Drawing Life

Drawing Life

In “Drawing Life,” directed by Nathan Fitch, the New Yorker’s George Booth looks back on fifty years of work — including the only cartoon to be published in the issue following 9/11.

The Tell-Tale Heart (2008) • Robert Eggers

The Tell-Tale Heart (2008) • Robert Eggers

“I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.” - Edgar Allan Poe Only one Servant remains in the ruins of an old house. He is valet, butler, footman, cook and sick-nurse. The master of the house is a cadaverous invalid whose every function is aided by the earnest, young manservant. He meticulously repeats his duties within the silence of the moldering chambers - his only company is the vacant stare of the Old Man's blind eye. Time rots away. Tormented by constant silence and the banality of his duties, the Servant’s fears gradually turn to violent obsession. With tangibly detailed period design and hauntingly lifelike puppetry, THE TELL-TALE HEART unearths the decaying dreamworld of Poe. Director/ designer Robert Eggers centers the classic tale on the unnerving relationship between Servant and Master. With lyrical movement and a striking performance by Carrington Vilmont, the film quickly lures its viewer into its claustrophobic confines. Statement from director Robert Eggers: “I am pleased to share The Tell-Tale Heart. It is an uneven film, but my first film that I was proud of making. It is also my first collaboration with my DP Jarin Blaschke and editor Lousie Ford, and we have worked together ever since, so it is an important film for all three of us. It is also my first collaboration with sound designer Damian Volpe. Originally, I wanted an incredibly frail actor, on death's door, to play The Old Man, and realised the shooting conditions would not be able to accommodate that fragility (We shot the film in an abandoned 19th century house in New Hampshire, in February. It was filthy and cold – to put it mildly). I said to myself, "I'd rather have a doll play The Old Man than a slightly younger actor in makeup." That stuck. This idea of an unliving doll or puppet as the antagonist was a strange choice, but for better or worse, one that certainly makes the film unique. I am also particularly proud of the performance by Carrinton Vilmont. I hope that audiences take note of him.”

Titan

Titan

'Titan' is spaceart work representing the seas of the moon Titan. The idea originally came from the observation of peculiar chemical/physical phenomena at high magnification. It was also influenced by the reading of Kurt Vonnegut's novel, 'The Sirens of Titan. The result is a dreamlike scenario which interpretation vacillates between a cosmic and a biological point of view, until it evolves into a symbolic birth that also recalls the OM. Velocity

Velocity

Velocity is my third experimental short macro film. “A colourful journey though uncharted cosmos” was the slogan and driving force behind this new short film. Idea of creating this film came from observed similarity between glittery ink and cosmos. During the last two films I couldn’t shake the feeling that sparkling glitter with dark ink backgrounds on one hand and colourful pigments on the other reminded me of a distant galaxies, galactic clouds, nebulas and other cosmic bodies. Vast space of the universe, close ups of “fast moving” near galactic bodies as well as explosions of stars, - all that I’ve tried to portray in a new experimental film. Instead of facing camera at -90º angle and creating edge-to-edge sharp images, this time I decided to tilt the camera slightly and so, in combination with awesome Irix 150mm f2.8 macro lens, at widest aperture, I was able achieved a shallow depth of field to the image. I my mind this somehow conveyed the feeling that you are shooting objects at great distances or super close to you, like it would be if you shot in space. The big role in this project played by an amazing set designer Luidmila Tregub, who spent countless hours creating right mixture of the different inks, alcohol, soaps etc, which not only looked amazing, but also provided correct motion of the substance. This film would never be possible without her. As in previous two films, she’d used pigments, different inks, alcohol, soaps, and other mixtures for creating liquid art of flow and movements. I used Canon EOS R5, shooting 8K RAW, which allowed me to have more creative freedom to color correct and grade the final film. A new manual macro 150mm lens f/2.8 from Irix I’ve used on this project allowed me to shoot awesome bokeh and sharp center. Davince resolve 17 has been used to edit and post-process this short film and the After Effect - for some minor fixes and creating titles and credits. Ostrich Theory (2020)

Ostrich Theory (2020)

Something is coming. Nobody cares. A pre-pandemic harbinger of indifference to troubled times, digitally depopulating and re-orchestrating documentary footage frame-by-frame before lockdowns became reality. Busy scenes shot in early 2017 were meticulously rotoscoped over a three-year period, often involving recreation/reanimation of figures on a limb-by-limb, joint-by-joint basis, using available elements from other frames. There are no visual effects besides the rearrangement of genuinely-captured assets. www.simonellisfilms.com Screenings: Vienna Shorts / Austria (2021) Kurzfilm Festiival Hamburg / Germany (2021) Dresden Filmfest / Germany (2021) Dokufest / Prizren, Kosovo (2021) Guanajuato International Film Festival / Mexico (2021) Split Film Festival / Croatia (2021) IndieCork Film Festival / Ireland (2021) Message To Man / Russia (2021) Sapporo International Short Film Festival / Japan (2021) PÖFF Shorts (Black Nights Film Festival) / Tallinn, Estonia (2021) Minimalen Short Film Festival / Trondheim, Norway (2022) Stuttgarter Filmwinter / Germany (2022) London Short Film Festival / UK (2022) British Shorts Kurfilmfestival / Berlin, Germany (2022) Internationale Kurzfilmwoche Regensburg / Germany (2022)

