Universal Machine

Universal Machine

Shot in the Arabian desert with a haunting backdrop of the Burj Khalifa, Universal Machine is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a gifted young girl must find a way to understand and overcome a violent encounter with a life-like android New York-based director and artist Daniel Askill enlisted a host of international creative talent for this project. Renowned American minimalist composer Philip Glass scores an ominous orchestral piece undercut by a stirring mezzo-soprano. Belgian choreographer and Beyonce’s 2017 Grammy performance director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui planned the elaborate fight sequences, while the android was CGI mapped to Japanese dancer Tzuki Kozuki. The star of the film, Evnika Sadvakassova, is a boxer who gained the Guiness World Record for the most full contact punch strikes by a female in one minute. She won this accolade in 2018 at the age of 11. Read a Q&A about Universal Machine with Daniel Askill: https://bit.ly/2mzVltC

Hungry for bottomless powder, our crew packed their bags and headed for the snowy hills of Hokkaido for a two-week adventure, boards and snorkels in hand. Seasoned veterans Nicholas Wolken and Atsufumi Mizuno were joined by the fresh energy of our new friend Spencer O’Brien and the young legs of Lars Popp. Christoph Thoresen, Markus Fischer, and Neil Hartmann rounded out the gang behind the lenses, and together we aimed to take full advantage of all the things Japan is known and loved for, consistent snowfall and ramen included. We hope it shows! Frozen Ceiling

If the cameras freeze, they will stop working. It’s been a while since I released a film, or at least one I created purely for the sake of creating. Life can be often too distracting. Nothing brings you back to the present more so than some ice cold water and a little frost bite. The goal of this short piece was to explain the simplicity of a breath hold and the deeper thoughts in the mind when pushing your body to such limits. I just wanted to first off thank Geoff Combs and Andrew Ryzebol our fearless Canadian Ice guides.Thank you for dealing with us and keeping everyone safe under the ice. -https://geoffcoombs.com Written & Directed - Perrin James Freediver's - Ashley Baird + Andrew Ryzebol + Kim Kerts + Nick Fuists + Drew Herrick Music - Dark Tree - Carlos Cipa Trespasser - Ark Patrol And the world was gone - Snow Ghosts UW Cinematography - Perrin James UW camera OP - Geoff Combs Safety divers - Kerry Hollowell + Drew Herrick 1st AC - Anthony Rayburn Equipment - Last breath film Shot on Red Gemini with Nauticam Lastbreathfilm.com

'Nuance' A film by Brady Perron about Phil Casabon

'Nuance' A film by Brady Perron about Phil Casabon

Phil Casabon and Brady Perron sync up on a poetic level to showcase their skillsets, perseverance, personalities and surroundings. An adaptation of the Jay Electronica and The Bullits’ short film “Fuir et se Cacher”, Nuance takes time to address the moods and cycles that perpetuates the duo’s mindset in the pursuit of their vision. The film is a package of attitudes built up and stripped down to bring you a telling story of street skiing, one where you are left to read between the lines while still having punch. Perron and Casabon linger between the harsh conditions, dream-like scenarios and creative gestures in hopes to bring their audience something new. This is how long it took to gather and coordinate the four Kamchatka photoshoot essentials: The best local team, four world class kiteboarders, logistics (visas, permits, tickets, boat, tents, vehicles...), two photographers and a cameraman with unwavering dedication. After all these years, I had this bad feeling that I was expecting too much, that only disappointment awaited me. The same feeling you get before a New Year's party full of false resolutions. So, it was with a heart full of passion and fear that I began this trip into the depths of Russia. Located in the far east of Russia, Kamchatka is a huge volcanic peninsula covering 270,000 km². It was classified as an "ultra-secret" military zone at the end of the Second World War; the peninsula was therefore closed to visitors until the 90s. This has preserved the authenticity of the place and nature there has remained almost intact. Special permits are needed to venture from the capital and there is little to no infrastructure to get around. The Pacific coast receives swells and winds, and it was there that we would be hanging out. Starring: Mallory de la VILLEMARQUE, Paul SERIN, Camille DELANNOY, Maxime CHABLOZ. The Scroll of The Prophet Isaiah

