FISHΞRMAN

FISHΞRMAN

FISHΞRMAN is the life cycle of a creative mind. A fisherman harvests wealth, represented by Ξ, the symbol that pivots between two worlds. The underlying themes of the film are the accumulation and disintegration of wealth and the transition between two worlds. Smaller motifs come from Jean Michel Basquiat, which appear in the body paint, the graffiti "SAMO AS A CURRENCY," and in the title of the final piece "SAΞMO." I think of the combination of fleshy pinks and gold accents as the primary palette of life. This abstract short film is the culmination of my last eight months in the NFT space. I was deeply inspired by this massive shift in the digital art world. Soundtrack by Coolbreez + Kace.beats.

SATELLIKE

SATELLIKE

SATELLIKE - artistic sceneries of Asia, created with ink on a piece of paper. This project was initiated by a job I did for the National Palace Museum of Taipeh. The museum ran an exhibition on culture treasures of the history of Taiwan in 2020. I was hired to create fluid and abstract interpretations of some iconic items, a collection of several drawings and artworks. I decided to develop my existing methods further, stepping away from stock paints and ink and creating most of the paints myself. One important aspect was to implement natural colors and realistic earth tones to the color palette and focus more on details than on a commercial look with punchy color and contrast. Over a period of 4 months, I experimented with natural substances like sand, stone powder and historic pigments. Some of these supplies are rare and expensive, for example jade and malachite powder. What you see in SATELLIKE are very long shots of watery ink in motion on several coats of half dried paint. Drying the paint leads to organic structures which can be brought to life again with water, ink and sour flow release mediums. The results look different from my usual approach, way more realistic and less otherworldly. I was excited about the aesthetics of the images and decided to do an individual piece. Although this is the final result for now, it feels more like I’m at the very beginning. Thanks for watching. _________________________________________________________ This video is available in 8K SDR and HDR for commercial usage. Remember being young and blissfully ignorant? Remember how much easier it was to be happy when you cared less? The theme of the song “we don’t have to know” embodies this carefree spirit and living freely attitude. STORIES FROM THE INSIDE, Hospital Care for People In Prisons

STORIES FROM THE INSIDE, Hospital Care for People In Prisons

Hospital clinicians do not generally receive any training about the health or service needs of prisoners. To engage hospital staff in these issues, an animation directed by Tjoff Koong Studios and produced by Passion Pictures has been created based on data collection from people in prison. The interviews gathered from people in prison proved to be a powerful script for the film. The short film offers real insight, with real voices from prisoners and acts as a starting point for discussion around positive changes that can be made to maintain dignity for people in prison and also to offer advice and support for staff. The duration of the track is 5 minutes and 13 seconds and has an accompanying experimental music video. We combined several techniques to bring to life the meaning of the music. The use of continuous rhythmic cycles illustrates birth and the continuous movements of life as well as adding textures to the music. In order to create the image birth and the perpetual motions of life that follow it, the film begins with a lone professional dancer, stark against a dark background, birth. Then, we used post-production effects to multiply her movements, the motions. These sequences represent the past, the present and the future, the cycle of life, creatures continually being born and dying. Macro shots on the moving dancer’s skin mimic an insect ready to emerge from its chrysalis. The camera transforms the visual experience in a sensory experience. In erasing the body contours of the filmed subject, we were able to creates new visible shapes, lines, textures and sensations. This piece of art sets out to capture through film the sensitive and pure nature of movement; exploring both free and mechanical movement. The camera does not follow the dancer, rather remains stationary as the dancer’s movements create life within the frame. The imagery of birth is continued by inter-cutting shots of the dancer with shots of butterflies hatching from their chrysalis’ – a rare phenomenon to capture on film, especially in nature. To achieve this, we filmed the metamorphosis of the caterpillars in a small light box. The butterflies hatched early in the morning (between 6 and 8am), approximately 2 weeks after the caterpillars had created their chrysalises. They were filmed against a black background. The chrysalises were hooked by their silk thread to a flowering branch. Lit by LED tubes, using the colors red, yellow and blue, in addition, a little 24 Watts projector was used. The colors carry through the piece, tying it together, whether it is from the light or the clothes’ color. To visualize the layers of the music, we worked on a series of macro photos which we edited in throughout the track as ‘glitches’. The photos are visually independent of the video but are compatible with the dancer’s movements. To capture these varied images, we had to travel to a number of different locations (cities and forests alike). The process was complicated as in editing we had to align the central focus of each photograph in order to create fluidity in the transition between each of the 25 images that appeared per second. Our society is made up of individuals, all distinct from one another, and each with their own subjectivity. The animal kingdom is no different. Perhaps, in accepting our similarities to other creatures we can learn to stop viewing ourselves as superior to other life on earth. In doing so we may learn ways to better ourselves and our society to create a future beneficial to each of us. Insects may seem so far removed from us but in observing them we would be able to identify something akin to our cultures. In many parts of the world, children are leading an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, threatening both their short and long-term health. But the Swedish non-profit organization Generation Pep wants to change that – by creating a unique choreographed dance featuring 10.000 steps, to the iconic track D.A.N.C.E by Justice. According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, childhood obesity is one of the most serious global public health challenges of the 21st century, affecting every country in the world. In just 40 years, the number of school-age children and adolescents with obesity has risen more than 10-fold, from 11 million to 124 million (2016 estimates). Around the Block

