Joiri Minayas Pattern Making | Art21 "New York Close Up

Joiri Minaya’s Pattern Making | Art21 "New York Close Up”

In the multidisciplinary practice of artist Joiri Minaya, the histories, realities, and fantasies of the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean are explored, exposed, and subverted as Minaya seeks to control her own representation and visibility. "I'm interested in the idea of opacity," says Minaya. "A right to remain opaque, even to yourself, even things that you may not understand about yourself, and being at peace with that and not having to explain yourself to others." In her collages, photographs, performances, and installations, Minaya uses pattern, camouflage, and opacity as a "tool for liberation" from outside judgment. In her photo series and performances of Containers (2015-2020), the artist recreates poses—arms akimbo, lying in odalisque—she found repeated in Google image search results for "Dominican women." Performers wear patterned, restrictive bodysuits made from spandex that encase the wearer from head to toe.  Spandex also covers several monuments of colonizers in the series The Cloaking (2020), where Minaya created her own textiles featuring repeats of plants that played important roles to Native and Afro-diasporic peoples in the Americas. "I'm thinking of a way to re-signify the public space used to commemorate colonial history, and instead trying to commemorate the people who resisted colonialism," Minaya explains. A dense visual layering of the Dominican Republic's landscapes, her New York studio, and the artist's vibrant works, this short documentary film follows Minaya as she challenges the ways that the cultures of the Caribbean have been represented and makes space for the stories that remain untold.  Learn more about the artist at: https://ift.tt/LGbCOgJ CREDITS | "New York Close Up" Series Producer: Nick Ravich. Middle Sized Things

Middle Sized Things

The first: a joke in which someone was misinformed at an early age that size has some direct correlation to something’s moral status and is struggling to comprehend that this may not be the case. The second was realizing it should be a figure with some vague authority or societal prestige. I’ve encountered very narrow minded and delusional people that speak with a particular self-righteousness and thought “what would happen if that character was someone I didn’t hate and cringe at, or at least made them funny to watch.” So it wasn’t always a guest speaker or professorial figure but when I combined the ideas, something about that made sense. It didn’t start as any literal critique on the current state of higher education, but if it landed there I’m cool with that. Eric’s position is almost entirely from a silly argument (more of a joke) I had in college that never left my head, and it naturally informed his entire stance when I needed a somewhat logical pushback against the first two ideas. A huge part of this one [the film] was to stoke a conversation, however dumb the premise, and somehow have that translate from the screen into an actual discourse between viewers so they could interact with the logic of the lecture." -Michael

Seth's Prayer

Seth's Prayer

Starring Eric Rahill, Rachel Kaly, and Matt Barats Written by Harris Mayersohn, Eric Rahill, and Danny Scharar Directed/Edited by Danny Scharar Cinematography by Johnny Frohman Produced by Harris Mayersohn and Elena Ridker Music by Mikal Kronin Sound by Rider Laskin Color by Nick Lareau Mix by Adam Baker PAs Emily Everhard and Peyton Gwen ©2023 Dogma 3000 From NoBudge After being fired as a school administrator, a man turns to modeling to spread the word of God. “Seth’s Prayer,” directed by Danny Scharar, is a ludicrous comedy about unblinking faith and Christian ambition. Canned from his job for trying to indoctrinate children with his religious beliefs, Seth takes it as a sign from heaven and vows to become a famous model. On the internet, he finds a local photographer by searching “Christian photographers near me,” and sets out to take the world by storm. But when the supremely confident Seth (“I gain muscle at will, and own over thirty shirts”) begins to feel the economic pressures and temptations of the devil, doubt filters in. The film is a showcase for Eric Rahill playing Seth, a performance filled with impeccable line reads and all-in commitment.

