Freedom Is A Serious Crime

Freedom Is A Serious Crime

This is a glimpse of the protests that have been taking place in Hong Kong for the last months. The film encapsulates some of the events that occurred during the period 9.12 to 10.21, 2019. Millions of people poured onto the streets only to note how the city's unelected CE turned a deaf ear to their demands. As a result, several incidents have happened all across the city. The movement that seeks greater democracy and freedom has been on a standstill since the outbreak of Covid-19. As protesters lose international momentum due to the pandemic, Beijing's central government intends to enact the National Security Law, violating the agreements reflected in Hong Kong's Basic Law and breaking the "One Country, Two Systems" premise. Under the new law, dissent will be effectively criminalized. Freedom of speech will be restricted, including controls of what is published online. The once self-proclaimed 'Asia's Finest' Police Force has become a source of hatred, with countless claims of brutality and abuses of power. Tear gas rounds shot by officers are counted by the (ten) thousands, as are the protestors that have been arrested. Most recently, these include 15 veteran pro-democracy activists and lawmakers. No police officer has been held accountable for the time being, despite the vast amount of misconduct evidence caught on camera. Filmed and edited by Rafa Zub. TO THE SURFACE.

TO THE SURFACE.

LEARN MORE: https://ift.tt/2WXynMX . “This whole crisis shows that we need to feed ourselves as close to home as we can.” -Jason Jarvis, local RI fisherman . Like most things, Covid-19 wreaked havoc on the RI seafood industry. We wanted to explore this topic to raise awareness to the struggles and try to find some common sense solutions to the challenges (while being mindful of safety and social distancing). Our DP Tyler Murgo grew up seeing his family harvest seafood from wild places. As everything falls apart, it feels urgent to capture the wisdom and perspectives of local fishermen during this historical moment. Some close to home, with Tyler’s brother Kenny Murgo, and others who have been fighting for change in RI for years like Jason Jarvis. Huge thanks to them for trusting us to tell their story. . During production, on May 1st 2020, an emergency action passed, temporarily allowing fishermen in Rhode Island to sell finned fish directly off the boat to consumers. The hope is to make this emergency regulation permanent. Here are few steps to move further towards developing a local market for the wild food that lives in our backyards. . 1. Go to your local port and try new fish you haven’t tried before. 2. Support small local fish markets that buy from local fishermen. 3. Demand local seafood from the restaurants and markets you go to. 4. Share this video with fellow Rhode Islanders . True Story: Ben Hildred

True Story: Ben Hildred

Ben Hildred has spent years in search of the eternal summer. A native of Lincoln, England, he milks the Northern Hemisphere’s warm months in places like Whistler, British Columbia, before absconding to Queenstown, New Zealand, to make the most of the Southern Hemisphere summer. Ben’s quest for the endless summer has allowed him to explore the world’s premier riding communities on his constant source of ground transportation—his mountain bike. He’s never owned a car, opting instead for two-wheeled freedom, whether commuting to work or simply riding his favorite trails. Ben’s daily bike time is sacred, offering space for relaxation and reflection, as well as serving up a perpetual series of self-conceived challenges. These challenges are anything but ordinary. In 2018, he successfully “Everested” the agonizingly steep Skyline access road to the Queenstown Bike Park, climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest’s 8,848 metres in a sleepless, 19-hour sufferfest. Having conquered Everest, Ben last year set his sights on an arguably bigger challenge: To climb 55,000 vertical metres in only 30 days, using his beloved Skyline access road as the principal conduit—all while holding down his full-time bike-mechanic job at Queenstown’s Vertigo Bikes. This meant dedicating December of 2019 to burning the candle at both ends, waking each day at 5 a.m. to grind out a minimum average of 1,834 vertical metres of ascending before opening the bike shop at 7:45 a.m. to work a complete shift. Over the course of 30 days, he climbed the Skyline access road 111 times—a feat that was rewarded with 111 blistering descents on the steep-and-rowdy bike park trails. For Ben, the challenge was its own reward. But bombing all those sweet downhills was the icing on the cake. Tāura

Tāura

Tāura is a polynesian legend. Tāura are animals, plants and minerals that are "allied" with humans, families, clans. They are considered fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters. The relationship with them is fraternal and respectful. The last long shot was certainely one of the dive I've ever done. I was so grateful to spend so much time with the mother and her baby. I choosed this letterbox cause it has a "vintage" look and it reminds me some really good memories. It also has the aspect (like a POV) of what I see with my mask during the dive. All was shot in Polynesia in november 2019. Ani Wa Sa

