Salween Spring

Salween Spring

An American outfitter in China and the Tao of fighting a losing battle. Meet Travis Winn, an American who traveled to China for the first time 15 years ago to join his dad on a first descent of the Headwaters of the Salween River in Tibet. On that first trip Travis realized that most Chinese citizens had no way to get out and experience free-flowing rivers. And later he learned that at the rate these rivers were being dammed, very few people would ever have a chance to see the rivers in their pristine and natural state. Risking his mental and physical health, Travis continues to strive toward his personal goal to bring the Chinese people closer to their rivers. The Case Of The Three Sided Dream

The Case Of The Three Sided Dream

http://ift.tt/1N8bNIx Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a one of a kind musician, personality, satirist and windmill-slayer who despite being blind, becoming paralyzed, and facing America’s racial injustices – did not relent. His life’s work was exploring sound and making music. Beyond that, he was an outspoken activist who started a political movement to get more exposure for Jazz in America – particularly on TV. Dreams were important to Rahsaan. They planted the seed in his mind to play three horns simultaneously. His name came from dreams. When asked about his religious beliefs, he would say: “I’m from the Religion of Dreams”. At the age of 40, Rahsaan suffered a stroke which left him half paralyzed. Despite this, he continued to tour and play music, with the use of only one hand, literally until the day he died. Festivals: SXSW 2014 Full Frame Film Festival 2014 IDFA 2014

Against Empathy

Against Empathy

Paul Bloom, psychologist and Yale professor, argues that empathy is a bad thing—that it makes the world worse. While we've been taught that putting yourself in another's shoes cultivates compassion, it actually blinds you to the long-term consequences of your actions. In this animated interview from The Atlantic, we hear Bloom’s case for why the world needs to ditch empathy.

Jim: The James Foley Story

Jim: The James Foley Story

http://ift.tt/1rDlUvu Winner of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award. In August 2014, the video execution of American conflict journalist James Foley by the militant group ISIS challenged the world to deal with a new face of terror. But 40-year-old Foley was more than just the victim of this brutal killing. Seen through the lens of filmmaker Brian Oakes, Foley’s childhood friend, JIM: The James Foley Story takes viewers from small-town New England to the adrenaline-fueled front lines of Libya and Syria, where Foley pushed the limits of danger to report on the plight of civilians impacted by war. The film culminates in Foley’s 2012 capture by ISIS and the confusion and emotional upheaval that followed, ending in his tragic death nearly two years later. Foley’s family, friends, and colleagues help tell Jim’s story, while his fellow hostages reveal the details of captivity with chilling immediacy. Gut-wrenching and powerful, with unparalleled access, JIMis a harrowing chronicle of bravery, compassion, and pain at the dawn of America’s war with ISIS.

This film tells a more personal story of an oft idolized character to remind that even those who have achieved it all still face many of the struggles that everyone else does. It also celebrates how a man’s love for the wilderness has helped to further curiosity, respect and protection for the natural world around us.

Hala

Hala

A Muslim American teenager struggles to reconcile desire with family obligations. Hala is a proof-of-concept for a feature-length film that explores coming-of-age as a Muslim American. From Yasmeen Gharnit's review of Hala on NYLON.com: "The new short film, written and directed by Minhal Baig, follows a 16-year-old Muslim teenager Hala (Tess Granfield) as she attempts to explore her sexuality and identity while growing up in a conservative, religious household. The film starkly opens as we see Hala masturbate, only to be interrupted by her mother asking why she missed suhoor, a pre-dawn meal eaten while fasting during Ramadan. Then, while skateboarding at a park, she meets Jesse (Jasper Newman), and the two share an immediate connection. While she embarks on a relationship with him, she sees her parents’ relationship disintegrate as they argue about religious guidelines and the way they raise Hala. Eventually, it becomes impossible for Hala to exist between her two separate “lives.” In 14 minutes, the film somehow captures more than the aforementioned feature films do in their entirety." Jaimeo Brown Transcendence - Be So Glad

