Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See

Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See

Episode 284: Artist Richard Mosse documents humanitarian crises and environmental catastrophes by making the unseen visible. This film follows Mosse and his collaborators Ben Frost and Trevor Tweeten as they travel across the world to film under-reported world events in zones of conflict, repurposing surveillance technologies and scientific tools to capture stories and scenes that evoke deeper understanding and motivate audiences to act. In locations like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where over 50 armed groups are engaged in combat, or along paths of migration from the Middle East and North Africa into the European Union, the artist works to bring attention to conflict and suffering around the world. “My power, if I have any,” says Mosse, “is to be able to show you the things that I’ve seen in a more powerful way than perhaps the pictures you’ve seen in the newspaper of the same thing.” Mosse’s work calls specific attention to the tools we use to capture and distribute information about global events. He actively questions why certain conflicts remain relatively unseen, as in the DRC with The Enclave (2012-2013), or interrogates systems of targeted surveillance and dehumanization, as in Incoming (2014-2017). These projects point not only to the problems of the situations and locales in which Mosse and his collaborators work, but also the difficulties that we encounter in perceiving and understanding these events and processes as viewers. The conflicts and crises that Mosse documents are seemingly too opaque and complex to be appropriately described, and so often go hidden or misrepresented. This issue is especially present in his recent projects, which center on the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon is at the heart of his new works Broken Spectre (2018-2022) and Tristes Tropiques (2018-2022), which bring the realities of climate change into focus by revealing both its mundane operations and its catastrophic effects. The artist uses multispectral imaging, cameras that capture ultraviolet light, and tropes of Western media to show audiences the various scales and impacts of deforestation in the Amazon as well as their own implication in it. “We can’t see the climate changing, and that’s really the inherent problem.” says Mosse, “It’s on a scale beyond what we can perceive.” CREDITS | "Extended Play" Series Producer: Ian Forster. TURBULENCE HDR

TURBULENCE HDR

TURBULENCE is an 8K HDR Experience video which was entirely shot in a fishtank with metallic paint and inks. All effects were created in camera. I used a custom micro dropping mechanism es well as 4 axis motion control to capture these images on the macro scale. I was experimenting with very thin needles to release tiny drops into the water. On this level of 5x life-size magnification, one can see the single pigment grains travelling through the water and reflecting the light. I observed many forms of turbulences and the illusion of anti-gravity in the fishtank when the feather light pigments changed direction and started to flow from bottom to top. It was a joy to see this and I hope you like it as much as I do. Eye Candy, optimized for HDR Displays. Hillocks

Hillocks

Synopsis: Sometimes I think I have explored this entire garden, wandered through all its paths, roamed up all its hills, and admired all its views. Lost in reverie, I suddenly detect another pathway once again… Description: This experimental animation features the enigmatic bodies of dyed crystals grown from a chemical process in aqueous solutions. The obscure process of growing dyed crystals, a once relevant practice in materials science, has become obsolete and through my recent work, I became interested in reviving this process. I aimed to bring to life a large collection of crystals into a moving painting, while calling into question their relevance as art objects. I discovered the lost art and science of growing dyed crystals during my residency at the Kahr Research Group from Bart Kahr who worked with these types of crystals throughout 30 years. Virtually every frame of the film showcases a different crystal in the meticulously constructed work. The imagery is an embroidery of thousands of crystals documented in a unique way I discovered utilizing scanners during my residency at the Kahr Research Group. The film was created during my residency at the Santa Barbara Center for Art Science and Technology. In 2020, this film won the GLAS Animation Festival grant, which is the only grant in the US for independent animators in the US. Long Line of Ladies

Long Line of Ladies

From Academy Award-winner Rayka Zehtabchi and Shaandiin Tome, "Long Line of Ladies" intimately observes the months-long process of one girl, her family, and their tight-knit Karuk community as they come together to prepare for her Ihuk, the coming-of-age ceremony for girls which went dormant for over a century due to the violence and destruction brought on by the California Gold Rush. In the weeks leading up to her Ihuk, Ahty learns traditional songs and dances and mentally and physically prepares to spend four days blindfolded and fasting on sacred, tribal land. Meanwhile, the women and men around her support and uplift her as they pass down knowledge, prepare regalia, and above all, promote the continued revitalization of their sacred ceremony. Chemical Somnia is a cross-continental collaboration between filmmaker Scott Portingale and composer Gorkem Sen. The film transports the viewer into chemical dimensions, exploring phase transition, fluid dynamics, and chemical reactions. Timelapse and high speed photography were used on a macro scale to capture these elemental relationships in less than a square inch area on a petri dish. *Headphones are strongly recommended to fully appreciate the resonance of the one instrument soundtrack performed by Gorkem Sen, on an instrument he invented, the yaybahar. a film by SCOTT PORTINGALE music performed by GORKEM SEN on YAYBAHAR this project was made possible by funding from THE ALBERTA FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS

KLIMAX

KLIMAX

Klimax explores the topic of female masturbation in order to redefine the already negatively connoted image of the female sex and thus strives to create new aesthetic associations of femininity. Our main protagonist, Barbie, undergoes a process of transformation. Like Alice in Wonderland, she is immersed in a magical world, a place of allure and delight. It is a fantastic place that leads her to change little by little to free herself from her stiffness and oppression. Klimax is meant to show how unique and beautiful every woman's body is.

Finding Hetch Hetchy: The Hidden Yosemite

Finding Hetch Hetchy: The Hidden Yosemite

FINDING HETCH HETCHY: The Hidden Yosemite Yosemite Valley is well-known as the epicenter of American climbing. Its sister valley to the north has long been left in the shadows of Yosemite’s reputation. The Hetch Hetchy Valley, similarly home to towering granite walls and the majestic beauty for which the Sierra is known, stays well out of the limelight despite being part of Yosemite National Park as a result of San Francisco's controversial dam and reservoir that covers the valley floor. Timmy O’Neill had spent three decades scaling the monoliths in Yosemite Valley but, like so many climbers in the park, had never visited nearby Hetch Hetchy. As it follows Timmy and Lucho, Finding Hetch Hetchy shows breathtaking views of the canyon and the excellent opportunities for climbers while explaining the opportunity to relocate Hetch Hetchy’s namesake reservoir and restore the valley below to its natural beauty. animistica

animistica

animistica is an experimental animation film about nature and death at the edge of liveliness and deadness. Organic textures, captured frame by frame in the nature of Mexico, start to transform and become alive. The view is passing over root plants, fur, feathers, bones and diverse animal cadavers. Process of decay and rottenness characterize the passing-by biotope.

DERE∀LISATION

DERE∀LISATION

The psychological condition Derealisation is best described as a subjective episode relating specifically to a person's perception of the world around them. It often causes those suffering from the condition to regard their surroundings as unreal, distant and distorted or in some way falsified. It is theorised that Derealisation may affect everyone at least once in their lifetime, with a low percentage of the population possibly experiencing symptoms on a more serious and sustained level.  The idea for this piece came in the aftermath of the COVID19 pandemic which isolated and fundamentally changed so many people's lives forever. The constant cycle of negative news and the strict social distancing measures combined to create a dissociative, mass-malaise. This in turn left many feeling disconnected from their everyday lives and the people around them - including members of our own team here at Panoply. This film sets out to be a visual exploration of this phenomena. Credits Concept, Design & Direction Panoply Audio Human Robot Soul
