Imogen

Imogen

I'm proud to present my newest film on Imogen Caldwell. Imogen is a 23 year old woman from Red Bluff, Western Australia - one of the remotest regions I've ever traveled to, known for its abundance of perfect waves, Outback dust and treacherous wildlife. Over the course of a year, our adventures took us from her homebreak to the icebergs of Iceland, forests of France and the jungles of Indonesia. direct/film/edit: Morgan Maassen Supported by O'Neill Music by: Charles Murdoch, The Phoenix Foundation, and Sharon Von Etten

IN LIMBO / NYC

IN LIMBO is a visual, abstract exploration of New York City as a relict, void of people. AS ABOVE

AS ABOVE

"As above, so below" As Above is a short film exploring the tight link between the microscopic world and immensity of the universe. Illustrating our universe’s never ending dance of destruction and creation, in which life can emerge... As Above was made of one single shot filmed on the 8mm2 (0.3 square inch) surface of a chemical reaction. The environment in which we live, is at the constant mercy of the ever changing flow of planets, stars and galaxies... As well as the composition of the microscopic world. “As Above” is an invitation to contemplate the beauty of this perpetual movement of which we are part of... And perhaps invite the viewer to reflect on his position in the universe and the preciosity of life. In the same ways, recent events have shown us that a microscopic virus could have a destructive impact on humanity... A destructive impact counter weighted by a positive impact on our planets global ecosystem. PIONEERS tells the story of two desperate pioneer women who escape together across the midwestern desert in 1848. In a twisted and gripping tale of survival, the duo shatters our expectations of the typical damsels in distress and deliver a story of physical and psychological survival. A haunting and mesmerizing tribute to the fierce femininity often forgotten in history, PIONEERS is a raw, visual journey rich with tender perseverance. https://ift.tt/39eKdFe Directors: Charlotte Fassler & Dani Girdwood Script by: Bianca Rusu & Diana Irvine Production: SLMBR PRTY Films Producers: Kirstin VanSkiver, Sarah Donnenberg, Leah Donnenberg Director of Photography: Allison Anderson Editor: Stephania Dulowski Original Music: Julianna Barwick Sound Design & Mix: Mike Vitacco Colorist: Jenny Montgomery First Assistant Director: Christopher Michael First Assistant Camera: Sara Ingram Second Assistant Camera: Nina Portillo Gaffer: Kevin Willing Key Grip: John Sircher Grip: Cory Solon Wardrobe: Gabrielle Levion Hair & Makeup: Diahann McCrary Prop Master: Larry Poole Animal Wrangler: Racine Poole Stunt Coordinator: Pete Porteous Sound Recordist: Leonardo Nesco Property Owner: Marcus Phares Medic: Albert Cosio Production Assistant: Angie Savoldi Production Assistant: Dusty Phares Additional Sound Editor: Julianne Guffian Assistant Sound Mixer: Stefano Campello Conform Artist: Kaitlyn Jackson Color Producer: Stephanie Arce VFX Artist: Tim Farrell VFX Producer: Felix Cabrera Cora: Bianca Rusu Mattie: Diana Irvine Man on Horse: Larry Poole

JUTLAND II | Breath of the Seasons

JUTLAND II | Breath of the Seasons

Watch in 4K or HD with headphones or quality sound in fullscreen - thank you! 'Breath of the Seasons' has been my personal project from early 2017 until early 2020. Living around the Jutland peninsula in Denmark my entire life, what inspired me to make this film was the very difference between winter, spring, summer and autumn in the already diverse Jutlandic landscapes - and the visually beautiful story this has. To show this cycle in nature through timelapse photography has been a mammoth task and a huge completion for me personally. It has driven me through all spectres emotionally; exhaustion, excitement, despair, joy and everything in between. The countless hours spent on locations made me see and feel the difference of all four seasons. It opened my eyes to how similar nature actually is to humans; As nature takes a single breath all four seasons play before our eyes until she’s ready for the next breath and it all starts over again. Energy is everywhere and nothing is at a standstill. Big thanks to timelapse colleague Henrik Matzen for always supporting and feedbacking along the way. Praise and thanks to my supportive family for always understanding my need to create. A HISTORY OF SILENCE: THE CINEMA OF LOIS WEBER

A HISTORY OF SILENCE: THE CINEMA OF LOIS WEBER

In 1914, Lois Weber became the first female director of a feature film. She was one of the first women to own her own studio. She made films that directly engaged with social issues like abortion, capital punishment, birth control, and power imbalances between men and women - all at a time before women could vote. In the 1910s and 1920s, she was one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures, but by the time of her death in 1939 she was almost completely forgotten and bankrupt. How did we forget one of the great pioneering voices in early filmmaking? Weber’s story reveals the radical independent nature of Hollywood in the pre-studio era. For a brief time, women were free to compete with men as producers, directors, entrepreneurs, and writers. Ambition, profitable work, and innovative ideas outweighed prejudices and social norms; allowing women to carve an impressive place for themselves in the origin of early Hollywood. This was a time in Hollywood’s history when 40% of scripts were written by women. June Mathis was the highest paid executive of a major studio. The majority of post-production and editing was handled almost exclusively by women. Lois Weber used that freedom to tell stories to a global audience that were socially relevant, groundbreaking, and are now completely forgotten. The erasure of the influence of women in early Hollywood reads more like a conspiracy than an accident. The discovery of the broad role of women in the origin of our industry forces you to re-examine the contemporary exclusion of women from the cinema. It isn’t simply the case that women are working to create a new place for themselves amongst the ranks of male directors, producers, writers, and studio heads. They are working to re-claim a place that was theirs from the beginning. — There were a ton of great research references that I found that I would highly recommend you check out for more information on Weber and other women of early Hollywood. The silence within

