting about YouTube haters, dismissing KP’s Dry Roasted peanuts for being “boujie” and causing sonic havoc in every rave they entered. Although clubs are closed for the foreseeable future, 6 Figure Gang have already made an impact in the UK dance music scene, and they’ve established a sense of solidarity that’s been nurtured during lockdown. -- director Kate Villevoye executive producer Jennifer Byrne producers Rosanna Gouldman and Adam Lilley dop Anna Gudbrands and Timi Akindele Ajani additional camera GLASHIER camera assistant Dubheasa Lanipekun sound recordist Millie Gray editor Scarlett Bovingdon sound design Ines Adriana colourist Delfina Mayer special thanks Callum Reece

MAY GRAY, JUNE GLOOM

MAY GRAY, JUNE GLOOM

It feels as if the world has been turned upside down. The sun doesn't shine anymore, it just goes through the motions like a goddamn traffic light. And every day is the same day but with a different name tag and "tomorrow" might as well be next week or next month or next year. Elijah McClain played his violin for stray cats because he wanted to comfort them. I can't help but wonder if those cats are gonna miss him. Or if they'll ask themselves why he doesn't come around anymore, or if they'll feel lonely without him. I wish I had a chance to hear his music. The world is a wretched and miserable piss pot and it feels as if we're barely dipping our toes into just how much pain and suffering there truly is out there. And it's just getting so damn hard to feel hopeful about anything anymore. But I want to. I really do. I see the people in the street and the people doing their best to just do their best and they all give me this cautious feeling that maybe things can get better. Maybe not tomorrow, or next week, or next month. But someday, I hope. A LOCKDOWN LULLABY

This film is about the magic and madness of lockdown, as seen through the eyes of my 6 year old boy, Dylan. Kids have a new-normal that, from what I can tell, is equal parts confusing and amazing. Dylan put it best “Things are pretty weird right now… but also kind of awesome”. Filmed solo, with no crew during the Covid 19 Lockdown in early May 2020. VICTOR & ISOLINA

VICTOR & ISOLINA

Victor and Isolina is an animated short film, featuring 3D printed miniatures of director William D. Caballlero’s bickering and boisterous, Puerto Rican parents. It’s a humorous ‘he said, she said’ account of how the elderly couple separated after years of a shaky relationship and cohabitation. Victor and Isolina debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, qualified for an Academy Award, and screened at the Museum of Modern Art. The short film is a spinoff of ‘Gran’Pa Knows Best’, an interstitial series that debuted for two seasons on HBO, where the viewer gets to ask Caballero’s grandfather for his quirky advice on a variety of topics (www.granpaknowbest.com). The series is currently available for licensing, and all interested parties should send Caballero a private message for more information. --- Directed, produced, shot, and edited by William D. A Tribute To The Conversation (1974)

A Tribute To The Conversation (1974)

Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece The Conversation revolves around a surveillance expert (Gene Hackman, as Harry Caul) and the moral dilemma he faces when his recordings reveal a potential murder. This is my tribute to a film that I consider one of Coppola's finest and combines powerful concepts such as murder, religion, privacy, surveillance and morality in a perfectly crafted piece. I took many licenses when depicting the period technology and elements used in the film, as my goal was to establish a contemporary point of view on a true classic, perhaps also working as a title sequence for an imaginary remake. In My Particular Case

In My Particular Case

How to choose an idea among so many others? This seems to be an endless question. This short film by Chico Jofilsan is a parody of that particular moment that seems further from us every single day: the idea of the perfect idea. In a world in which focus no longer stands out dispersion occupies the foreground. And this is the main theme of this film that shows different resources of animation in adapting to the rhythm of our minds. After all, what other art, if not animation, is capable of shaping so many imaginary worlds? Vans - "Radio Bosforo"

Vans - "Radio Bosforo"

