A choreographer looking to get back into the dance world, Alana uses her time of solitude to practice her moves and prepare for a new adventure involving an experimental dance company. Then on a walk in the woods with Bowen, they discover the decomposing remains of what is dubiously identified as a bat. It is not a bat. "Latched" is this week's Staff Pick Premiere! Monsoon V (4K)

Monsoon V (4K)

BluRay discs (new combo BluRay of Monsoon I-V) available here: https://ift.tt/1NmxOlE Follow me: http://twitter.com/mikeolbinski / http://facebook.com/mikeolbinskiphotography / http://instagram.com/mikeolbinski Music: Avalon and Legend by Ryan Taubert (through TheMusicbed.com, sign-up for licensing here:https://ift.tt/2xOgKSE) ------------------------ My original plan this past summer was to collect as much footage as normal, but to not put out a "Monsoon V" until 2019 when I had two years worth of crazy haboobs and lightning to make it truly spectacular. But the monsoon had different plans and put on a pretty dang good show in 2018, starting off with a decent dust storm on July 5th, then the best haboob chase I've ever had on July 9th, an epic green hail core on July 11th and finally another fantastic dust storm day on August 2nd. Sprinkled in there...more dust storm, some at night, spectacular lightning, and tons of microbursts and stormy clouds, plus a few rotating supercells to put some icing on the cake. It was one of the best monsoon seasons I've chased, so I couldn't help but get to work on Monsoon V a few weeks ago. I love doing these films so much. So much hard work for months on end goes into capturing them. Almost 15,000 miles this summer across Arizona. 85,000+ frames with plenty more deleted. A total of 32 days out there chasing over three months. Sleep deprivation, tons of gas money, crappy food and yes, sometimes missing storms I wish I had been on. But the highs were amazing. Chasing with my kiddos...sharing the July 9th haboob bonanza with Lyla and Eli...or an all-night chase with my youngest, Asher. They were so awesome to have along. Two workshops with five fantastic people. Both were so fun and the storms we saw were just wonderful.  I feel so blessed to teach people and show the monsoon off to those who have never seen it before. Big, huge thanks to my buddy Jay Worsley for helping mix the songs on this film to extend them a bit and even blend two songs together. You're a life-saver my friend and your skills are unmatched! As always is the case...this year, including tornado season, I chased the most I ever have. Which means more time away from home. And Jina...my incredible wife...she's so supportive of my passion and this business. Taking care of the kids and running everything at home during those months...I am forever amazed at how she always has my back, even during the times when it's too hard and she'd rather not. I can't thank her enough for allowing me to chase my dreams. I do want to thank all of you watching this...over the years, so many people have seen the films, left kind words, purchased DVDs, prints and even books. I don't know how many people asked me this year about when Monsoon V was coming out, and I have to say...it was extremely motivating. So thank you for the support and kind words of encouragement and excitement about these storm movies...I can honestly say you are a huge reason why I keep making them! Technical Details: Everything shot with two Canon 5DSRs and various Canon lenses. Might be a couple lightning sequences with the Sony A7R3 Processed in Lightroom, LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

A human to bird interface becomes a source of happiness for no reason. Music by TŌTH Alex Toth https://ift.tt/2RjMKp2 2018 NPR: https://ift.tt/2JiUxAt Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3bI_d80oCw Lil' statement: The track had me thinking about parades and love-pining by way of anticipation of the huge musical explosions. I was drawn to the enticing slowness of the song, and it made me think of the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa, Cab Calloway's dancing, and some of the moods in Marcel Dzama's drawings. I decided on featuring birds as an innocent threat from the beginning, paired with a character who seems suspicious of them and unsure about their desires. I liked that the human to bird interface could become a source of happiness for no reason.

Everything changed for Cornelius Walker on 27 November 2000 when Damilola Taylor was killed. Damilola was 11, the same age as Cornelius. He lived five minutes away. He had the same skin colour. Cornelius’s mother, scared for her son’s safety, moved their family out of London. Cornelius suddenly found himself living on a white estate run by racists. But rather than fight them, Cornelius decided to become more like the people who hated him. They became his family and kept him safe. And in return, Cornelius became submerged in a culture of violence and hatred. But as the violence and racism against other black people continued, Cornelius struggled to marry his real identity with the one he had acquired.

