From Timber To Tide
A new film in our maker series. Ben Harris is a traditional wooden boat builder based in Cornwall, UK. This film documents Ben Harris’ love of wood work and boat building, how he acquired his skills, and how incredible it is to be able to take something that you’ve built with your own hands out onto the water and sail it across the sea. Who is Ben Harris? Ben has always loved wood. His mother said that his first word was ‘log’. He has been working with wood throughout the UK since the age of 15. First as an assistant to a cabinet maker, where he started by sharpening the tools and clearing up. He then developed his skills in furniture making and his passion for wood and forestry by working in broadleaf woodlands. Later he tuned his skills in bespoke oak-framed carpentry and went on to establish a sawmill and oak framing business in Scotland, sourcing timber from the local estates. In 2005 Ben moved to Cornwall to study boatbuilding. He has been building boats and sailing them ever since. Shooting from timber to tide We spent three days with Ben, staying with him in the idyllic handbuilt wooden cabin he lives in, in Constantine, Cornwall. When we arrived Wednesday, late afternoon, the plan was to make pumpkin soup and couldn’t believe our luck when we discovered the open fire cooking area in the garden. Within an hour after arriving we were already shooting some lovely material. The next day we covered the area around the house, the two workshops, the woods and recorded the voice-over. The real treat came on Friday morning when we took his self-built sailing yacht Alva out on Falmouth’s waters. First we covered the beautiful yacht from a motor boat with skipper Matthew Dale and dog Ruben, before we stepped on board ourselves and got close to the action. What a great experience. What happens when four like-minded adventurers head into one of the world’s wildest mountain ranges with nothing but their mountain bikes and enough food to survive for 10 days? The answer? What doesn’t happen? Terrifying lightning storms. Raging-river crossings. Snow-covered glacial pass traverses. Mind-melting descents. Constant fights with vicious dogs. Tense encounters with over-zealous border-patrol guards. All of the above were just another day following “The Trail to Kazbegi,” a self-supported mountain-bike mission through the highest reaches of the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Our four-man team—adventure filmmaker Joey Schusler, Bike magazine editor Brice Minnigh, photographer Ross Measures and mountain man Sam Seward—spent half of June 2015 exploring the crown jewels of the Georgian High Caucasus on a feature assignment for Bike. Along the way our crew overcame countless obstacles and experienced some of the most spectacular scenery and trails they had ever encountered. The nine virtual sculptures underlying vitreous resulted from experimental setups by Robert Seidel for generating three-dimensional clusters of fibrous refractions, as well as the gravitational lensing of different volumetric and chromatic densities. Singular elements gravitate towards each other, accumulating in a gigantic sculptural system, where each entity exists with its own visual axis and vanishing point. The impalpable luminous formations create prismatic interactions between the ridges and plateaux of the main colours floating in front of the infinite violet background. The multilayered, continuously expanding and decaying system is driven by semi-chaotic processes with localized impulses and their speculative chain reactions. In the spectrum of these possible movements, each singular sculpture becomes an integral component of the whole pictorial force-field. In its asymmetrical orchestration and multitude of spatial-temporal interactions, the abstract-organic images are close in appearance to the concepts of “moving paintings” and “living sculptures” Seidel develops for more than a decade now. Originally vitreous was conceived as a media façade artwork of 80 × 24 × 14 Meters (Target City Lights, Minneapolis, USA, 2012). It later developed in a large-scale projection of 4 × 14 Meters (German Filmmuseum, Frankfurt, Germany, 2015). The short film released in December 2015 features a music score exclusively composed by Nikolai von Sallwitz.

Citing the versatility of SAVEMONEY's sound and the breadth of their projects, the documentary's director Aaron Brown says that, "It was cool to see what [Mensa and the SAVEMONEY guys] were doing, because they were doing something that has a lot more dimension." Brown spent time with Vic in the studio, where there was work to be done and fun to be had; followed him through the streets of Hyde Park, where he recalls seeing the body of a slain classmate as a teenager and where he is now stopped by admirers on the street; and he filmed him freestyling on a subway platform. "I had the idea of trying to explore the genre of documentary, just trying to pick the pieces apart of a rapper," Brown says of the dramatic subway station session. "I was thinking of an acapella verse as a voiceover in a documentary, that's what it was. Just trying to freshen it up. We've all seen a bunch of rap videos and a bunch of documentaries, so it was asking, how can we think about them as one thing." In 2015, these officer-involved shootings were more likely in Kern County, California, than anywhere in the United States. Meet the families there grieving, calling for justice. They protest split-second decisions made by officers and deputies who feel constantly threatened in a county that overwhelmingly supports law and order by any means.

In this video, Sevdaliza has fallen victim to her own creation of a safe vacuum. Submissive to deep-rooted emotions and assumptions, Sevdaliza finds herself imprisoned in her own paintings and sculptures. Can she remain unflawed? She has become nothing more than a statue surrounded by surreal environments. Identity becomes a game, however she remains in control of the computed bodies. She breaks the stereotypes of gender roles and constructs to manifest a different notion of cyborgian identity. Sevdaliza’s husky vocals float over a mechanical bed that excites masculine energy and sexual adrenaline. As the song continues, a rhythmic tension builds slowly into a chaotic climax. They are organisms and germs, friendly and timid little creatures that help each other. Oneday, however, a mysterious intruder appears and ruthlessly destroys their peaceful coexistence. The story was inspired by students’ reflections on pressing issues, such as the subject of food safety. Through the example of the destroyed life structures of the creatures in the film, “Greedy Germ” wants to illustrate that obtaining power is always linked to having a direct effect on society. Abusing power as well as blindly following orders will inevitably lead to injustice. The film aims to point out the significance of the actions of each individual and thus the responsibility they have for the next generation. A Taller Us, Foxtrott's debut album is a musical interpretation of life's monolithic challenges. Together we elaborated on that metaphor for the "Shaky Hands" video. Alongside VFX artist Martha Aguilar we created a vertical climb through various stages of inner turmoil that climaxes into a classic tale of "survival of the fittest".