Max Cooper - Everything (Official Video by Nick Cobby)

Max Cooper - Everything (Official Video by Nick Cobby)

Music: Everything - Max Cooper Video: Nick Cobby Additional footage: Andrey Prokhorov Additional footage: Pedro Salas MAX COOPER announces new album Unspoken Words, released 25th March on Mesh - with the lead single from the project "Everything" and its accompanying video. "Everything" is an excitable expression of freedom and joy, an explosion of colour referencing classic synth sounds from Max Cooper’s formative years and the golden era of idealism in music and popular culture of the '80 and '90s. “I love feeling that anything is possible. It feels like I’m bursting and need to find some expression," says Cooper. "The synths seemed to carry the hope of everything I could imagine, condensed into the simple chord progression, improvised pads and layers of distortion. It was a lot of fun to work with, and spending time in that creative mindset generated lots of ideas which could be shot down later under less manic conditions.” As an audio-visual artist, Cooper often goes to the medium of video to enhance his music and the ideas and stories which inspire and inform his work. "Everything" is one of 13 short films combined into Unspoken Words and the metanarrative which will be released as a film on Blu-ray to accompany the album on 25th March. Cooper developed the visual story for ‘Everything’ with long term collaborator Nick Cobby and photographer Andrey Prokhorov, who has a huge library of imagery from around the world. www.maxcooper.net / www.meshmeshmesh.net Max Cooper, talking about the direction of 'Everything': "This chapter of the Unspoken Words story is about our capacity for positive change via idealism. The video project shows footage of everything, contained inside us. We are aware of an outside world, but ultimately; everything is experienced internally, and much of what may seem hopelessly out of our control need not be so. That’s the idealistic idea which I applied personally, musically and visually. I started the music when I was in need of something to give me a push forward. Sometimes a high energy classic synth explosion is the recipe for the job. It created the feeling that anything seemed possible, a fresh belief with a touch of ignorance that’s essential for new ideas to emerge free from the constraining baggage of old failures. The synths seemed to carry the hope of everything I could imagine, condensed into the simple chord progression, improvised pads and layers of distortion. It was a lot of fun to work with, and spending time in that creative mindset generated lots of ideas. For the visual story I worked with my long term collaborator Nick Cobby, along with the photographer Andrey Prokhorov. Andrey has a huge library of imagery from around the world and I wanted to try and put everything inside the minds and bodies of the people of Mexico City, where Nick is based, in order to mirror the explosion of feelings and ideas of the music in visual form. It tells the story of our escape from constraints as we move towards the final mental expansion of the narrative. Culum Simpson designed the spatial structure of the Dolby Atmos mix in a similar manner to that of the original stereo mix, with full power immersion from all sides, and an ever growing barrage of sound from the ceiling and walls."

P'tit Belliveau RRSP [Music Video]

P'tit Belliveau RRSP [Music Video]

Music video for P’tit Belliveau, a multi-instrumentalist songwriter from Baie Sainte-Marie, a very small francophone community in Nova Scotia. This video tells the story of a lonely lamp maker and a genie without magic powers, whose mutual destinies will change forever from the unexpected encounter between the two. Integrating surreal and magical elements into a mundane and rural universe, characterized by an everyday life routine, the result of this music video is unique yet astonishing. To achieve this particular aesthetic, we used the Oculus Quest’s SculptrVR application in the conception of the video. Every single movement of the characters has been translated from a MOCAP shooting. story & creative direction: Vincent Bilodeau art direction & 3D animation: David Baril design: David Baril, Pascal Brousseau, Charles Desmarais, Maxime Normand, Frank Appache, Morgan Ali editing: Vincent Bilodeau production: Colegram actors: Philippe Boutin, David Baril thanks to: Sophie Montmagny, OG, Studio Le Château

Surfers Not Street Children

Surfers Not Street Children

Surfers Not Street Children is a charity that uses surfing to intervene in the lives of children living on the street in South Africa and Mozambique. Stance had the idea to give the team an experience that would not only last them a lifetime but also inspire thousands of street children back home to turn from street life to surf life. So I met the guys in Edinburgh and set off to document the journey through the Scottish highlands and up to a promising looking surf forecast in Thurso. From drinking Iron Bru, witnessing snow, feeding wild stags, learning about Shinty and tucking into pumping Scottish barrels, there were many firsts on the trip and was a a real pleasure to experience these with the crew along the way.
