THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS 'THE DARKNESS THAT YOU FEAR' - OFFICIAL VIDEO

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS 'THE DARKNESS THAT YOU FEAR' - OFFICIAL VIDEO

“The Darkness That You Fear is a hopeful piece of music. When we found the combination of the different voices worked set to the flow of the music it made us feel optimistic, like it was something we wanted to share.” - Tom Rowlands The video is directed by @Ruffmercy “When I first heard the song I immediately connected with the theme and the overall positive vibe. New government rules for relaxing lockdown had been announced and combined with the sun shining, it left me feeling positive about the forthcoming summer. It also triggered a strong sense of nostalgia that led to me going back to look for visual inspiration from the period in time when I first discovered The Chemical Brothers in the mid ’90’s. The video combines archive rave footage from the mid to late 90’s with hand painted Super 8 film textures and hand drawn animation. I love using colour to create chaos and evoke emotions and this was the perfect project to do that.” Director: RUFFMERCY @ruffmercy Production Company: @myaccompliceldn Executive Producer Jamie Clark Producer: Richard Grewe @richardgrewe Editor: Charlie Reddie @ Stitch @stitchediting Picture Researcher: Susi Paz Commissioner: Ailsa Robertson Directors Rep: Alexa Haywood @freeagentuk Additional Animation: Patch D. Since then, she has raised an entire family of pro-surfers, but did so the old way, showing them how to sail and live off the land. Despite speaking a different language and being generations apart, Gisele and her grandson Kalum share an unconditional love for the ocean and this primitive lifestyle that's been lost with changing times. Ziemia / Soil

Ziemia / Soil

In Polish language, the word describing soil is synonymous to “Earth”, which I think is a meaningful coincidence. It’s interesting to think what it would be like to live in an environment such as soil. Communication there happens in darkness, and consists of subtle vibrations and chemical signals - so much different than our loud, bright world above. The ground it is quieter, but it has its own specific sounds, that come from the organisms living there, roots growing, water travelling through. Fertile soil is something that takes a very long time to develop and very little time to destroy. For me it's a fragile, beautiful and mysterious environment - and that's how I aimed to depict it in this animation. It is full CGI work, made using SideFX Houdini and Redshift. This animation was created as a part of my exhibition, which was held from April 24th until May 8th, 2021 in Eskaem, an art gallery in Gdańsk. http://www.eskaem.pl/ I was able to use authentic recordings from the soil thanks to the Sounding Soil project by Marcus Maeder, Zurich University of the Arts, Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology ICST, 2017-2020 https://ift.tt/2QfyNO6 Audio production and editing Marcin Szulc / Coastline Northern Cuts https://ift.tt/3tFAHoI Designed and produced by Zuzanna Kołodziej / Vizuza Full post & photos from the exhibition: https://ift.tt/3oNr1Yx

Imagination

Imagination

The concept for the film that, supported by Lumix, was about the imagination and where my love and enjoyment around making films began. We travelled to Scotland on a road trip of exploration and adventure but was cut short with a new Covid strain suddenly developing resulting in a third national UK lockdown. Over the following months I decided to include my daughter in the film by giving her a camera and seeing how she interpreted the world around her. It was nice to combine all my passions in this film - family, windsurfing, exploration and making films. Shot on the Lumix S1H Sound Mix: James Locke-Hart Thumbnail: James White

Levitation 2

Levitation 2

Sila Sveta presents the second part of the high-tech art performance “Levitation 2”. The second part of the “Levitation” is a continuation of the previous project, which 5 years ago gained more than 20 million views around the world. This performance stands at the intersection of theater, choreography, high technology and illusion. The second part begins literally from the same frame that ended the first performance. This technique was chosen for a reason – the story of the main hero continues and evolves, which is revealed both by the choreography under the direction of Anna Abalikhina & by the XR technology, which takes you beyond the setup and allows the viewer to get into the parallel Universe with completely different laws of physics. “If in the first Levitation we were enclosed by the frames of projection screens, which were arranged in the form of a book, in the second Levitation it was important for us to go beyond the screen boundaries and be able to work with infinite spaces and landscapes. Because this whole story is about overcoming, about going beyond not only the graphics, but also the character of the hero. The important part is adding the color. The first “Levitation” was black-and-white, more intimate, while the second is introduced with a specially selected meaningful colors” says Artur Kondrashenkov, the creative director of the project. Choreographer Anna Abalikhina: “Gravity cannot be overcome, but with it you can try to find harmony and balance. Dance allows you to experience these moments here and now, so while working on the dance we were looking for a state of peace and contemplation. The music of Alexey Nadzharov helped us a lot in this”.

