But one of them suggested he start doing increasingly violent things. Nothing was as it seemed. And Khalil's life would never be the same. A documentary by Garret Harkawik for the Gravel Institute.

"The ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity" For too long, surfing has been the preserve of the privileged. Those fortunate enough to reside on coastal regions. Those fortunate enough to afford boards and wetsuits. To be fortunate enough to have the surrounding infrastructure to train, to have others go before them. To be lucky enough to live in Southern California. In South West France. In Sydney. To be able to surf all day and not worry about providing for a family. To be home schooled and only focus on ‘pro’ surfing. Barriers to entry that those fortunate to do it wouldn’t even recognise existed; the statement “all you need is a board and a wetsuit” reflecting so acutely the nonchalance of the privileged few.  And yet, we hope those days are behind us. With the amazing work of groups such as Postive Vibe Warriors, Black Girls Surf and Juju surf club to name but a handful. Barriers are being broken down and we hope, with fingers crossed and a collective goodwill in the right direction that not only are the barriers being lowered, but tossed aside as surfing provides a means of empowerment to those less fortunate.  This movement is being lead by examples and role models the world over. Perfectly crystallised with the Billabong stablemates of Italo Ferreira, Cherif Fall and Joshe Faulkner. A far cry from your cookie cutter pro surfers, three real people with three real stories, role models and examples in their own right from their own communities right up to the world stage.  We’d been to Senegal before. The friendliest place we’d ever visited. The nation state of fun waves and all time vibes. So when Billabong called the WT hotline, and rumour reached our ears of a return trip, it wasn’t a though process worth considering—before even asking why we were in. When the why came, on a surprise trip with the World Champ, gold medallist and all round now über superstar Italo Ferreira to visit our old friend Cherif along with Joshe Faulkner—we were in, hook line and sinker. Two weeks later, we land in Dakar, fresh PCR tests in hand. Shot on 16mm Kodak using a homemade Time-Slice device, after Tim Macmillan Victor Van Rossem - Concept, realisation & editing Tina Schott - Art direction Thanks to Yvon Poncelet for the flash and technical advice Shot at De Centrale, Ghent The history: Back in the early eighties, Tim Macmillan started developing his ‘Time-Slice’ device: a big, wooden, circular construction filled with homemade cameras that all took photos at the same time from different viewpoints, thus ‘freezing’ time inside the circle. With this he lay the foundation for The Matrix’ Bullet-Time and many other manifestations of this same basic technique. Surprisingly, there is not much to find about this original Time-Slice camera. One short Youtube video is pretty much all that remains. When I first saw that video, I was triggered. A variation on this technique we had all seen in The Matrix, but these images had something extra: a rawness, a sincerity. Much of this I think has to do with the fact that it is all handmade and analog, shot on 16mm film. After a while I forgot about the video again for a few years until I was approached by Black Flower to make a music video for their song ‘Morning In The Jungle’. The flow of the song evoked a feeling of circular motion, and suddenly I remembered Tim Macmillan. It was the ideal moment to see if I could recreate the device from nothing. The whole project took a little over 6 months, start to finish - there were lots of mistakes and problems along the way, but in the end we made it. The final rig consisted of a wooden base construction to form the circle, a paper leader inside rubber casing to make everything lightproof, and 86 little cameras that were 3D-printed and fitted with small 13mm convex lenses. The 16mm Kodak film could be loaded in and taken through the whole thing with a fragile winding system. Since there is no shutter system on the cameras, everything had to be done in complete darkness, the photos themselves taken with a flash.

Groggy, you wake up in a hospital bed. The doctor walks in and says that you had a seizure. Then he breaks even worse news: cancer. Brain cancer. The really bad kind. Less than two years to live. That’s what happened to DJ Stewart in May of 2019. Skateboarder, business owner, husband, friend, family man, and overall life enthusiast, DJ was living the dream with a lot of life ahead of him. I always try to just be myself. Sometimes I make songs and albums of spilled guts deep reaching ideas and send them out to all the strangers in the world, but mostly I've tried to keep the real daily life private. I've wanted to share the meat and hide the skin. Now I find myself surprised to be revealing a beautifully filmed portrait version of this home life; the simple routines with my young daughter, the meandering ideas that burble out unformed. Our lived moments aren't the art project, but a picture of our little world with its everyday light and shadows, the place where we actually live.
