Field of Vision - The Facility

Field of Vision - The Facility

Detained inside an infamous American detention center as the pandemic spreads, a group of immigrants organize in protest to demand protection and their release. Separated from their families, and fearing for their lives, they take bold action. But officials who run the detention center are intent on keeping these men and women silent, and keeping them locked up. Filmed using the cameras attached to tablets installed inside the detention center cell-blocks, the film is a unique, real-time chronicle of a life in an immigration detention facility, and of a struggle for freedom and accountability. Paving Tundra

Paving Tundra

The Brooks Range is one of Earth’s largest roadless areas. In 2013, the State of Alaska proposed building a 225-mile industrial access road to facilitate the construction of an open-copper pit mine near the village of Ambler. This would be the largest road construction project in Alaska since the development of the Dalton Highway in 1974. The Ambler Road would parallel five subsistence communities, cross 161 rivers and streams (two of them designated Wild and Scenic Rivers) and pass through Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The Ambler Mining District and proposed road serves as habitat for salmon, whitefish and sheefish as well as a crucial migration corridor for Alaska's largest caribou herd, the Western Arctic. Eleven Village councils have passed resolutions against the road’s development. In 2016 we traveled 350 miles along road corridor into the Brooks Range to question the meaning of progress and ask what may be lost if the tundra is paved to Ambler. Forever

Forever

A life insurance company uses an AI algorithm to determine the risk of a new applicant. The subsequent denial sparks a period of introspection for the individual in question. "Forever" is deep and dense, it conveys various emotions, questions the audience, it is the layered tale of the disembodiment of our world through algorithms and artificial intelligence - addressing it from a political, visual and philosophical perspective. The stunning, abstract, pointillist animation highlights that loss of meaning, of bearings as it is now a machine that observes and makes decision about our own lives, based on data. This panoptic fantasy has become reality, the invasion of our private lives is extremely potent and made tangible through the point of view of AI. "Forever" was created using the experiential technique of using LiDAR to capture real life moments. The LiDAR unit used to acquire the footage was originally created for self-driving cars. This junction of technology and film making intersects with the subject of the film. AI uses LiDAR to "see" humanity in accurate detail, but has resolution limitations. In both story and style, "Forever" explores the boundary of advanced technology and the human experience. Contact details: mitchmcglocklin@protonmail.com www.mitch.cool

Happiness is a Journey: the hidden life of an American warehouse worker - documentary

Happiness is a Journey: the hidden life of an American warehouse worker - documentary

Warehouse workers in Austin, Texas, work through the night to process newspapers for delivery before Christmas. In this impressionistic documentary, visual artists and film-makers Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan follow Eddie 'Bear' Lopez at the Austin American-Statesman newspaper printing warehouse where Lopez has worked for more than 20 years. Throughout his life Lopez has been collecting items he comes across – creating shrines at his home, in his vehicles and his work station. The film-makers join Lopez as he ventures out into the empty streets to deliver newspapers. 'Gentrification destroyed the San Francisco I knew, Austin is next' - film-maker Patrick Bresnan expands on why he and Ivete Lucas made this film about the routines of the city’s working class warehouse workers here: https://ift.tt/3EdeEel Key credits Featuring: Eddie 'Bear' Lopez Directed by: Ivete Lucas and Patrick Bresnan Produced by: Patrick Bresnan Co-producer: Dora Nedeczky Co-producer: Ike No Koi Associate Producer: Shakira Refos Director of Photography: Patrick Bresnan Editor: Ivete Lucas Executive Producers, Guardian Documentaries: Ekaterina Ochagavia and Jess Gormley Head of Documentaries: Lindsay Poulton A Guardian Documentary Length: 13 mins Source: The Guardian

And thank you too, to all those who have given us such incredible feedback on the film - you've made it feel worthwhile! www.falsetoothfilms.com Doughnut explores the power of words, and the fact that how the world sees us is informed so much by what we say. It's about how we can present two conflicting 'truths' to two sets of people, and both parties will buy our words wholesale. It also looks at the nature of forgiveness, and whether or not you can truly do your time for a past crime. As with all our films, we want it to be entertaining on first watch, but with enough questions and layers that you want to discuss with fellow viewers afterwards what you would have done in the same situation, and watch it again. Some kind words so far: 'I genuinely thought this was terrific... it showed a real mastery of tone,' - Jason Wood, Artistic Director, HOME, Manchester. 'I thought this was great. Beginning reminded me of Inside No. 9' - Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, High-Rise). 'Very dark and very funny. The shock of [plot point spoiler] is so powerful and changes the dynamic so dramatically' - Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, The Crown). 'It's really good. Love the cinematography. The pace. The humour is fabulously subtle' - Maxine Peake (Funny Cow, Fanny Lye Deliver'd) 'Brilliant. I laughed my arse off all the way through that,' - Barry Ward (Dating Amber, Jimmy's Hall)

Awoko

Awoko

This film is about a group of men who print a newspaper five nights a week. At the Awoko printing press in Freetown, Sierra Leone, they suffer power cuts, ageing machines and dangerous chemicals – but it’s also a place to sleep, chat, joke and, of course, earn money. Some of the older men like James and Joe have worked in the industry their whole lives, while the younger printers like Ibrahim and Sheka see no future in it – they would rather be lawyers, or accountants, if they could afford the university fees. Newspaper printing has a rich history in Freetown, Sierra Leone, established as a colony for former slaves in the late eighteenth century. The first movable type printing press in sub-Saharan Africa arrived there in the 1790s, and in the nineteenth century the city became a centre of writing and publishing in West Africa. Weekly newspapers printed in Freetown travelled thousands of miles, connecting a vast transnational readership and fostering the anti-colonial consciousness that would lead to a rejection of European rule in the twentieth century. Today, in a country where fewer than 15% of the population have access to the internet, print newspapers remain a vital, if precarious and declining, institution. Newspaper printers in Sierra Leone sometimes take a political risk with their work – they've been arrested by governments in the past – but they also, every night, take on personal risks working with toxic chemicals and ageing machines in order to keep information flowing out to their many thousands of readers. So while this film is about one night shift at the Awoko press, it’s also about the fact that, around the world, the vibrant public sphere and political change promised by journalism doesn’t happen by accident, but through untold hidden hours of boring, messy, dangerous work. AUTOSCOPY