Ani Wa Sa

Ani Wa Sa is set in DR Congo’s Garamba National Park which is globally recognized as ground zero in Africa’s poaching wars. Fewer than 1,200 elephants remain. Two brothers who come from a line of central African Zande hunters, seek to protect their local forest from seemingly opposing avenues: one through family tradition and the other as part of a national park ranger team. Though their relationship has fractured, an advancing rebel group seeking to poach and traffick elephant ivory poses a mutual threat and the brothers may need each other to protect the people and wildlife of their homeland for generations to come.  Ani Wa Sa is being used in an innovative on-the-ground mobile cinema initiative to help build bridges of trust and collaboration between central African communities, conservation actors, and humanitarians, in an effort to improve the safety and build the resilience of people and wildlife in this fragile and interdependent ecosystem. As of March 31, 2020, Invisible Children has screened Ani Wa Sa in 67 communities in northeastern DRC and eastern Central African Republic (CAR), reaching 27,450 people.  This project is part of the USAID-funded Community Resilience in Central Africa (CRCA) Activity, an Invisible Children project made possible by the support of the American people. ‘I Can’t Stay at Home’

‘I Can’t Stay at Home’

Billy Yulfo has worked at Zabar’s, a gourmet grocery store in Manhattan, for 17 years. He worked his way up from cashier to assistant manager. When the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City, he had to grapple with a new identity: that of an essential worker. “I can’t stay at home, because I have two kids,” Yulfo says. “I won’t get paid if I don’t work, so I have to work. I have to put my health at risk every day out of necessity.” In a new documentary from The Atlantic, Yulfo invites us into his daily life at Zabar’s—a changed universe characterized by constant anxiety. “You can’t go anywhere and not think about it,” Yulfo says. “You can’t go to the bathroom and not think about it.” Yulfo lives in a one-bedroom apartment with his wife and two young children. He worries about taking the virus home; if he falls ill, he will have nowhere to isolate himself. While filming at Zabar’s, several employees told The Atlantic that a fellow grocery-store worker had died from COVID-19. Union Local 338 confirmed that the employee had worked at Zabar’s for 32 years. Zabar’s declined to comment on the death.

Scars: how our wounds make us who we are

Scars: how our wounds make us who we are

Scars are not just skin-deep: emotional and psychological histories lie beneath the healed wounds. In this documentary, we meet five different people whose scars forever changed how they see the world, and how the world sees them. Their scars are the result of war, self-harm, birth defects, cancer and domestic violence, and the subject of a collection of stories both extraordinary and everyday. These scars bear witness to our lived experience of love, loss, strength and overcoming the odds Key credits: Produced and Directed by Rebecca Lloyd-Evans and Laura Dodsworth Cinematographer: Annemarie Lean-Vercoe Editor: Noah Payne-Frank Composer: Pascal Wyse Researcher: Nasra Hassan Sound Mix: Ben Kape Grade: Ken Macfarlane Executive Producers for Tigerlily Productions: Natasha Dack Ojumu and Nikki Parrott Executive Producers for the Guardian: Lindsay Poulton and Charlie Phillips Source: The Guardian

Sincerely, Now Air

Sincerely, Now Air

Animated Shortfilm // 5:45 min // 2019 In an airplane, a surrounding where human error is not an option, flight attendants, decisively women are brought to embody flawless, authoritarian and at the same time highly empathic representants of human nature in order to create a fake-trust of comfort. If this fascade crumbles, especially in a life treatening situation, there is no space for hesitation or caution. In the shortfilm „Sincerely, Now Air“ a stewardess tries to bring a dying passenger back to life. Suddenly she has to deal with his death next to the requirements of her job. Hoping for a small withdrawl. Also the remaining passengers are thrown back to themselves weighing up over their little options for action. by Theresa Grysczok voice: Sofia Sheynkler music: Franziska Dürmeier sound: Eeva Ojanperä additional animation & setbuilding: Daniel Maaß compositing: Florian Maubach, Theresa Grysczok color grading: Mikola Debik https://ift.tt/3cm1bDK www.theresagrysczok.com instagram: @thegryla www.stickyframes.com instagram: @stickyframes

Sonic Boom - "Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper)" (Official Music Video)

Sonic Boom - "Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper)" (Official Music Video)

Directed and Animated by: James Siewert Additional Modeling: Auden Lincoln Vogel Rendering: RenderStreet Special Thanks: Charles Siewert, Lisa Park, Alessandro Zomparelli, The Blender Foundation ABOUT THE PROCESS: The basic animation was done in Blender. In order to keep the file sizes manageable, animation was designed to be modular: each file had a large head with a "world" contained in it and a smaller head inside that world. The camera was then animated so that the motion approaching the larger head exactly matched the motion approaching the smaller head and that the "hand off" between the two cameras was seamless. Because the two sizes matched, these pieces could be composited together - fading the smaller head from one file into the bigger head of the next. The next step was to populate the environments of the 16 different worlds. Mostly this work was a stream of consciousness - but was inspired a bit by images from Ernst Haeckel, Wassily Kandinsky, and Rene Magritte.  CGI animation can have a sterile quality that - though interesting to me - I feel usually calls to be responded to by some opposite creative impulse. This is why the video was inverted, printed out, scanned back in and reinverted - even this simple act allows the ink dyes to intermingle on the page and animation inherits the tactility of that particular process. As the video progresses I added more chemical processes to the final image to increase this sense of physicality. When alcohol and ink are applied to stacks of printed frames they bleed through many pages, the stain patterns evolving organically from one page to the next. Once the consecutive pages are scanned back in the result is that the stains appear to bloom and develop in motion. Finally, for the final section of animation, the files were re-rendered as line art, printed out, and soaked in water, which causes the inks to run. When the images are scanned back in and inverted this creates glowing linework, which is composited on top of the "normal" printed images. The hope was to give the piece a natural conclusion by moving the images farther and farther away from the photographic (or pseudo-photographic), and towards abstraction - not just in the worlds depicted but by the way the image itself is constructed.