The Scroll of The Prophet Isaiah

"I work after his voice and do exactly what he says to do... He put up what colors he want. I don't know about them. " - One day, in May of 2018 as I was driving through Niagara Falls, NY, I passed a home unlike anything I had ever seen before. I slammed on the brakes and reversed to take some pictures of this stunning and unusual work of art tucked away in an otherwise unremarkable neighborhood. As I finished, a man who was sitting across the street called me over to talk. His name was Isaiah and the conversation that began on that day culminated in this short film. Maybe our encounter was meant to be. In honor of Isaiah, I hope you enjoy it. - Shot with a Fujifilm X-T3 and then printed on to Kodak 50D 16mm film. - Featuring: Isaiah Robertson Assistant Camera: Mike Ford Film Processing: Niagara Custom Lab Music: Luke Atencio “Long Distance” via Musicbed Sound Mix: Leo Hicks at Apollo Studios Colorist: Clinton Homuth at Artjail Assistant Colorist: Kevin Wu Special Thanks: Gloria Robertson & Catherine Demmer - https://ift.tt/2M5a3mO

Ilulissat Icefjord - Timelapse Film from Greenland

Ilulissat Icefjord - Timelapse Film from Greenland

Experience a beautiful timelapse trip to the Ilulissat Icefjord. This timelapse film project is made by photographer Bo Normander and timelapse expert Casper Rolsted. Photographer: Bo Normander https://ift.tt/2IpuqZo https://ift.tt/2Ir6iWp Timelapse editor and sounddesigner: Casper Rolsted https://ift.tt/2JRmvEb https://ift.tt/2XWyNFp https://ift.tt/2hZSR3a https://ift.tt/2AKKwsI ILULISSAT ICEFJORD - Greenland Ilulissat Icefjord is a natural site of outstanding beauty created by inland ice and gigantic icebergs from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier at the head of the fjord. In 2004, Ilulissat Icefjord was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, hence achieving the highest international recognition for nature of irreplaceable value. The purpose of the World Heritage List is to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage from destruction and stringent requirements are enforced to be admitted to the list. The Icefjord is 4 to 6 km wide and 70 km long. It is shaped like an elongated trough formed by drifting glacial ice that has cut deep into the bedrock for millennia like a river of gravel, stone, and ice. The fjord is over a thousand metres deep but at the mouth of the fjord, where it meets Disko Bay at Sermermiut south of Ilulissat, the largest icebergs run aground on the Iceberg Bank as the fjord here is only 200 to 300 metres deep. The banks were made up in pre-historic times by glacial deposits of stone and eroded material. It is an amazing view from Sermermiut overlooking the stranded icebergs – the largest of which can extend up to 100 metres above sea level. Over the past ten years, the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier has doubled its speed so that today it moves at about 40 metres per day. That makes it one of the world's fastest glaciers. It calves an impressive 40 to 50 cubic kilometres of ice a year, equivalent to one tenth of the total production of icebergs from the Greenland ice sheet. If this amount of ice was melted it would provide enough water to cover all of the United States' annual water consumption. The largest icebergs from Sermeq Kujalleq are up to 1.5 cubic kilometres with a height of up to 120 m above sea level. However, the majority of an iceberg, over 80% of its mass, is located below sea level. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier contributes to a rich marine environment in several ways. The melt-water from the glacier ice contains varying quantities of nutrients and the icebergs create turbulence in the water column when they melt or turn around. This brings relatively warm and nutrient-rich water from deeper layers to the surface. Along with the tide, which is up to three metres between high tide and low tide, these conditions create a dynamic environment that enhances planktonic growth, which in turn attracts fish and sea mammals. The Icefjord is particularly known for its fine stocks of halibut. The icebergs also make large parts of the fjord unreachable and therefore wildlife is relatively well protected from hunting and fishing.

GUN SHOP

GUN SHOP

This film shows 2,328 firearms, out of the 393 million currently in the US. Arranged in a dizzying 24 frames per second progression, from handguns to semi-automatic assault rifles, "Gun Shop" encourages viewers to critically examine America’s love affair with guns. Director Statement: Over the past few years I’ve learned the striking visual power of objects. The every day objects that surround us in our lives, or are displayed in the media, are a credible vehicle for expressing many ideas about our world, if organized to do so. They are very often mundane, but sometimes extraordinary. I discovered that a simple 24 frames per second juxtaposition and choreographed audio sync can bring these objects to life, creating a mesmerizing effect that has the distinct ability to convey complex ideas, and concise visual interpretations of culture, economics, personality and philosophy. Tsavo Trust

