THE LAST HONEY HUNTER

THE LAST HONEY HUNTER

In the steep mountain jungles of Nepal’s Hongu river valley, members of the isolated Kulung culture have risked their lives for generations scaling dangerous cliffs to collect a wild and toxic honey. Deep and dark, the film glides through a misty world of forest spirits, dreams, and woodsmoke to share the story of the leader of the harvest and his final journey. We owe our access to this story and the trust of the Kulung community to the decade of work the dZi Foundation https://dzi.org has done in this remote region of Nepal. It's been 15 years, and the girl in the hallway haunts him still. This is a testament to locked doors. A lullaby sung by wolves with duct tape and polaroids. Not all girls make it out of the forest. Loving Lofoten

Loving Lofoten

I spent 3 weeks in Lofoten, Senja, Andoya and Vesteralen and discovered the true beauty of this place. It's magical to see the mountains rise up from the sea, to see the fjords, the amazing landscapes, the midnight sun, the clouds, and the lovely villages. It was also a great time to visit the Lofoten Islands with it's 24 hours of daylight in the summer. I absolutely loved the midnight sun! I won't forget the midnight hike to the top of the Segla (Senja) or standing above the clouds in Tromso. This film is a collection of the unforgettable experiences. For licensing inquiries email dustin@dfvc.com Here is my second rendition of storm chasing with a Phantom Flex 4K. The best shots from two years of storm chasing jammed into 3.5 minutes. Stats: 35K miles traveled, 30 terabytes of hard drive space, 300 hours editing/coloring, 3 speeding tickets Technical info: The Phantom Flex4K is a camera that must be post triggered while shooting high speed. This works out well for capturing lightning because the camera is always recording and rewriting to internal ram. As soon as a bolt appears in my view finder I trigger the camera to save what has been stored in the ram. Shooting at high frame rates requires a lot of light. Therefore, I mostly used my Zeiss Otus 28, 55, and 85mm lenses wide open at f1.4. Aki Sasamoto: An Artist Walks into a Bar | Art21 "New York Close Up"

Aki Sasamoto: An Artist Walks into a Bar | Art21 "New York Close Up"

What happens when an artist gives up control? Mirroring its subject's own playful and absurdist sensibility, this portrait of sculptor and performance artist Aki Sasamoto is a fluid hybrid of fiction and documentary—at once a magical realist world of spinning objects and a psychological exploration of fundamental questions about artistic creativity. Drinking and bar culture has long served as a source of inspiration for the artist. With a real-world Brooklyn bar as the main stage for her deadpan performance style, a bartender acts as a sympathetic ear for Sasamoto's ruminations on past projects and recent motherhood. Embellished by CGI-style effects, the artist toggles between impromptu conversations and scripted performances, blurring the line between observable fact and subjective vision. From firing whiskey glasses at Urban Glass in Brooklyn to installing her exhibition, "Past in a future tense," at Bortolami Gallery in Manhattan, Sasamoto grapples with the tension between control and chaos—between her mastery over materials and their own will. "Whatever I thought I had control over, whatever I thought I was," explains Sasamoto, "will change in front of me and that to me is exciting, in life and in sculpture." Aki Sasamoto (b. 1980, Kanagawa, Japan) lives and works in New York. After the outcast Vendela has played a suicide tutorial from her YouTube channel in class, her teacher gets involved in the student’s life. The teacher’s involvement degenerates into a power game and a psychological thriller in an unsettling, and darkly comical, way that puts its finger on how social media is used as a status symbol among teenagers. Dear Richo

Dear Richo

A boy in the suburbs wants to escape. When I was 16, a couple of my friends killed a guy and buried the body in the bush. They waited for him to leave his house, grabbed him, tied him up, and threw them in the boot of the car. He was begging them near the dried up creek, crying for his life. It was serious, they were going to do it. At least that's what the rumour was. At the time I had no idea what to believe. I knew they had broken into cars to knick CDs and jewellery, sometimes stolen those cars for joyrides, huffing glue and smoking pot whenever they could get their hands on it. I know at least one of them is in jail now. But I also knew they exaggerated a lot about the stuff they got up to. They were bored and could find nothing better to do. One time I got mugged behind a mall car park. A group of about 6 people a bit older than me were drinking during the day and while I was on the way to the bus stop, they had a go at me. Punched me so hard I hit the floor, bleeding from the face and knees I ran away and didn't tell anybody. For months I had panic attacks whenever I left the house. About a year later, one of my friends introduced me to the guy that did it. I froze up completely. They started joking about it and he apologised, saying he was in a much better headspace now. Everyone was supporting him for being in a better place. I've noticed more and more how much your upbringing and your location can affect you. Sometimes people can get stuck in a toxic environment and feel like there is no way out. Our home is our identity, and while we're responsible for our actions, there is a darkness that can come from it that is difficult to shake away. And so: A bonehead moves on. - Written and Directed by Bryce Pemberton Sound Design by Ryan Pemberton Special thanks to: Claudia Chinyere Akole Lester Chan Nancy Li Ryan Pemberton