"What’s the best part of skateboarding life? I think that most of us will answer: landing a new trick. I agree with this one, but what’s the second reason why we love skateboarding? It’s traveling! Going on tour, discovering new spots – especially if you don’t know much about the city that you are going to. In this case, Istanbul was a question mark for all of us. To my eyes, the city with over 15 million inhabitants on two continents is an Oriental version of NYC. Maybe the expression “melting pot” was invented there. Eleven skaters squeezed in a van for nine people, five days in the traffic jam in between beautiful spots. We crossed the bridge from the European to the Asian side a bunch of times. The sound system in the van didn’t work properly, we were only able to listen to the radio. We listened to American music, European artists, and of course local ones. It depended on which radio station or side of the city we were in, but our favorite selection came out of our portable speakers. That’s the reason why we thought about starting our own radio station: Radio Bosforo." There is a celebration of the human ability to create sophisticated environments in which we inhabit, but also a concern at the price that we are paying for this. Feeling alien is easy here. - - - MAX COOPER: This project was something special for me. Two of my favourite artists, brothers, and long term collaborators, Kevin and Páraic McGloughlin got together to create a short film with huge visual and conceptual intensity. It is the story of our planet and us on it. Swarming. The huge scale of our impact on the planet presented as beautiful and terrifying growing structures as we see population growth time lapse set against frenetic activity. Usually I write music alongside rough visual ideas from my project stories, and rely on the video artist to synchronise them for music videos. But this beast of a short film was presented more or less finished, and I had the daunting task of how to make the music live up to the feeling and spectacle of the film. As well as sync to the barrage of visual cues. It turned into a bit of an obsession, where I was trying to find the right sounds to link with every new scene, and given the number of scenes, it turned into one of my most detailed pieces of music. If you can listen in HD format with headphones there are many details to find in there, often using spatial/binaural format to make them audible amongst the chaos. Kevin and Páraic also had a big role in guiding the musical style as it’s their film rather than my music video this time. We tried several different ideas, and they encouraged me to go the route of my sansula pieces which you may notice the link to. It’s a small thumb plucked instrument that I play and record and has formed a major part of my sound over the years. The main element that I started with was that big pitch bending synth chord sequence. It seemed to capture something of the growing intensity and power of the film, and I could also sync the pitch gliding to the longer scale visual arrangement. The whole process of building the arrangement tightly to the film yielded an unusual musical structure for me, which was a nice habit breaking process that gave me some lessons to take into future projects. It took a long time to create an audio mapping, but they have made such a beautiful visual spectacle it was a total pleasure to work on and obsess over. Big thanks to Kevin and Páraic McGloughlin for getting me involved in this short film, and I hope some of you can hear and feel the love and sweat and tears we all put into the project. - - - FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM Directors: @kevinmcgloughlin_gram @paraicmcgloughlin Music / Sound Design: @maxcoopermax Fluid Art: @thomas_blanchard @roman.hill @oilhack Drone Photography: @drumhog Thanks: @leamorel @paulmignot_dir @brendanfeelgoodlost @the_wild_seeds