AUTOSCOPY

AUTOSCOPY follows a sound artist who escapes to the Swedish wilderness for a period of creativity and introspection. The discovery of an old abandoned floatation tank and experimenting with psilocybin mushrooms evokes a strange alchemy of deep-rooted imagery. Boundaries are dissolved between the organic and the unnatural, the imagined and the experienced. A disorientating voyage deep into the heart of nature and ultimately; deeper into himself. We are currently seeking producing-collaborators to help continue the development of AUTOSCOPY as a feature film. Nego Bala - "Sonho | Dream"

Nego Bala - "Sonho | Dream"

Nego Bala, was born and raised in Boca do Lixo, São Paulo’s roughest neighbourhood. From his reality, there was no much more opportunities. This film is based on real facts from his life, who, at age 11, wrote the lyrics for the song “Sonho” during his first time at a juvenile detention center.  The oppressive penitentiary system take out from kids the right of dreaming. But there's no cage for talent. There are no bars for imagination. "To dream is to look inward. To learn is to remember. There's no sorrow in my tears today. There's no hate in my tears anymore. Joy and inspiration."  May this story inspire other kids to never give up on their dreams. ___ Directed and written by Douglas R. Boys Do Cry

Boys Do Cry

In the last 12 months in Australia 2,384 men have taken their own lives. That's an average of 7 men every day, making suicide the leading cause of death in Australian males aged 15-49. Some of these men might still be alive today if they had felt able to speak to someone about how they were feeling. Generations of men have grown up with the idea that "Boys Don't Cry" - that when the going gets tough, a man should keep his feelings to himself, "man up" and put on a brave front. The Boys Do Cry project aims to put an end to this idea once and for all, so that when the going gets tough, men get talking. In parallel, Shaylee, a graduate of "Nissan Nativ Tel Aviv Acting Studio", acted in television series. In 2016 Shaylee went through a severe car accident followed by a long rehabilitation as a wheelchair user. Shaylee Atary is now finishing the Steve Tisch School of Film & Television, Tel Aviv University (https://ift.tt/3olpDOd) Director's Statement: In 2016 I went through a car accident that was followed by a long rehabilitation for several of years. The film NEURIM was inspired by this. From the point of view of a wheelchair user, I started to explore the liberation of the soul from my physical body. Nowadays, I am not fully recovered but I am learning to live with my physical disability, acknowledging that I am no less a woman because of my outer shell. We are all in different kinds of sizes, colors, genders and other unique features. I think Cinema has the power and the ability, to see beauty in every one of us, just as we are. (Shaylee Atary)

Of Memory and Debris

Of Memory and Debris

Of Memory and Debris is a personal portrait of the director’s grandfather (Opa, 94) and his wife's grandfather (Ababo, 81) who stayed back in Venezuela after most of their family emigrated due to the economic crisis and violence in the country. Opa lives with his wife Oma, who has been suffering from Alzheimer's for the past ten years, as he tries to comfort her in her final days. Everyday Ababo scrapes the sewers of his abandoned gold processing factory to accumulate gold remnants and afford a trip to Canada. His goal is to attend his granddaughter’s wedding. An intimate character diptych, OF MEMORY AND DEBRIS tells the story of an unseen generation — the grandparents left behind by the largest exodus in Latin America's recent history. Last Stop For Lost Property

Last Stop For Lost Property

An intimate look at the New York City subway and the thousands of items and people that get lost in its tunnels. ---- 2020 / Brooklyn, NY / 12.50 min - Jury Prize Best Documentary: San Francisco Short Film Festival 2020 - Best Human Story: Better Cities Film Festival 2020 - Jury's Citation Award: Black Maria Film Festival 2021 - Official Selection at Las Cruces FF, Salem FF, Florida FF, Ashland FF, Brooklyn FF, Rooftop FF ---- Trailer: https://ift.tt/305sxu6 ---- Synopsis: What happens when you lose something on the subway in New York? Chances are you’ll run into the wise, gentle, and unofficial ambassador of the Transit Authority, Sonny Drayton. Through his humor and intimate personal knowledge of the subway, Sonny invites us to consider what it means to lose and be lost underground, often the last stop for those who’ve fallen through the social safety net and have nowhere else to go. “Last Stop for Lost Property” questions how we value the artifacts of our lives: big and small, cherished and dismissed, tangible and existential. ---- NARRATOR: Sonny Drayton DIRECTOR: Vicente Cueto ART DIRECTOR: Rachel Winton CINEMATOGRAPHY: Emma Yi SOUND DESIGNER: Elyse Blennerhassett EDITOR: Benjamin Stillerman PRODUCER: Emily Packer Made as a part of UnionDocs' Collaborative Studio Fellowship.

Tiger (Shark) King

Tiger (Shark) King

More than 20 years ago conservationist and diver, Jim Abernethy, discovered the affectionate side of large predatory sharks after removing a fishing hook from the jaws of a tiger shark. Since then he has removed thousands of hooks from sharks in the warm, clear waters off the Bahamas and has brought divers to safely encounter these apex predators with the goal of demstigmatizing sharks as mindless killers.