The Hand Of India

The Hand Of India

At the height of the Cold War, amidst growing tensions between the US and Russia, Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi traveled to Washington D.C to deliver a pragmatic speech on the subjects of communication, understanding and friendship. 35 years later, with increasing polarisation around the globe, her simple yet elegant message has never felt so relevant. However, it is in India, where Indira Gandhi's message still rings most true; somehow managing to make sense of a beguiling and beautifully chaotic society, with a rich reputation of inspiring swathes of Western visitors. Shot during a two month backpacking trip, with minimal camera equipment, this is my attempt to communicate the beauty of Indira's home country, along with the resonating themes she touched upon all those years ago. For everything you teach the World, thank you India. I love filming in the ocean more than anything, its not just a job, its a passion. And sometimes its nice just to document waves without surfers riding them. The feeling of jumping off the rocks in the dark by myself just to capture the very first rays of light hitting the ocean without another sole in sight is unexplainable, its one of the most amazing feelings ever, its like my own personal therapy. And to realise that you're the only person on this planet that got to witness these rare moments of absolute beauty as they happen is a really special feeling. And now im excited to share my experiences with you through my latest passion project "MOCEAN". Heres some of my favourite moments from 2018. All images where shot using The Phantom Flex 4K camera with Leica Summilux lenses and Chris Bryan Films custom underwater housing's. SCOTLAND in motion

SCOTLAND in motion

Experience a beautiful timelapse journey through the amazing landscapes of Scotland. In this film about the Scottish Highlands you will experience places like Glencoe, The Storr, Quiraing, Fairy Pools and many other places on the Isle of Skye. The shots are made in May 2019 where I had the pleasure to travel around the Scottish Highlands for two weeks. I had the pleasure to experience the spectacular Isle of Skye with a sunrise at the Storr, a long hike and lot of mist at the Quiraing and the beautiful Fairy Pools. In Glencoe I experienced the lakes Glencoe Lochan and Lochan Urr, Glen Etive with amazing still water, had an interesting and demanding climb to the top of Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in UK and finally made a timelapse at the Glenfinnan Viaduct with the steam train known from Harry Potter. FOLLOW MY WORK YouTube.com/CasperRolsted?sub_confirmation=1 Instagram.com/CasperRolsted Facebook.com/CasperRolstedVisuals Twitter.com/CasperRolsted Photographer, editor and sounddesigner: Casper Rolsted CasperRolsted.com Music: Peter Nanasi peternanasi.bandcamp.com FILM LOCATIONS IN "SCOTLAND in motion" 0:00 Eilean Donan Castle. Shot at sunrise. The rising and falling tide reveals that the water here is connected to the sea. 0:14 The Storr. View over the Isle of Skye. 0:18 Elgol. View to the mountains from the harbour. 0:23 Quiraing. The wind-blasted tree is a particular favourite of photographers. 0:28 Quiraing. The walk is a 7 km circuit with an ascent of 374 meters. Allow approximately 3 - 4 hours for this hike. 0:32 The Fairy Glen. The Fairy Glen is one of the Isle of Skye's most enchanting attractions. It is a delightful miniature landscape of grassy, cone-shaped hills. 0:37 Ben Nevis. The view from half way to the top. The trip to the top and back is 17 km and takes 7 to 9 hours. There is 1352 metres of ascent. Be very careful in misty weather and bring a map since the route is not very clearly marked. 0:42 Quiraing. Misty weather is not unusually in the Highlands. 1:05 Fairy Pools. Beautiful rock pools of crystal clear spring water fed by a series of waterfalls from the Cuillin Mountains. 1:15 The Storr. Sunrise from the top with view over the Isle of Skye and to the Old Man of Storr. 1:28 The Storr. The view after a short walk towards the top. The round trip is about 4.5km and 288 metres of ascent. It takes about 2 hours to walk. 1:37 Buachaille Etive Mòr. Pyramidal formed mountain at the head of Glen Etive. Shot in the morning from the Buachaille Etive Mòr Waterfalls. 1:41 Glencoe Lochan. Beautiful waymarked trails through ornamental woodland. The picturesque and serene woods contrasts with the wild and dramatic mountains. 1:45 Kilchurn Castle. The castle which today is a ruined structure was constructed in the mid-15th century. It is open to the public in summer. 1:50 Lochan Urr, Glen Etive. Beautiful small loch. The two mountains in the background are Buachaille Etive Mor and Buachaille Etive Beag. 1:58 Skyfall scene. This location is know from the James Bond movie Skyfall (2012). But instead of shooting towards Loch Etive I have made this timelapse towards south. 2:07 Mountains at Loch Lochy 2:12 Mountains at Lochan na h-Achlaise 2:16 Glenfinnan Viaduct. The viaduct is features in several of the Harry Potter movies. 2:25 Portree. The capital town on the Isle of Skye. I have here shot the rising tide which is over 3 meters. 2:33 Eilean Donan Castle. The same castle as the first shot in the film. Here it is shot at sunset from the hill. Repetition - Max Cooper