Around the Block

'Around the Block' is a passion project of mine that focuses on street artist David Zinn. I began work on it through my own sense of creative frustration, with the loose idea being 'I want to go and make a film about a street artist'. But when it came to editing it, it felt more apt for it to become an analogy for what it's like to be involved in the creative process that perhaps anyone in a creative industry can identify with. Much like David finds inspiration in the cracks, streaks and specks on the pavement, I personally find that getting out and finding shots with a camera in my hand is far more fluid and inspiring than sitting at home and trying to come up with ideas. The final piece is no longer a film specifically about street art, but a study of the process involved in making ideas come to life - told through a tour of David's world alongside the characters that live within it. If nothing else, hopefully it encourages someone else to go out and create something just... because.

All the sets within “Don’t Wait Up” were hand-made using cardboard, card-stock, and hot glue guns. Textures were printed off and then applied to the cardboard structures to make the sets feel life-like. In addition to this, 1:12 scale miniatures were also sprinkled into each scene to add even more realism. We directed Taylor’s performance remotely from Oklahoma + Seattle and then edited that footage into the video playing on the phone throughout the video. RE-ENTRY (Short film)

RE-ENTRY (Short film)

SYNOPSIS: When a man dies in a traffic accident and gets into a conversation with God, he gets an answer to the biggest question of life. Based on a short story by Andy Weir. Website portfolio: www.ikbenbrand.nl Instagram: instagram.com/benbrandamsterdam/ DIRECTORS STATEMENT Seven years ago I read the short story "The Egg" by writer Andy Weir somewhere on the internet. I have no idea where, but it caught my eye. Four years ago I decided to really do something with it. I arranged the rights and immediately started. That also took three years because I wrote a lot of (completely different) scripts, put the idea back in the drawer, took it out again, tried something, threw it away, etc., etc. The story kept coming back to me, until i finaly found the right tone for it with the help of voice over actor Johnny Bang Reilly. After raising all the money to finance the $74K budget film, myself and the director of photography traveled to three different continents and shot over a five month period in total. With only just the two of us, we were operating simultanelously as DP, DIRECTOR, LIGHT, FOCUS, FIRST AD, PROD ASSISTANT and more.. It was an incredible journey across the world. From the forests of Belgium and the desert of Namibia to the jungle of Thailand to the totally destroyed city of Mosul in Iraq where bloody bomb vests and other human remains where still lying in between the rubble that ISIS had left behind. We were there. Almost one year later the film is finally premiering and screening online in a world that seems to be even more divided than ever. That's why I hope this film can evoke even the slightest positive feeling and love for ourselves and also everyone around us. SHORT Q&A What inspired you to adapt the short story? What was the process like? The original short story from Andy Weir, called The Egg, was one of those stories that went really viral when it was released back in the day. I remember reading it online for the first time and it gave me goosebumps. It was inspiring in a way that made me feel connected to everyone. It was a feeling that I always had about the world, so I connected to it personally. The film features snapshots of places and people all over the world. Did you shoot all of that, or was it stock footage? No, we shot everything. That was one thing I maintained from the start - I didn’t want a single shot that we hadn’t done ourselves. It was very important to me as a filmmaker to be able to clearly say that there was no stock material, no random shots all put together. Every shot that’s in there was thought-out and specifically recorded for each moment in the film. We shot in Namibia, Thailand, Iraq, the Netherlands and Belgium. Aside from our main character, played by Issaka Sawadogo (Night of kings): the rest of the cast were all non-actors. For example, when we went to Namibia for our first shooting period, we went to this tribe named the Himba tribe, right in the middle of nowhere. It’s really beautiful there. Our way of shooting was to capture everything authentically, finding things that were actually there. There was nothing that was faked, or created especially for the film - apart from the forest shoot in Belgium with the car crash. We wanted everything authentic and beautiful. It made me realise that, by travelling all over in such a short period of time and meeting all these different people, that we’re really all the same. The connectedness that we explore in the film is really what I felt on the trip back. I think, in real life, if you meet all these different people from around the world with different faiths and beliefs, we’re all the same in essence. It was really beautiful to experience and I’m also really happy we were able to shoot the film back before the Coronavirus pandemic, because I don’t think we could have made the film otherwise.