Night Light

Night Light

An exercise in light painting and parallax displacement to create the illusion of 3D (or 2.5D) and motion in a series of still photographs captured after nightfall. This film is comprised entirely of still images. All motion achieved in post production. The only time lapse shots are the star trails. All other shots are typically comprised of between 3 and 5 exposures of the same subject, but with different lighting in each, then blended together or transitioned between to give the effect of seamless motion. The COVID19 pandemic forced me to put a number of projects on hold. Being unable to shoot anything new I took the opportunity to look back through my astrophotography and nightscape work from the past couple of years. I put this film together as a reminder of what exists outside my four walls and so others can enjoy the wonders of the night sky from their solitary confines. After The Fall

After The Fall

I've been using this time in isolation to dive a little deeper into my fascination with the mysteries of the esoteric and occult. One tool that I've found really helpful right now is the Tarot. In these times of great disruption and uncertainty, the archetypes and stories that are contained within these cards can bring a lot of clarity and direction. I wanted to share a little about my experience with those who might not be as familiar, so I made this video. If this resonates, let me know. I might do more of these if people find them helpful.

After the outbreak of COVID-19 and the beginnings of global lockdown, we sent out a call to animators from around the world to send us a short animation depicting something positive they have experienced, seen, or thought in the midst of this strange time. Over 90 animators sent us their contributions, and this is the first film out of a series of three. We hope it will encourage people to stay home and see that there are still some positives to come of it. PRINCE JOSH - THE JOY

PRINCE JOSH - THE JOY

A film for "The Joy' By Prince Josh. Featuring the Joy of: Geist, Jacques Greene, Ciel, Teesh, Karim Olen Ash, Forevernextdoor, and the many silhouettes of Toronto after dark. Featured on Nowness: https://ift.tt/2L5vVNC A local Toronto musician Prince Josh (of Prince Innocence) composed a song that captured a feeling he has continuously felt on a dance floor at 3am in the various hidden corners of this city where kids go to find a bit of freedom in the night. (also how we met, years ago, both DJ'ng and dancing around the city) He called it simply - The Joy, Toronto is not an easy place to throw parties and create a space where people can feel free to be themselves, so I wanted to hear a diverse group of people talking from the heart about where they find the Joy in doing all that they do, and attempt to create something that was an honest celebration of those that approach this whole world in a meaningful way. While each person had their own unique individual story and background, and a varied perspective on the subject, the shared emotional experience is what shone through and became the focus of the film. The Joy, it seems, is discovering a world of fellow misfits coming together and finding a meaningful sense of freedom, community, and belonging in a niche place I hope in this time, when gathering and dancing with friends is no longer a reality, it can act as reminder of what we all once shared, and what we all will share again. Isang Milyon

Isang Milyon

"ISANG MILYON" means one million in Filipino. I clearly dont' know how many fishes I saw but maybe more than a million ! Some shots I took during incredible dives last year. It was the first time I saw a sardine run. This is how I tried to transpose what I felt in this edit. The dynamic song really helped me to edit this insanity. I chose the black and white grading to accentuate the graphic side and the movements of the shoal. Again my friend Air Goat composed this great custom song. UNTIL THERE WAS NOTHING

UNTIL THERE WAS NOTHING

"Until There Was Nothing" ...or "How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Black Hole" Someday this will pass and there will be nothing left. The inevitable spaghettification of it all. That's not something to fear "because we come from nothing" as Alan Watts puts it... and from nothing comes something new. Similarly to a much lesser degree, this project was pieced together repurposing old and unused material from my shoots to create something new. What started out as a series of throwaway Instagram experiments turned into something a lot more climatic. Watch full screen, volume up, la-z-boy reclined. They Saw The Sun First

They Saw The Sun First

“Old people’s speech is not to be dishonoured - after all, they saw the sun first.” They Saw the Sun First is a timely film by Stefan Hunt featuring real interviews with New York’s elderly and a dreamy score by FKJ - brought to life through dance, performance and the magic of imagination, the poignant message in this film could not be more relevant in these times. Turn the volume up, turn the lights down, turn your emails off, and take in all the wisdom of our elders. Enjoy. TRENDS

TRENDS

The project started as an exploration of different techniques and visual languages inspired by the current projects in the Motion Graphics industry. Hence the name TRENDS. Slowly but surely, it outgrew the initial premise and started to take on a life of its own with more ideas and techniques, but maintaining the original underlying principle at its core. This led to a series of five short pieces, each with its own title that doesn’t take itself too seriously. https://ift.tt/2RLwEHA