Repetition - Max Cooper

KEVIN MCGLOUGHLIN: 'Repetition' is an attempt to convey the importance of our endless endeavours toward human development and growth amidst a chaotic and disorienting landscape. The struggle for a fruitful future is challenging with the distractions of everyday life alongside its ever-growing technological 'advancements'. The hope is for humanity to strive through all of this in a meaningful and positive way. Directed: Kevin McGloughlin https://ift.tt/2OEEUW8 https://ift.tt/2Lso4KP --- MAX COOPER: I wanted to make something huge and intense for the new live show, so I went for a project attempting to visualise the infinite and its links to us in our everyday lives. For every chapter of the story I found a different technique to approach it, in this case, the simple idea of repetition. Apply it, and we have a form of infinity. This was also a natural fit for my music, where I had a nice excuse to push the repetitive boat out even more than usual. I kept it very stripped back to focus on the idea, with slow evolution and occasional variants to maintain some melodic engagement. Visually, I was lucky to get to work with one of my favourite artists, Kevin McGlouglin, where we told the human side of the story, our endless pursuit of growth and "progress", our duplication of built form and expanding cities, looking to an unbounded future of urban sprawl. It was an audio-visualisation encompassing the project title "Yearning for the Infinite". But despite our society-endangering issues around human consumption and sustainability, it wasn't supposed to be a doom scenario. We tried that musically and it didn't seem to fit. There was a back and forth on the ideas and their musical and visual representation, and what worked was something that for me seems more focused on the worth of our endless striving than its possible role in our downfall. Random Lessons Learned from Making Films

Random Lessons Learned from Making Films

A mix of things. Some opinions and things that might only be true for me. Some spoilers for Shazam, Annabelle Creation & Lights Out I guess.

Mexico: A Timelapse Project

Mexico: A Timelapse Project

The box is telling me, "Tell the story behind your video" Well, I think if I told the full story we'd all be sitting here until our butts went numb, so I'll sum up the important parts. Basically this project is my best attempt at a thank you gift (it probably would've been easier to send some flowers now that I think about it) to Mexico and all of the people I've met in the past couple of years from this amazing country. While I've been learning Spanish these last couple of years I've made as many trips to Mexico as possible to practice speaking. At least that's why I started visiting at first. Later I realized that that reason I kept going back wasn't mainly to practice my Spanish, but rather to be in company of the amazing people there. Did I fall in love with the country? Definitely, but more importantly I fell in love with the people, and that's the reason that I made this film. I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me in the making of this film and to all of the people who accepted me with open arms in Mexico. I really love you guys. "Mexico: A Timelapse Project" is the product of two years of learning Spanish to take a 6 month roadtrip and create a film of the most beautiful places I could find in Mexico. DISCLAIMER: Oh, yeah almost forgot. There is one shot that I took in california, the shot of the rainbow. Really just loved that shot and didn't want it to rot forever on a hard drive without anyone ever seeing it. ГЕРБ МОСКВЫ / COAT OF ARMS OF MOSCOW