Assorted Rides | Devon Howard

Assorted Rides | Devon Howard

"Assorted Rides" is comprised of a few sessions in California where I met up with a surfer I’ve really enjoyed watching over the years. Devon Howard’s approach to surfing inspired the feel of this short—a modern classic. In preparation for this project, I pored over old surf photograpahy books with works by guys like LeRoy Grannis and Ron Stoner. They are photographers that captured moments and told stories through the use of dramatic backlighting and color accents compressed through a manual focus telephoto lens that—when complimented by the grain of film—produced a timeless image. My hope is the short film does two things: 1.) Makes you want to go surfing right now! 2.) To record a moment in time which represents what I think is Devon's best surfing to date, at age 46 no less. And if curious about what’s going on under his feet, here's what Devon had to say about the boards and the type of surfing we filmed: "After a few decades of goofing off in the surf, I’ve whittled down what I ride most into two distinct camps—both of which are an obvious extension of the waves, culture and characters where I’ve lived all these years. For the cruisey, under shoulder high days (which there are many), I find classic style single-fin longboards (9’9 to 10’) with a '66 Australian bent are hard to beat. When conditions finally push shoulder high on up to double overhead, my plan shapes dip down a few feet to a range of mostly egg-inspired outlines (6’10 - 7’2”), and the rails, bottom contours and fin set-ups take on a much more revved up form. I dig how these two design groupings allow an easy transition from one to the next (thank you low rocker and generous volume), but offer discernible shifts in speed, accessibility to different parts of the wave, and maximize the available space on the face. This film short by Florida's Drew Miller captures the back and forth pacing between long and mid sized equipment, the decisions for which are primarily driven by equal parts attitude and surf conditions. There is absolutely nothing new here in terms of a "horses for courses" approach (thank you Nat Young, Skip Frye, etc), but although well into my mid 40s, I’m still passionate about learning what works, what doesn’t, then plugging that back into the never ending design loop. The stoke for staying on the surf prowl explains why the boards and the ride itself just keeps getting better.” Thank you for watching, Drew Miller @drewbmiller >>>>>> Boards Ridden by @devon_howard - https://ift.tt/3iwf3z4 - 6’10 & 7’0 CI Mid by @cisurfboards - https://ift.tt/31Ho9TH - 9’10 & 10’0 Keeper model by @thomassurfboards - https://ift.tt/2BnalD4 - 9’11 Hi-Pro Log by @thomassurfboards - https://ift.tt/2NTaMax >>>>>> Cinematography by Drew Miller Water by Todd Glaser & Michael Townsend Color by Dustin Miller Song “Hey Moon" by John Maus

Moses Boyd | Stranger Than Fiction (Director's Cut)

Moses Boyd | Stranger Than Fiction (Director's Cut)

Warning: video contains flashing images. The brief spoke of ‘hyper-musicality’. Outside of the obvious, this got us thinking about how might a sound ‘look’? What are our instruments, as filmmakers? First though, we had to set the mood and feel of the piece. Moses wanted something ‘sinister and mystic’ and in line with the album’s themes we anonymised the performers in a shroud of light. The use of a reflective spray and a singular spotlight achieved this look; haloing the band in this intense glow. All captured in-camera. Playing off this visual hook we then set about composing our own rhythm. The looping trajectories, the projected shapes and the strobing light source were all used to achieve that desired ‘musicality’. Plus, by tethering all the action to the track and dolly, we established a perpetual motion; mapping out the music as much as the space. Under the guidance of DP Spike Morris we pushed the in-camera capabilities of film to visually sculpt the music, etching out the track’s propulsive production wherever possible. The materiality of film meant we could really hack the medium to bend and manipulate the images around the music. Having the necessary ingredients in the edit was important to build an arc that does justice to the track, whilst also being true to the in-camera imagery captured on the day. We’d like to thank all our crew and a special mention to our producer Louisa Plumstead who did so much with so little. MALARIA

MALARIA

Malaria is a short film that depicts the downfall of an ordinary hard-working US citizen, who loses his job, is bitten by a mosquito, and descends into a fever and sickness. While being ignored by those surrounding him and finding himself in the darkest of places, this citizen's journey ultimately leads to him with no other option than to live in the streets - houseless. It is a metaphor showing how quickly and unexpectedly, one small event can be catastrophic. As filmmakers, we learned a lot from making this film, so we decided to create a campaign - #houselessnothomeless. With this campaign, we aim to dig into the collective consciousness and bring awareness to the homeless crisis in Los Angeles, currently one of the most pressing issues in the City. Born from the Backcountry // Vanderham and Sandler Scout, Build and Ride a New Alpine Trail

British Columbia’s Kootenay mountains contain some of the world’s most unforgiving—and beautiful—terrain. The peaks, ridges and valleys of the region are remote, extensive and rugged, creating the opportunity for a backcountry experience like no other. Less than four miles as the crow flies from Retallack Lodge lies Antoine Basin, a heavily mined, yet seemingly untapped valley, especially when it comes to trailbuilding. Born from the Backcountry, a new film from Freehub Magazine, follows Thomas Vanderham, Veronique Sandler and the Retallack build crew as they spend a week camping and creating in this place of endless potential.