“Many people didn't realize that these elephants actually existed” With ivory to the ground and weighing at least 100 lbs per tusk, the 'super tusker' elephant is the closest thing to a pre-historic creature that still resides on this planet. Yet, there only remain a handful of them in Kenya as they face immense pressure and challenges. This is the story of the few remaining super tuskers in Kenya and those who work to protect them. The elephants symbolize an important conversation about the fight for space between humans and all wildlife as our global population continues to increase. We hope this film reminds us of the extraordinary living creatures that we share on this planet of ours - and that its existence is one worth fighting for. Stormscapes 4

Stormscapes 4

For a few months out of every year, the northern high plains bear witness to some of the most incredible and beautiful severe weather events on the planet. Rotating and rolling monsters composed of moisture and heat, sculpted into towering behemoths by wind and terrain. I do hope that this timelapse short film does these terrifically terrifying beasts of the sky justice. Keep in mind that everything about this video is over the top. It's bombastic, slow, fast, then slow, then fast, has cows mooing somewhere, is weirdly edited and paced, and overall a little bonkers. But these storms are bonkers. Especially the nocturnal ones. Severe systems displayed in this video include diurnal supercells (mostly LP and hybrid), tornadoes, mesoscale convective systems, and my favorite, the nocturnal low level jet driven supercell. Possibly not a real thing. But also a real thing. If you're interested in assisting me in paying for gas to photograph additional severe weather, I've set up a gallery of individual 4K still images taken from Stormscapes 4. Each image is available for purchase digitally for only 5 US dollars. Personal use only, but you can print them out or use them as a desktop/home screen. Or whatever other creative ideas you might have. https://ift.tt/2mQ83VE Visual elements copyright Nicolaus Wegner 2019. From Nothing to Something

From Nothing to Something

Why is the creative act so at the core of being human? And how does something come from nothing? This film is born from a collective investigation into the transformative magic - the special alchemy of senses, creativity, and action - that is inspiration. According to the English dictionary, inspiration is "a mental stimulation to do and feel something" and this film echoes that emotions are a powerful catalyst for creating new work. We can feel angry, joyful, jealous, sad, nervous, and should pay more attention to these emotions. We can harness them as tools for creativity. The film was developed as an"exquisite corpse". Through the involvement of a group of pretty inspiring individuals, we hope this film is a testament to a creativity that transcends any particular fad or style. Big shout outs to Antfood for the incredible sound design and to all our creative partners - truly making this something, from nothing! MAGIC FLUIDS HDR

MAGIC FLUIDS HDR

HDR//4K//60fps SDR: https://ift.tt/2mocgzK MAGIC FLUIDS focuses on the development of traditional fluid art and color pouring methods for video on the macro scale. The challenge for me was to minimize randomness and to really get control over the fluids in terms of form, speed and direction. I ran R&D for a few month and poured several hundred sheets of paper with paint to finally get a handful of stable methods. This is a very clean style with an almost graphic CG-look, but all properties of real organic visuals. Almost all effects you see in this video were created in camera. The only thing I added in post was lightning on a few shots. The most important thing for me was to create a practical effect where a color appears from nothing on a totally black canvas and expands to all sides. To achieve this, I made use of a layering technique by stacking paints with different densities and blend them with a flow release medium. Over time, the lower layer breaches the upper layer and starts to float on top. You cannot tell exactly where the top layer will breach, but you have a few seconds to reframe as you see the bottom layer shimmering through. Another issue I wanted to solve for years was color separation when using marbling techniques. To get clean separation and fast motion at the same time, I worked out a method with printer refill inks and a set of different base mediums to mix each color with. You can see the results in the second part of MAGIC FLUIDS. Finally, the colors. I decided to limit myself to cyan, magenta and yellow and to get rid of any glitter and metallic this time. In the first part of the video, the edit shuffles back an forth between mono-chromatic and multi-colored scenes several times, because I wanted to establish all the 3 primaries and emphasize their impact when they blend to the full spectrum CMY/RGB. You never can tell to what hue the mixture finally shifts, but I saw pretty much all colors I could think of during these shoots. Available in 4K 60fps HDR. " SAMBAL SAMBAL " feat. Ainara Aymat & Lee Ann Curren

“Sambal Sambal” is just the continuation of “Sambal”, a little project that Ainara and me put together last year. Everything was really improvised, as it happened during a layover in Indo with the simple idea of just showing up a bit of who she is, without any other message behind. The project was so well received that we decided to take a little step further and make a second part, “Sambal-Sambal”. This year we decided to add more sambal and also another spicy guest as Lee Ann Curren. Let's enjoy with us and check this spicy second part.