ГЕРБ МОСКВЫ / COAT OF ARMS OF MOSCOW

There’s always something going on in Moscow. Only city’s coat of arms stays unalterable. It has four elements: a cavalryman, a horse, a spear and a basilisk. All of them can be redefined and merged into an image of slaying with the spear. Unique stories were created by 33 Russian artists who spoke to create a contemporary coat of arms of Moscow. Carved and built by diverse group of tribes, from Native Hawaiians, to the Paiutes of Bishop, California, and the Ancestral Puebloans of the Southwest, these petroglyphs and structures reflect the long standing interest in Ancient Astronomy which grew stronger as many of the tribes went from the Hunter Gatherer to the Agrarian societal orders. From references to the Sun carved in the rock, and interest in using the Sun to predict seasons (entire buildings built to essentially serve as sundials and calendars, a critical element in the farming communities) to those of 13 moons (lunar annual calendar), to carvings of stars and constellations, interest in celestial bodies is ever present across the indigenous communities of the United States. This video journeys to National Park Service sites from California, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, many of whom give us a glimpse of how the night sky may have appeared to the ancient inhabitants of those lands. Many of these places were named International Dark-Sky Parks by the International Dark-Sky Association, partly due to their remote locations, and partly due to the hard work by the National Park Service to preserve the quality of the night skies through lighting retrofits and educational programs about the night sky heritage and astronomy. The video also features 2018’s epic Lunar Eclipse, a.k.a. “Blood Moon,” seen at 1:03. This video was filmed as part of SKYGLOW (skyglowproject.com), an ongoing crowdfunded quest to explore the effects and dangers of urban light pollution in contrast with some of the most incredible dark sky areas in North America. This project is being produced in collaboration with International Dark-Sky Association (darksky.org), a non-profit fighting for the preservation of night skies around the globe. ------- Locations: Wupatki National Monument, Arizona Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico Bishop, California ------- The film was shot on Canon 5DIV cameras & lenses sponsored by Canon USA, aided by Alpine Labs' Michron & Pulse, powered by Paul C. Buff Vagabond Mini. LRTimelapse was used to process some of the shots. Adobe Lightroom and Premiere were used for editing and processing. ------- ANCESTRAL NIGHTS Photo Stills: https://bit.ly/30M7g6Y SKYGLOW Book Stills: http://bit.ly/2vXO7Ag Other Photos from SKYGLOWPROJECT.COM: https://bit.ly/2qXCjtG ------- Credits: Directors/Producers/Shooters: Harun Mehmedinovic & Gavin Heffernan Editor: Harun Mehmedinovic Music: Richard Lacy & Jeff Dale ------- Special Thanks: Geoff Goins & National Park Service, Bob Meadows & Sue Johnson-Erner, Stanley Merritt & Randy Stanley, Leila Conners, Mathew Schmid & Tree Media, Semezdin & Sanja Mehmedinovic, Aaron Mcnally, Alan Lewis & Canon Usa, Inc., Dara Grombliniak & Alex Sax, Greg Horvath & Alpine Labs, International Dark-Sky Association ------- Follow/Contact: Facebook facebook.com/skyglowproject Instagram: instagram.com/skyglowproject Email: info@skyglowproject.com For more videos please visit: vimeo.com/harun ------- This video is COPYRIGHT 2019 Harun Mehmedinovic & Gavin Heffernan / SKYGLOWPROJECT.COM. A blend of images, stories, essays, and anecdotal captions, SKYGLOW explores the history and mythology of celestial observation and the proliferation of electrical outdoor lighting that spurred the rise of the phenomena known as “light pollution,” a grave threat not only to our incredible starscapes but also to the very ecosystem itself.

Dirt Magic | From Dying Mining Town to Mountain-Bike Mecca

Patagonia presents “Dirt Magic,” a Teton Gravity Research and Freehub Magazine film documenting Downieville, CA’s journey from dying mining town to mountain-bike mecca. Inspired by a desire to save their home trails, shaped by a grassroot organization’s unintentional stewardship, and fueled by the sport’s rowdiest festival, Downieville’s newest dirt miners are using that reputation to create a model community for struggling mountain towns across the globe—and it all started with a van, a chainsaw, and a few maxed-out credit cards.

The Sign Project: That Hotdog Makes a Statement

Meet Dave Hebb, a self-identified commercial archaeologist who has been on an epic quest since 2012 to find all of Greater Boston’s Signtronix signs. Signtronix, a California-based sign manufacturer, caters to small businesses across the United States but as Boston continues to expand and build, these signs are increasingly being abandoned. Follow Dave as he meets the owners of these signs and learns the history of not just the buildings and businesses, but the histories of the people who still own these signs.
