Ore Mountains, Germany

Ore Mountains, Germany

One of the upsides of this pandemic is that I got to explore and shoot some great places in Germany. I was invited to film an episode of the amazing Ore Mountains by the tourism board Erzgebirge. The area recently became a UNESCO World Heritage site among other things due to its rich cultual heritage in mining which dates back 700 years. The Ore Mountians are located in a so called Mittelgebirge, which is a relatively low mountain range or highland area, a typical geographical feature of central Europe. Enjoy this trip with steam trains passing through fairy tale landscapes, medival castles, mining villages, underground mines and much more. Thanks to Daniela Mynett and Alexander Ohly for making this episode happen. VOICE ABOVE WATER is the story of a 90-year-old Balinese fisherman who can no longer fish because of the amount of plastic pollution in the ocean, instead he collects trash in hopes of being able to fish again. The story is a glimpse into how one human is using his resources to make a difference and a reminder that if we all play our part we can accomplish something much greater than ourselves. A meditation on Freedom & Peace to support the beautiful People of Myanmar in their painful struggle towards democracy. A Few Steps From Home (Full Movie)

A Few Steps From Home (Full Movie)

This is what we found just a few steps from home. (Make sure to switch on subtitles!) A new El Flamingo ski movie with a simple idea: One long weekend, a small mountain hut, a warm stove, three friends. Even if the big cities of Munich and Innsbruck are almost in sight, wild mountain adventures can often be found right out the back door. In this film Joi Hoffmann, Jochen Mesle and Max Kroneck share the love for their local mountains and the simple life you can find in the small huts up there. „I explored a lot around my hometown Innsbruck. And I am completely surprised that we found a corner where I have never been and how much potential it simply has for skiing.“ Joi Hoffmann These days it is more important than ever to embrace the territory on your doorstep instead of dreaming of distant places. The film was shot a few days before the first Covid 19 lockdown in the alps in march 2020. After a premiere at this years virtual Banff Mountain Film Festival the film is now available online. https://ift.tt/2TpbxyA https://ift.tt/3iPyqnN CREDITS: SKIERS: Max Kroneck, Jochen Mesle, Joi Hoffmann DIRECTORS: Johannes Müller, Philipp Becker PRODUCTION COMPANY: El Flamingo PARTNER BRAND: Arcteryx SUPPORTER: Fischer Ski, Alpina Sports, Contour Skins PRODUCTION YEAR: 2020 LOCATION: Austria PHOTO: Andreas Vigl, Max Kroneck SOUNDTRACK: Glacier - Jacob Montague (Musicbed) A Few Steps From Home Soundtrack Pt. 1 - Fabian Siethoff A Few Steps From Home Soundtrack Pt. 2 - Fabian Siethoff Ready to Go (Instrumental) - Bronze Radio Return (Musicbed)

Wangechi Mutu: Between the Earth and the Sky | Art21 "Extended Play"

Wangechi Mutu: Between the Earth and the Sky | Art21 "Extended Play"

Episode #277: From her Nairobi studio, artist Wangechi Mutu considers her relationship with the natural world and the ways in which it has influenced her variegated artistic practice. A self-described "city girl with a nature brain," Mutu recounts her upbringing in Kenya, memories of playing in her family’s garden, and attending an all-girls Catholic school. These experiences instilled a profound respect for both nature and the feminine in Mutu, alongside a curiosity about the African history, heritage, and culture that was omitted from her studies. Today, Mutu’s monumental sculptures of hybrid female, animal, and plant forms assert "how incredibly important every single plant and animal and human is in keeping us all alive and afloat." Tracing her journey from Kenya to New York, first as a university student and later as an established exhibiting artist, Mutu charts the evolution of her artwork from her collage paintings, to explorations with photography and heroic sculptures made from earth and bronze. In her early collage paintings, Mutu explored the tension created by mixing cut outs from wildlife and fashion magazines with vintage illustrations and her own watercolors. As her dense and colorful collage works grew in scale, the artist began incorporating her own photography into her paintings. This combination sparked Mutu’s reflection on the wider history of photography, colonization, and how Black and female bodies have been photographed, packaged, and consumed. In her most recent works, including the "Sentinel" series (2016–present), "The NewOnes, will free Us" (2019) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and "Crocodylus" and "MamaRay" (2020) at Gladstone Gallery, Mutu draws upon her reverence for the divine feminine and her frustration with the schism between "the way we worship the image of the woman, but denigrate the actual human being." The artist’s elegant and powerful hybrid female-animal figures command viewers’ attention and regard. Unable to return to her native Kenya for many years while living and working in New York, Mutu reflects on the convergence of African and Western influences that have informed her artwork and her binational identity. Mutu now works between her Nairobi and New York studios, looking to compare, combine, and understand herself from these multiple viewpoints. This film is among a collection that comprise Art21’s participation in the multi-institutional Feminist Art Coalition initiative. Feminist Art Coalition (FAC) is a platform for art projects informed by feminisms, fostering collaborations between arts institutions that aim to make public their commitment to social justice and structural change. Wangechi Mutu was born in 1972 in Nairobi, Kenya. In her collages, drawings, sculptures, and films, Mutu centers the female body to create powerful and self-possessed figures that are hybrids of human, plant, animal, and machine forms. Sampling from a diverse array of sources—from natural materials to fashion magazines, medical diagrams, and traditional African arts—the artist creates otherworldly realms that examine cultural identity, the feminine, colonial history, and global consumption. The Faults 断层