The Gaze

The Gaze

In my years of doing interviews and roundtables and Q&A’s for the various films we’ve made, there is one question that recurs. No matter the length of the piece or the tone of the room, eventually, inevitably, I am asked about the white gaze. It wasn’t until a very particular interview regards The Underground Railroad that the blindspot inherent in that questioning became clear to me: never, in all my years of working or questioning, had I been set upon about the Black gaze; or the gaze distilled. I don’t remember when we began making the piece you see here. Which is not and should not be considered an episode of The Underground Railroad. It exists apart from that, outside it. Early in production, there was a moment where I looked across the set and what I saw settled me: our background actors, in working with folks like Ms. Wendy and Mr. and Mrs. King – styled and dressed and made up by Caroline, by Lawrence and Donnie – I looked across the set and realized I was looking at my ancestors, a group of people whose images have been largely lost to the historical record. Without thinking, we paused production on the The Underground Railroad and instead harnessed our tools to capture portraits of... them. What flows here is non-narrative. There is no story told. Throughout production, we halted our filming many times for moments like these. Moments where… standing in the spaces our ancestors stood, we had the feeling of seeing them, truly seeing them and thus, we sought to capture and share that seeing with you. The artist Kerry James Marshall has a series of paintings of ancestors for whom there is no visual record but for whom he has supplied a visual representation of their person. For me, most inspirationally, "Scipio Moorehead, Portrait of Himself, 1776." Of the painting, from the Met Breuer exhibit KERRY JAMES MARSHALL: MASTRY – “In this painting Marshall created an imagined self-portrait of a real African American artist, Scipio Moorhead, who was active in the 1770s. Few if any images of Moorhead exist in the historical record. Everything we know of his legacy is based on Phillis Wheatley’s first book of poetry, published in 1773 while she was a slave [sic] in Boston. The book’s title page illustration is an engraving of the writer, reportedly modeled on a painting by Moorhead. The engraving remains the only visual proof, however tenuous, of Moorhead’s existence." In the way that Mr. Marshall sought to honor Mr. Moorhead through this imagined physical representation of the artist, we have sought to give embodiment to the souls of our ancestors frozen in the tactful but inadequate descriptor “enslaved,” a phrase that speaks only to what was done to them, not to who they were nor what they did. My ancestors – midwives and blacksmiths, agrarians and healers; builders and spiritualists, yearn’ers and doers – seen here as embodied by this wonderful cast of principal and background actors, did so very much. Housekeeping: From end to end what you are hearing here is Nick’s original score. And yet even at fifty minutes, this is barely twenty percent of the score for the show. The same with the images; maybe five of these shots are in the actual show? There are no spoilers here. Other images in this format appear there but not here. All told, we archived four hours of these portraits. They flow in story order, from Georgia to Indiana. NOTE: one of these things, you’ll notice, is not like the others. In the context of the show, its presence will make sense. A FEW SHOUTOUTS – None of these shots are planned. Occasionally, when the spirit moved us, we stopped making the planned thing and focused on making THIS thing. So shoutout to my brother James for sure; we had a show to film and yet he never questioned, he brought his best to this. Always. Caroline Eseline. Our costume designer. The majority of the souls you see here are inhabited by background actors. Which meant at any moment, the camera could go from a close-up of number one on the call sheet to… a portrait of number 500. It did not matter. Every soul needed full embodiment. And every damn time I saw someone and was moved to portraiture, there was no doubt of their readiness. The same goes for Lawrence Davis and his wonderful group of hair stylists. And Doniella Davy and her makeup team. Mark Friedberg. Liz Tan, Spoon, Jesse and the directing team. Jarrett Morgan, aka Da’ Possum. Alex Bickel. Daniel Morfesis, who cut this and all the teasers that came before. OUR BACKGROUND ACTORS. My most humble thanks. This is an act of seeing. Of seeing them. And maybe, in a soft-headed way, of opening a portal where THEY may see US, the benefactors of their efforts, of the lives they LIVED. Much love to you. And so much love to THEM. -B

All Is Well

All Is Well

When a woman quarantined in April 2020 gets a middle of the night phone call, she wants to make the perfect arrangements and control what she can control. But if last year taught us anything - it’s that nothing goes to plan. All Is Well is about control, loss and letting go. And finding the silver lining in 1970’s porn. HOA

HOA

HOA is a short skateboarding film for Thank You Skateboards that was shot exclusively in the residential neighborhoods of Los Angeles County. The film is a nod to every skateboarder's early skateboarding experience of skating the often less than ideal terrain of their local neighborhood but making due nonetheless. HOA was created as part of Transworld Skateboarding's SKATE & CREATE 2020 contest. https://ift.tt/3aqjxUv Featuring: Daewon Song & Torey Pudwill Cameos: Chad Muska & Rodney Mullen Directed, Shot, Edited: Colin Kennedy Music used with permission: Nation of Language "The Wall & I"

WEAKNESS OF THE FLESH

WEAKNESS OF THE FLESH

Concrete, when dry, cemented and stuck. The body, delicate. When the mind is pushed, the potential of the defense system is revealed. Blank canvases and raw environments. The complexities of human nature exposed. Depth of understanding to the natural course. Society's normality can’t enslave us. The mind pushes to the body. The mind pushes towards the weak flesh. A rebound effect that continues. This is a universal temptation that repeats through time. How to Disappear by Total Refusal

How to Disappear by Total Refusal

“How to Disappear” is an anti-war movie in the true sense of the word, searching for possibilities for peace in the most unlikely place of an online war game. It’s a tribute to disobedience and desertion - in both digital and physical-real warfare. About Total Refusal Total Refusal is an open artists’ collective which criticizes and artistically appropriates contemporary video games. However, as most mainstream game narratives employ the same infinite loops of reactionary tropes, the genre largely fails to challenge the values of their players and instead affirms hegemonial moral concepts. Acknowledging that this media is currently not realizing its cultural potential, we aim to appropriate digital game spaces and put them to new use. Moving within games but casting aside the intended gameplay, we rededicate these resources to new activities and narratives, looking to create “public” spaces with a critical potential.