Jaimeo Brown Transcendence - Be So Glad

Get 'Work Songs' on iTunes: http://ift.tt/1SjmmKG Director: Fons Schiedon Co-Producer: PostPanic A meeting between musician Jaimeo Brown and the New York-based filmmaker found the two of them shared similar views on how they liked to work, particularly in creating room for improvisation and intuition. With a new release for Brown coming up, a collaboration on a promo was the obvious next step. It was clear that Schiedon and Brown wanted to combine and reference elements from different eras and genres. And they shared a preference in working quite organically, combining high end technology with tactile, DIY methods. It was important not to lose the humanity in production, whilst also maintaining a sense of 'imperfection' within the filmmaking. Schiedon explains, "The video applies that notion of imperfection, for instance, by using a partly practical, partly animated, approach to bring the skeleton dancer to life. There are smoother ways to do it, but none of them are this much fun." On the track "Be So Glad," from Jaimeo Brown Transcendence's breakthrough sophomore album "Work Songs", Brown and Chris Sholar (the production team that comprises Jaimeo Brown Transcendence) sample inmates from the Parchman Farm Prison in Mississippi in 1959. "Be So Glad" is a prime example of common repetition in work songs creating a type of mantra that changes the feeling of labor -- a vehicle to transport people from the high walls of despair to personal awakenings of freedom. "'Work Songs' is one of the most exciting, experimental, and important albums set to drop this year." - VICE Jaimeo Brown Transcendence is the product of long-time collaboration between Brown and co-producer/guitarist Chris Sholar (who won a GRAMMY® Award for his work on Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne). Both emerging from a generation that appreciates the jazz in hip-hop, the artists with whom this duo has collaborated with speaks for itself. Brown, as drummer, has sat behind the skins for Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Q-Tip, Carl Craig, Kenny Garrett, Geri Allen, and Bobby Hutcherson, among others. Sholar's work as guitarist and producer has spanned the likes of Beyonce, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest, Robert Glasper, D'Angelo, Just Blaze, Common, Dr. Dre and more. More than just music, Jaimeo Brown Transcendence is a movement, a moment, and an imperative: home to a variety of collaborators and contributors, from different eras and across the globe. History, art, technology, the future... this video perfectly captures the themes that are at the core of Transcendence. AN HONEST LIAR - Truth and Deception in the Life of James "The Amazing" Randi

http://ift.tt/1KQVi0r NY Times Critic's Pick AN HONEST LIAR is an award-winning feature documentary about the world-famous magician, escape artist, and world-renowned enemy of deception, James ‘The Amazing’ Randi. The film brings to life Randi’s intricate investigations that publicly exposed psychics, faith healers, and con-artists with quasi-religious fervor. A master deceiver who came out of the closet at the age of 81, Randi created fictional characters, fake psychics, and even turned his partner of 25 years, the artist Jose Alvarez, into a sham guru named Carlos. But when a shocking revelation in Randi’s personal life is discovered, it isn’t clear whether Randi is still the deceiver – or the deceived. Featuring James “The Amazing” Randi, Deyvi Peña, Adam Savage, Penn & Teller, Bill Nye, Alice Cooper, Ray Hyman, Michael Shermer, Richard Wiseman, Jamy Ian Swiss, Banachek (Steve Shaw), Michael Edwards, Alec Jason, Uri Geller

VOID

VOID

Void is a meditation on the psychology of the creative mind and the choices we face when we create. Originally a labour of love, then shelved as a horrible failure and now reborn as an odd remix of old and new. It has been an ongoing project for almost 3 years which I have abandoned and restarted many times. When returning to the piece after not working on it for months, I would often reevaluate everything and start over. A vicious cycle where everything would look dated when I was ready to put in the time. My struggle with being satisfied with the creative eventually became the common thread for the short. The art of creation can be as frustrating as it can be rewarding, and maybe it has to be a bit of both. Pure and raw creativity goes a long way but self-editing is just as important and far more difficult in my mind. This project is like a stream of conscious inspired by the things and the art I find aesthetically pleasing. Through a string of creative scenarios we slowly make our way from the light and into the darkness. David Carson - All For a Few Good Waves