The animal was staring at me, and that’s when I started to wonder if cows were aware of their surroundings, if they’d experienced the pain of losing a loved one, if they’d felt emotional attachment. HANIA RANI — HELLO

HANIA RANI — HELLO

" Continuing their ongoing creative partnership, Paris-based filmmaker Neels Castillon directs the music video for Hello – the latest track from Polish pianist and composer Hania Rani. Shot in the Alps, the video documents a live session recorded against breathtaking mountain scenery, incorporating a dance sequence performed by Czech dancer and visual artist Mr. Kriss – aka Kristián Mensa. A connection in movement between the music and the natural environment, choreographed with Mr. Kriss in the role of playful disruptor, the video marks Castillon and Rani’s latest collaboration since 2020 releases F Major and Soleil Pâle, forming a union of sound and vision that reflects the director’s instinctively fluid approach. Meditating on Hello and its deeper meaning, Rani explains, “Hello is a track about feeling a bit uneven and restless during the night. It is about this strange inner feeling that makes you stay awake and make plans, question things, overthink and not be able to sleep. But it's an interesting state. The whole nervous system is full on, everything seems a bit exaggerated and you lose control over your mind. Repetitive words "hello" are a little reminder to yourself to stay sane and think clearly. It is reaching out for other people in the very strange, empty space where you landed.” Gondwana records. directed by Neels Castillon dancer — Kristián Mensa drums — Wojtek Warmijak double bass — Ziemowit Klimek production company — Motion Palace producer — Louis Arnoux executive producer — Ariane Cornic production coordinator — Sandrine Laveau cinematographer — Eric Blanckaert 1 AC — François Gallet 2nd AC — Adrien Stefas production designer — Romain Quartier art director — Vincent Perrin runner — Zoé Lazzaroni runner — Elie Varraz sound engineer / live record — Miche Moreno mix — Greg Freeman mastering — Norman Nitzsche tour manager — Bernard Ambroziewicz driver — Tomasz Milewski driver — Michał Żagan artist managers — Monika Ignaczewska & Carlo Garrè (!K7 Music) editor — Sébastien Rouquet colorist — Sylvain Canaux camera rental — RVZ sound recording equipment — MADLOC Many thanks to — Manon Lazzaroni, Sébastien Lazzaroni, Estelle Rudelle, Jacky Ruffier, Mairie de Courchevel, Aymerick Mermoz, Florent Hazucka, Kelly Piano, Saint Louis.

Love Machine

Love Machine

An anniversary gift exchange leads two young lovers into a black hole of personal misunderstanding. Written and Directed by Michael Rees Starring Veronika Slowikowska and Kyle Chase Production Sound by Leigh Murray Music "No One Will Laugh" by Dan Reeder © 2023 Bender Media From NoBudge: “Love Machine,” directed by Michael Rees, is a squirm-inducing dark comedy about the delusions and insensitivities of a dysfunctional couple. What at first appears to be a straightforward relationship study soon devolves into a brutally awkward gift exchange, absurd, deranged, uproariously funny. Sure, he brings her flowers and she pretends to eat them. But we’re still not prepared for her response to receiving a thoughtful and sentimental present about their first year together. The spotlight here is on the actress, Veronika Slowikowska, who has quickly established herself as one of the great goofballs of our time, as both an actor and social media performer. Her highly expressive mode of comedy registers in a signature mish-mash of unfinished sentences, silly voices, fake laughs, and wild gesticulation. Her funniest move however is when she suddenly snaps back into a straight character as if her insane behavior made complete sense. Rees smartly allows her to run free and the film is a spectacle of cringe. We are thrilled to premiere “Love Machine” as a NoBudge Original. -Kentucker Audley, 2023 "Too often we are spellbound by unhealthy people and relationships that are self-serving. Love Machine comedically explores the dynamic of a modern, dysfunctional relationship. It casts a light on the unbridled delusion, self importance, and narcissism that plague the parents of tomorrow." -me

Mother of the Dawn

Mother of the Dawn

In the early 1950s, in a remote corner of Brazil, a female truck driver named Tia Neiva started having visions of extraterrestrial spirits; shortly after, she began to gain a following, which led to her creation of a religion called Vale do Amanhecer (Valley of the Dawn) which practices various elements of Christianity, Spiritism, Umbanda, and religious beliefs in UFOs. In our documentary, Mother of the Dawn, we explore how this religion came to have 800,000 followers, but is virtually unheard of to the rest of the world.