HOME WILD HOME By Montanus

HOME WILD HOME By Montanus

Francesco and Giorgio, aka Montanus, decided to dedicate a video-tribute to the land where they were born and still live, celebrating the magnificent mountains where their desire to explore the wilderness has grown. ‘Home Wild Home’ is the latest film by Montanus, but it doesn’t tell of an expedition in a remote land like those they made in Patagonia and Iceland. Montanus duo created a sort of tribute in honor of their own land, filming the backyard trails that link their hometown L’Aquila, in central Italy, with the massif of Gran Sasso d’Italia, where highest peaks of Apennine mountains are located. In this mountain enviromental they started appreciating wilderness and developing the outdoor skills that has allowed them to travel and explore remote and wild lands. ‘Home Wild Home’ is more than a bikepacking film, it’s a sign of gratitude to their own land and an encouragement to the recovery of L’Aquila, hit by a devastating earthquake 10 years ago. Max Cooper - Parting Ways - Official Video by Maxime Causeret

Max Cooper - Parting Ways - Official Video by Maxime Causeret

Listen here: https://ift.tt/2NYiIIQ The new album project is full of scores to infinite visualisations, so it needed some spacey synth noodlings to match. It's the first time I've made a live improvised piece of music, it gives it a different feel, less precise arrangement, constant patch morphing and more flow. Something to get lost in hopefully. Myself on synths, Six Sigma on bassline, and Adam Betts on drums. I added some detailing later and the big retro snare etc, but the core synth and basslines that run throughout came from that initial jam session. The track is called 'Parting Ways', and is set to a video sequence by the awesome Maxime Causeret, telling the story of creation via endless division. You'll see the references to old video projects in there too, it was one part of the new story which overlapped with some old ones. - - - MAXIME CAUSERET: I've tried to start from a very simple element a box and make it split again and again in order to create more complex structures. It ends up to the universe splitting into multiverses that loops back to this box splitting and splitting again, in an infinite loop. As a funny fact, I often get crazy scales while zooming out, with a few unexpected bugs like min and max slope values in Houdini animation editor. I hope you will enjoy this animation. I have to thanks 2 collaborators that helps me on this project: Leslie Murard and Gratien Vernier. And yet it all seems limitless - One year around the world (4K)

And yet it all seems limitless - One year around the world (4K)

My girlfriend and I embarked on April 2017 on this epic life-changing experience around the world. We came back one year later with our minds blown away. As a dying android once said: “I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.” As months went by, I never ceased to be amazed by the diversity and the boiling life of our planet, I wanted to share this feeling with others and make a tribute to the Earth and its inhabitants, at a special time in our history when carefulness and respect are most needed. This video showcases one year around the world, from underwater to 6000m peaks, from active volcanoes to Asian temples, a journey of a lifetime. I also made a short video with only drone shots from this journey: https://ift.tt/2EWNoaS. I came back in spring 2018 with around 7 TB of data (about 120 hours of videos and 40 000 pictures). The editing was done on and off with other regular jobs at the same time, it was spread over several months. French and English subtitles available. For the people interested in the technical side, it was shot with a GH5, Mavic Pro and GoPro Hero5, across 14 countries and 3 continents over a year of travel in 2017-2018. Some shots from the GH5 are 10 bits, mostly sunrises, sunsets and portraits of people. I mostly used 2 lenses: Olympus M.Zuiko ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO and Panasonic Lumix G 42,5 mm f/1.7. I used extensively a Pilotfly H2 gimbal. Edited and color graded with Premiere Pro and After Effects CC 2019, shots cleaned with Neat Video. I used FilmConvert. Music:

Winter Islands

Winter Islands

I spent one of the harshest months of the year wandering and trekking over a few of the more northern islands in the world. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but nothing could quite prepare me for the brutal shooting conditions and loneliness of a month alone in those parts. It pushed me to my limits. Many would prefer the more tropical islands but for me the winter islands are where I come alive. The cold otherworldly landscapes and deep dark color palettes contrast meeting the warm and inviting people that have made these places home. Music: By me Locations: Faroe Islands, Lofoten , Dover
