Azikiwe Mohammed is a Guy Who Makes Stuff | Art21 "New York Close Up"

What is the story of New York City, and who gets left out? “The word artist is a little funky … I would self-describe as a ‘guy who makes stuff.’” Rejecting the centuries long cult of the genius artist, Azikiwe Mohammed embraces the modest, the eclectic, and above all the helpful. Mohammed works in a range of mediums and skill sets from painting to puppets to furniture to tapestries, informed by the unpretentious aesthetics of the Black homes and spaces he traverses. Exploiting what he describes as a “bonus of the art space”, Mohammed sells and exchanges these art objects to operate more “useful to humans” activities. In his home of New York City the artist organizes free food distribution across the boroughs through the New Davonhaime Food Bank, and creates space for creative expression through his free mobile school, the Black Painters Academy. For his latest project, Mohammed opens Big Apple Gifts and Souvenirs in the Seaport area in Lower Manhattan, selling classic souvenirs like shirts, umbrellas, and jewelry that nod to the people and neighborhoods typically overlooked in New York City tourist shops. Animated by Mohammed’s humor and energy, this short documentary film captures an artist charting a creative path uniquely his own, sharing the fruits of his labor with the communities of New York City. We were commissioned by CreateMe Technologies to produce a film with a series of abstract fabric animations, showcasing the power and potential of the company's technologies for innovative manufacturing and fabric customizations. The main objective was to find the golden ratio between a brand and an artistic, satisfying and abstract film that allows the viewer to merge within the digital realm. We used digital techniques such as material scanning, fabric simulations and 3D rendering. The idea was to go through the 3D route where we were able to have the full creative freedom to mirror the advanced technologies of the company by reproducing fabrics that resemble the real look and feel with a hyperreal surreal language. I wanted to translate the song into a powerful video around homecoming and the feeling of home - that goes beyond blood relations and extends to friendships and community. I envisioned poetic images like memories that are not tied to a specific time or place, rather focus on the feeling. Images that are stripped down to the core of human emotions.  Oumou Sangare is a powerful feminist and has used her platform to speak out about women’s rights for decades. The concept for the video was to create different vignettes with strong female characters and juxtapose them creating a unique visual canon about home from a female perspective. Shot in a 4:3 format the scenes appear like paintings or windows into women’s lives, loosely connected by the same feeling of bittersweet love, joy and pride. Behind closed doors, professional skier Drew Petersen has been living a much different reality than ski films, magazine covers, and Instagram likes have shown. Following a near-death accident in the mountains, Petersen went into a dark tailspin of mental health struggles. In the following years, he has privately navigated an arduous journey of PTSD, bipolar disorder, brain injury rehabilitation, and suicidal thoughts. Told through the lens of ski touring, “Ups and Downs” is an introspective look at the mountains and valleys along his path, and how his mental health journey is ultimately lifelong—both from well before Petersen’s accident and for the rest of his life moving forward. His story is truly one of finding the light, healing both in the mountains and in therapy, and how giving voice to his struggles ultimately saved him.