David Carson is arguably the world’s most well known graphic designer. All For a Few Good Waves is a short documentary portrait offering a raw glimpse into the life and work of David, an uncompromising genius, who refuses to be anyone but himself. After a career as a top ranked pro surfer and high school sociology teacher, he rose to prominence in the 90’s after art directing Transworld, Beach Culture and Ray Gun Magazines before going on to start his studio. With no formal design training, Carson took the design world by storm, upending conventions and breaking traditional rules he didn’t even know existed. —————————————————————————— Credits: Starring: David Carson + Ola Carson Produced and Directed by: Dress Code (dresscodeny.com) Executive Producers: Dan Covert + Andre Andreev Producer: Tara Rose Stromberg Cinematography + Sound Record: Andre Andreev Edit + Color: Mike Cook Assistant Camera: Mercy Lomelin Production Cordinator:  Rose Glaeser End Titles: Mike Cook + Mercy Lomelin Music + Sound Design: You Too Can Woo Shot on Location in Tortola, BVI over a couple years on: A Red Epic, a GoPro Hero 3, and a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera

Rest Stop

Rest Stop

REST STOP is a comedy short which follows Meredith, a young backpacker desperate to find meaning in her life, when she meets a mysterious stranger in a dingy British service station...claiming to know her. The film stars Ben Willbond (Horrible Histories, Bill) and Cari Leslie (Boom Chicago) and was directed by award-winning filmmaker Kate Herron. Kate wrote REST STOP with Canadian comedian & writer, Monica Heisey whose written work has appeared in the New Yorker, Huffington Post and Playboy. She is currently Editor-at-Large of Broadly, VICE's sister site. Her debut novel, "I Can't Believe It's Not Better" was featured by both the New Yorker and recommended by Lena Dunham. REST STOP was mentored on the LOCO London Comedy Film Festival with Sky Comedy mentor scheme and had it's World Premiere at the BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying FLICKERS: RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL where it was nominated for the OSCAR-QUALIFYING prize of BEST SHORT and took home the GRAND PRIZE for BEST COMEDY SHORT. It has gone onto to screen worldwide at festivals including CAMBRIDGE FILM FESTIVAL, AESTHETICA, UNDEWIRE and CUCALORUS. It was featured by the BFI Blog as "What to see at the London Short Film Festival." "Writers Kate Herron and Monica Heisey delight in the contrast between their chirpy but gauche backpacker and the mundane snooze-fest of the dimly lit rest-stop. A sharply written comedy two-hander." - What to see at London Short Film Festival, BFI Blog. The Story of Zero - Getting Something from Nothing

The Story of Zero - Getting Something from Nothing

What is zero? How did it come about? Hannah Fry tells the story of how zero went from nothing to something. Once upon a time, zero wasn’t really a number. Its journey to the fully fledged number we know and love today was a meandering one. Today, zero is both a placeholder, and tool, within our number system signifying an absence of a value, and as a number in its own right. But it wasn’t always seen as that, and it still doesn’t act quite like other numbers. Can you divide by zero, for example? Hannah Fry explains how zero came about, from its origins in ancient civilisations, through the resistance it faced from the Roman numeral system, to being the cornerstone of calculus. Igneous Skis

Igneous Skis

In 1996, Mike Parris worked as a robotics engineer at Carnegie Melon. While he developed technology used on the Mars rover expeditions, his friends began building custom skis that would allow them to ride the terrain Jackson Hole had to offer. Mike pitched in with his mechanical expertise now and then to help design the equipment and process, ultimately leaving behind his career in robotics to create handcrafted skis that would forever leave a mark on the ski industry. Igneous Skis was founded by Mike's friend, Adam Sherman, and is now operated by Mike Parris in Jackson, WY where he customizes only 100 pairs of skis each season, carefully tailoring each pair entirely by hand. This Is a Generic Presidential Campaign Ad, by Dissolve

This Is a Generic Presidential Campaign Ad, by Dissolve

Created entirely with stock footage from Dissolve, This Is a Generic Presidential Campaign Ad reunites the team behind This Is a Generic Brand Video. As the 2016 presidential election cycle has progressed, dozens of candidates have released their campaign ads. And though there are a few differences from the left wing to the right, they have a lot in common. In fact, these predictable, formulaic approaches to video editing have drawn comparisons to our own all-purpose corporate promo, This Is a Generic Brand Video, written by Kendra Eash: http://ift.tt/23hua1m. We didn’t think it fair that media commentators had to reference our corporate video — why not give them an actual generic campaign ad? So we asked Kendra to provide her wry, absurdist take on presidential promotion. The result is a blatantly pandering, verbally vacuous piece of political parody. See and license the clips used at http://ift.tt/1MSqI9i. Read more on our blog at http://bit.ly/presidentialplatitudes. Voiceover by Bobby Butler.