The Faults 断层

This is the third work in the “Mountains & Rivers” series. For me, mountains are huge creatures on a scale of billions of years, and with this work I want to present a fast-forward look at the changes in these mountains, not only in the form of growth, but also in the form of fractures and destruction. These movements are driven by different noise algorithms. Also this work is an exploration of how to achieve the rougher yet expressive brushstrokes, blooming and “Cun” - the brushstrokes used in traditional Chinese landscape painting to express the texture of mountains and rocks - through the renderer. Rendered in Octane Render.

Centuries and Still

Centuries and Still

"Centuries and Still" is this week's Staff Pick Premiere! Read more about it, including a Q&A with director Sally Tran, here: https://ift.tt/3B5vJGC “Centuries and Still” is a mixed media illustrated short film telling the history of anti-Asian racism and violence in the U.S. The film seeks to unveil how history took part in the birth and perpetuation of today’s surge of anti-Asian discrimination and hate crimes. The search for justice goes back to the Gold Rush era fetishization of Asian women, to today’s hate crimes targeting Asian elders. The film was inspired by Vietnamese director Sally Tran’s same-style film "60 Years and Still" which portrays the history of racism and police brutality against Black people in America over six decades. Through this short film, Sally Tran hopes to continue “education in action” through a unique hybrid of documentary and miniature-looking history, and shooting on multiple formats including 16mm and Super 8 film, and VHS and digital format to match the era. The archival audio and voice overs anchor the audience in the reality of the past and the present. The film was directed by Sally Tran and an awesome group of API creatives such as cinematographer Isabella Tan whose work include Lola (2018) and Souvenirs (2020), and illustrator Nhung Le whose work has been featured on The New York Times and The New Yorker Magazine. By coming together in this project, the team wants to celebrate our universal community through telling our story of the Asian diaspora in America, while directing support to AAPI-led organizations fighting for social justice.

David, 75, Peggy, 73, Ted, 71, and 69-year-old Adele reflect on their memories of coming out, the remarkable change they’ve witnessed in their lifetimes. The North Face Presents: FACETS

The North Face Presents: FACETS

Each of us are part of a greater whole, a community that grows stronger together especially when it’s open to all. Leanne Pelosi, Jess Kimura, Marion Haerty, Mary Rand, and Amanda Hankison show us just that. A unique look at these inspiring athletes that make up one hell of a portfolio. This one is for the next generation of riders carving their own paths.

Trevor Kennison - Day 1

Trevor Kennison - Day 1

January 4th, 2020 was the first day that Trevor Kennison ventured into the backcountry as an adaptive athlete. A snowboarding accident at Vail Pass, CO just over five years prior had taken away the use of his legs, leaving him with an entirely new set of challenges and a newfound perspective on life. Filmmaker Josh Berman had connected with Trevor months before, and the two were beginning production for a documentary film that would tell Trevor’s story. January 4th was also the first day that Josh and Trevor shot together for their project. “For me, the goal of that first day was to answer some logistical questions,” Josh explains. “How exactly would we move Trevor and his gear around, how comfortable would Trevor be in the backcountry, and most importantly, what extra safety protocols would we need to put in place. I brought a camera and started capturing everything, but there were zero expectations that much would come from it.” “I’ve since learned that every time you shoot something with Trevor some sort of magic is bound to happen, and by the end of that day I knew we had something special.” The resulting short, aptly titled “Day 1” has since screened at dozens of prestigious film festivals around the globe and taken home a few awards in the process. Trevor and Josh’s feature documentary film “Full Circle” is slated for release Fall of 2022, telling Trevor’s story and much, much more. But finally, I was sitting on my desk again for weeks and weeks, tweaking shots, mixing paint and staring at a wet piece of paper. All scenes were created with water colors, ink and acrylic paint. Propelled by a triumphant orchestral score it takes us into the depths of weirdness where birth and death meet in an endless cycle of rainbows, blood and breast-milk." LIAF Jury (Sophie Koko-Gate, Chris Shepherd, Max Hattler) "Exceptionally surprising and darkly funny, this animated curiosity loops and warps a message of monochromatic destruction and rainbow creation into a warning about nature - our own and Earth's. In an orchestral explosion of collapse and colour, this hypnotic trip shows life and death as a queer, surreal and grotesque pattern of regeneration and degeneration that affects both land and body."