“Business As Usual” is about creating your own sense of movement, taking ownership of what you can influence, and being the author of your own story. A sense of peace and happiness when things seem to be burning around you. And the fact that we have to continuously choose ourselves. Our setting, Leimert Park, is known for being the center of historical African-American art and music in LA. @NeighborsSkateShop, through the love, energy and impact of skateboarding, helps protect and preserve that culture. And it is with this sentiment that we were able to showcase businesses that serve the community and tell the story of our hero, @akwxi. @wearedivision7 --------- Google "Business As Usual" credits Director: Joshua Kissi @joshuakissi Production Co: division7 @wearedivision7 Starring: Akwasi Baour Owusi @akwxi Neighbors Skate Shop @neighborsskateshop Edward (Tre) N Lampkin III @cockytee Cleon Arrey @cleonarrey Client: Google @google Agency: M Booth Group Manager: Amy Shoenthal EPs: Kamila Prokop @kamilaprokop + David Richards Producer: Manny Caston: @mannycaston Production Supervisor: Gianfranco Svagelj @svagelj Production Coordinator: Brooke Eliot @broookeee21 1st AD: Boma Pennebaker DP: Ben Goodman @bengoodman_dp 1st AC: Travis Waddell @traviswaddell 2nd AC: Scott Sison @scottsison Prop Master: Dru Doe Leggiero Prop Assist: Quintin Scherquist Suit Tailor: Adrien Sauvage: @adriensauvage Music: Sunni Colon @sunnicolon Voice Over: David B. SEARCHLIGHT SHORTS | The Heart Still Hums | dir. by Savanah Leaf and Taylor Russell

A documentary short following five women as they fight for their children through the cycle of homelessness, drug addictions and neglect from their own parents. Unique, yet undoubtedly familiar to many; a story about fear, sacrifice and the unconditional love between a mother and her children. #SearchightShorts

The Headless Way - Who Are You

The Headless Way is a collection of philosophies and meditations by the late great Douglas Harding on the subject of the true nature of the self. I collaborated with his protégé Richard Lang to create this short video which gives a small taste of Harding's understanding of the nature of the self through the lens of distance and observation. When I heard The Last Goodbye, the haunting melody and gorgeous vocals, not to mention the cinematic feel leading to a pulse-pounding finale, I knew instantly I wanted to use this for a black and white film. Interestingly enough, while I love making these monochrome films, I've had this newfound love of color in storms, the variety, the stunning tones of greens, blues, oranges, reds and everything in-between. So as I was making this film entirely in black and white, I kept getting this unsatisfied feeling. I decided to try something new about halfway through, when the song's pace slowly increases, and I hope it's something you enjoy! I love this song, I love these clips and I love chasing storms. The scenes in this film have appeared before, and I cannot wait to get out and get some new stuff to share down the road. It may be two years of collecting footage again before I create something new, so I had to put something out now to tide me over until then and also to fire me up for storm season! Hope you enjoy!

On est Ensemble

On est Ensemble

On est Ensemble. A portrait of Cherif Fall. “When I was small there were a lot of people that said I couldn’t surf. In my generation there were many who were much better than I. I was criticised a lot, along with a few other things that I didn’t really appreciate but it helped me a lot. Now I can say I’ve achieved nearly everything I wanted to achieve. There were moments which were really hard, to surf, to have a board. It was challenging. If you see that you can help a person, you have to help them - sincerely. Sometimes when I reflect on my life, I’m proud of myself as my parents are really happy. When I see that and my life now, from where I started at the beach in N’gor surfing with only broken boards it makes me happy. Today, people say bad things and good things .The bad things, I listen to them and I leave. I don’t care about that. I’m in my headspace of working and that’s it. Surfing isn’t a thing for white and blacks. It’s everywhere. For everyone. If you want to do it, then do it. Today that is what we believe in. I would love people to help the Senegalese surfers, as we have a lot of surfers who surf really well now. A lot of people say there are no black surfers but here there is us, me, the people you see here. We are all ready to show our Senegalese surfing” - Cherif Fall On est Ensemble. A Wasted Talent project, supported by Billabong. Directed by Guillem Cruells. Executive producer Alexei Obolensky. Still photography by Nil Puissant. Sound design and mix by Thom Pringle. Graphic direction and design by George Hatton. Shot in Dakar, Senegal.