How to Talk to Your Kids About Race

How to Talk to Your Kids About Race

“The worst conversation adults can have with kids about race is no conversation at all,” says author Jemar Tisby. “Talking to kids about race needs to happen early, often, and honestly.” In a new episode of Home School, The Atlantic’s animated series about parenting, Tisby offers advice on how to have a conversation with children about race, from experiential learning to watching classic animated films.

MAX COOPER - PLATONIC

MAX COOPER - PLATONIC

Listen to the new album 'One Hundred Billion Sparks': https://ift.tt/2OM0eZC https://ift.tt/2NmbfPU https://maxcooper.net/ Max Cooper Things got pretty mad on this one after I set the task of trying to visualise the Platonic realm of form underlying reality. And Páraic Mc Gloughlin has come up with something of a masterpiece I think, using a single day-long shot, whose time-based processing is linked to the more than 100 layers of audio I used to create the music…it’s fairly intense on the audio and visual as a result, but all so precisely carried out by Páraic. A huge amount of work has gone into this on all fronts, I hope you enjoy it. This all links into my new album project, ‘One Hundred Billion Sparks’, about our hundred billion firing neurons which create who we are, all we know and experience (https://ift.tt/2NmbfPU). As a sub-topic for one of the music/video projects, I’ve always found it fascinating how mathematicians and scientists talk about “discovering” laws of nature, never “creating” them, even when they’re working in entirely abstract realms with little or no link to the real world. The laws and structure are usually assumed to exist independently of us in a sense very much linked to Plato’s ancient idea of the realm of ideals, with only our minds giving us access to this realm. I came across this idea delivered in stark form in the case of the “amplituhedron”, an entity whose structure encodes fundamental particle interactions, and whose creators claim it to yield space and time in an emergent manner, so that it can’t possibly exist out there in the real world that we’re familiar with. If it does exist, it is outside of time and space, whatever that means! All this might sound like I’m falling off the cliff a little in terms of anything to do with making music videos, but, as I often find to be the case with this sort of investigation of nature, it’s rich with beautiful visual forms and many ideas which are ripe for musical representation on emotive and structural grounds. The general musical theme to attempt was that of a world of all (or at least as many as I could cram in) precise structures, with particular attention to the jagged complex form of the amplituhedron. Páraic also employed the same approach visually. It demanded a barrage of exact forms. Musically this was a lot of fun, and very much in fitting with what I like to attempt anyway, just requiring a greater devotion of time and more attention to detail than my norm. Most of the 100-120 layers of different sounds were synthesised, each layer comprising a specific aesthetic musically, but with little repetition, so that I could have something like a world of independent forms, related, but each its own distinct entity, all mixed together to push the overall complexity in line with the concept. This included many layers of synth processing - I tried to take each part and force it into new, but related forms. I enforced strict quantisation, trying to keep everything rhythmically stuck to grid, to give that feeling of sharpness and precision despite the mess of many layers. Páraic Mc Gloughlin The idea for the Platonic video came from the thought of just how much is going on in one single day. In the brief, Max wrote "Underneath all of this mess however, it needed a simple core, the constant chord progression." So I thought it was fitting to have a simple core running through the entire video and it being made from one location shot over the space of one day, keeping up with the music’s "messy" energy as the track developed. Aesthetically I love the mix of abstraction and realism and this was a great place for me to explore this. Using a fundamental image (a time lapse) to mask and cut into, I tried to show the variable possibilities within a limited time span, maintaining the integrity of each individual photograph while dissecting and rearranging the overall image. In order to get as close a relationship from audio to visual as possible I tried to allocate a certain time of day or shape to each individual sound in the track , experimenting with animated sequences using platonic shapes, and referencing images based on the amplituhedron, later using mats and directly masking over many layers of photographs. I tried to incorporate and inject a feeling of possibility, the unknown, hidden truths, and what might be. I wanted the main focus of the video to be on time and space but I also I wanted to have an underlying human element. Choosing a motorway with two way traffic fit nicely, and didn't over populate the scene. Nineteen hours sitting on a bridge in Sligo town, and a good stint behind the computer and we're done.

