"The Nannies" is the 2021 Staff Pick Award Winner at Palm Spring ShortFest. “The Nannies” is a performative documentary with plenty of creative energy driving a deeply personal project. When filmmaker Signe Barvild Stæhr was just five years old, her mother died unexpectedly in the middle of the night. Signe remembers only very little from that time in the late 1980s, and her father doesn’t like to talk about it. In order to fill in the many gaps, she contacts the several nannies who helped out in their household the following years. It turns out that they all remember things in their own way. The stories of the past are conjured up through aesthetically refined reconstructions of life in the suburbs.

Composed of a single take, “Incomplete” invites us to traverse an endless choreography of bodies in perpetual free-fall and updating images that reflect a world in constant change. "Incomplete" is an ode to what artist and media theorist Hito Steyerl coins the "poor image." The image which is collected, copied, and processed to the point of disorientation and anonymity. The image which is not one but consists of many while presenting a different perception of coherency. Fugue

The film is a set of exactly repeated actions, but each time using different objects. It uses the structure of the fugue to create the films narrative, playing on the fugues characteristic of stating the subject in different voices. Fugue in A major by Dmitri Shostakovich is a very interesting piece as it contains no harmonic dissonance at all. The Fugue was an outlier in a larger collection of Preludes and Fugues which at the time was panned by critics for being very harsh and dissonant. The piece was written in 1950’s Russia under Stalin's regime and might have been a veiled criticism where any less subtle forms of criticism could have been very dangerous. Shostakovich had already been denounced for political incorrectness in 1948 by the communist party chairman, Andrei Zhdanov and lived under a persistent fear of the numerous purges that were taking place across Russia at that time. The piece is performed by Sviatoslav Ricther in 1956 in Prague.

Присвячується всім моїм чудовим друзям, а також жахливим стереотипам і помилковим уявленням про цю прекрасну частину світу. プラン無し、予算も無し。飛行機のチケットを片手に48時間で作り上げた映像です。 キエフで過ごした私の思い出の一部。この作品は私の素晴らしい友人たち、くだらない偏見を持つ人たちと、この素晴らしい場所が世界に存在する事をまだ知らない人たちに捧げます。 If you can't tell already, this film is a parody of how the rest of the world has painted Ukraine. Even I was brainwashed by the Hollywood stereotypes until I visited Kyiv. It's a country that's gone through so much turmoil, but it's only made the locals stronger and more determined to turn things around. It isn't just the vast amount of locations and lack of regulations that make Ukraine special, but more so the people and their attitude towards "getting things done." Making this short film with no budget, no plans, just a plane ticket to Kyiv, and no warning for anyone involved was a blur, and after it was done, it felt like waking up from a coma.