The silence within

The perception of the world is a reflection of one‘s mind. A man visits an institution of silence for facing his inner conflicts. He is brought to different rooms which provide different aspects of silence. None of these help him find inner balance, so he has to go deeper in his mind and confront the initial incident itself.

The Shrewd Awakening

The Shrewd Awakening

THE SHREWD AWAKENING… ‘The Shrewd Awakening’ is vivid, flirtatious, electric and inconceivable. Everyday objects flow together in unexpected and serendipitous ways allowing the film to unfold a subconscious narrative that is open to the viewers interpretation. The focus is on the hyperreal surrealism; the style that is always apparent in our body of work. It’s illusional with bizarre elements and a humoristic tone. In Pursuit of Ghosts - Max Cooper & Tom Hodge

In Pursuit of Ghosts - Max Cooper & Tom Hodge

Stream/download 'Yearning for the Infinite': https://ift.tt/2NYiIIQ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Kevin McGloughlin: In Pursuit of Ghosts is a representation of the daily grind. We assign meaning to our existence , what matters to me might not matter to you. This struggle to obtain more in life is something I think we can all relate to. We want to be better looking, better artists, run faster, achieve more... Basically all of this means nothing really unless we assign meaning to it. As Max put it "everyone is yearning for the infinite"... This struggle for development and growth can be amazingly positive and amazingly negative, depending on each individual. 'Yearning' for the unachievable is something to be harnessed. While we know reaching for the infinite is reaching for something we can never grasp, (in this life anyways) the collective journey as humans, and realizing the tiny fraction of possibilities is an incredible phenomenon...I prefer the word miracle really :) I was super happy as always to work on this brief with Max. And absolutely love the music from Max and Tom Hodge. The video was created using early photography of motion by the legendary Eadward Muybridge. Big Love to the Mesh family! Max Cooper: The final track from the album was written with my long-term collaborator, the great pianist and composer, Tom Hodge. Visually it’s a story of how, as individuals, we are compelled to keep going, indefinitely. The imagery from Kevin McGloughlin uses an early example of moving image, featuring a woman walking, the simplest few frames, yet a scene which speaks a thousand words. It needed something somber but with hope, our endless pursuit and attempts to make sense of the world we live in, and my synth work didn’t seem to do it justice. It needed an old instrument to match, so I drew on work with Tom to find the right musical fit. The same applies throughout the project, the music is primarily defined by visual requirements. The full album project is explained at https://ift.tt/2Y443PF

THE DISTRACTION

THE DISTRACTION

{An Anxiety/Depression Experience} A short form exploration of the very visceral and disorienting world of living with severe anxiety and depression, the world’s biggest health problem. DISTRACTING YOURSELF IS NOT ENOUGH….BE UNABASHED! Get it out of your body and don’t hold back! Tell someone right this moment! And if they don’t listen, tell someone else. Get it out, tell the world without shame. It could save your life. No more hiding. No more pretending, people. This ridiculous stigma must end now. All we have are each other. If you or someone you know is fighting depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts please please don’t ignore it. Find resources online and in your community to battle this beast head-on. You are absolutely stronger than you think. suicide.org Adaa.org My entire life I’ve lived with debilitating Anxiety and Depression. I found many distractions over the years, but no matter how hard I work or how far I travel it's always come back heavier and stronger than ever. I gathered a few friends who live with, or are directly affected by, Anxiety/Depression/Mental Illness to make a small passion project opening up about what it's like to live with this rampant, internal horror that is absorbing deeper and deeper into our society. Whether you are bullied, grieving, chemical imbalances, etc etc, the feeling is universal and can destroy your soul little by little. As a person living with these illnesses, I find most films made about this topic are seen as sob stories, or the black & white student film of cutting your wrists in the tub. Many people think it’s a mood. Many people have no idea what it feels like. But what I do know is that there are million upon millions of people suffering from this very invisible and very real disease. Everyday I see another teen committing suicide, another mom or dad kills themselves, an elderly couple die by their own hand. We are all affected. It shocks me that we are all so ashamed to not be talking about this in normal conversation. So let's talk about it and get our society to be compassionate and proactive! Fake babies, real love

Fake babies, real love

A growing number of collectors are cuddling, changing and caring for 'reborns' – individually crafted baby dolls that can cost up to $20,000. For some, it's about rekindling their baby-rearing years. For others, it's about dealing with their own inability to birth real human babies. Despite the finger-pointing from outsiders, it's a subculture that's thriving globally. Directed by Tom Silverstone