New York's empty storefronts are a dark omen for the future of cities.

Hands

Hands

My hand exploration animations turned into a full edit, the incredible Mount Audio helped out with the music. The focus lay in key-frame animation to mimic the intricate movements of a hand, and with texturing to capture a realistic look of the skin. Adding a layer of simulation I experimented with various substances to create moments of curiosity and playfulness. Sound and Music: Mount Audio

KARO • Karolina Kuras • National Ballet Photographer

Karolina Kuras is a Toronto-based ballet and portrait photographer. In this piece, we explore her creative collaboration with Canadian National Ballet dancer/choreographer Brent Parolin and Tanya Howard, as well as make-up artist Ashley Readings. We wanted to encapsulate the essence rather than the information. There are many pieces where Karolina is featured as a photographer discussing her work, but we wanted to get underneath the surface, into the intangible matters that drive and inspire her to create and collaborate so intimately. This project was captured on 35mm film, with a small crew in Karolina’s home studio. Summers End

Summers End

Since the 1980's, the glacier on Mt. Hood during the summer months has been a meeting place for snowboarders from all over the world. Growing up watching snowboard movies, most were shot on 16mm film & it was common to see footage from Mt. Hood in the summer time. Fast forward 30 years and the content coming out of Mt. Hood floods the internet due to the digital era. So being inspired by the older films and the recent rise of 16mm seen throughout the industry today, we hope to bring you a little bit of the past, into the future. Visual trend lab foam Studio embarked on an prolific exploration of trend visuals with BASF’s Coating Division. Their Automotive Color Design team invited foam to conceptualize and design their latest release of their global design tool kit, which is an authoritative trend book on automotive paints for the next years. foam’s task was to interpret the diverse findings of the group, and consolidate the complex social, technological and aesthetic trends and translate them into formal narratives. The result is an unseen formal language, with autonomous shapes and unfamiliar materials celebrated in a playful ménage of bold hyperrealism and poetic abstraction. Earthrise

Earthrise

Earthrise tells the story of the first image captured of the Earth from space in 1968. Told through the voices of the Apollo 8 astronauts themselves, the film recounts their experiences and memories and explores the beauty, awe, and grandeur of the Earth against the blackness of space. This iconic image had a powerful impact on the astronauts and the world, offering a perspective that transcended national, political, and religious boundaries. Fifty years later, Earthrise compels us to remember this shift and to reflect on the Earth as a shared home. Read the story here: https://nyti.ms/2IBZ0hG Directed by Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee

Student Union / Gólyatábor (2016)

Student Union / Gólyatábor (2016)

a short film by György Mór Kárpáti official selection @ Slamdance 2017 best short film prize @ Zagreb Film Festival The return journey on a train from a freshman summer camp, where 18-year-old Dora has just been sexually abused. Now the president of the students’ union wants to talk with her. In Hungary, the students’ union of each university organises a summer camp for their freshman students just before the beginning of their first semester. Many cases of sexual violence having taken place in these camps have recently come to light, as well as the fact that they were systematically covered up by the unions. Our film is inspired by these true events. The behaviour of the leaders of the students’ unions correlates with contemporary Hungarian politics – and these kids are the next generation of politicians.

REI Presents: Sky Migrations

REI Presents: Sky Migrations

Each fall our skies fill with the wings of migrating raptors. This ancient migration spans two hemispheres, binding our backyards to the forests of the far north and the wildest corners of South America. A network of volunteers and biologists stand ready to document each pulse of the migration by collecting data that may arm us with the means to better understand the health and wellbeing of these wayward fliers and the landscapes that sustain them. Sky Migrations is a film about a journey that embeds us in this epic migration for a brief moment, telling the stories of those who, with eyes cast skyward, tuck themselves atop mountains to help ensure that October skies may continue to flood with raptors, and that wilderness itself lives on.
