This is the story of the peculiar relationship between some of these people, the small town folk, and the massive radio telescope in the middle of it all, aimed at the sky above. The societal pressures on my mother to hide her abuse and her desire to protect me ultimately created a situation where I was subjected to the same societal pressures. Through a conversation as adults, my mother and I learn to understand each other and support one another. A ritualistic evening of self-care spirals into claustrophobic self-scrutiny when a woman discovers a grey hair. Silvering is my BA(hons) Animation graduate film, completed in 2021 at Edinburgh College of Art. Original music by Carla Sayer and Tim du Feu, and sound design by Hervé Girardin. Silvering premiered at EIFF and has since screened at over 40 festivals, including at the BFI Future Film Festival, GSFF, Encounters and NFFTY - picking up nominations for best animation and special mentions. It was the recipient of the inaugural 'Young Scottish Filmmaker Prize' and an RTS Student Award.

Copyright dissolves; distinctions between original, imitation or inferior reproduction erode. No origin, no responsibility, no clear bias - just a primordial soup that can be transformed into any form without questioning knowledge systems and hierarchies. In this silent, but radical restructuring of entire industries, the artist becomes a template of a future that is digitally assembled from a myriad of fragments of the past. In the experimental film Hysteresis, Seidel’s analogue drawings and digital processing merge with the queer performance of Tsuki, whose movements improvise between Ballet, Butoh and Berlin club culture. In a fusion process, her image is recorded, fed back through Seidel’s devices and then projected onto her body. An expanding digital sphere beyond labels and identifications with gender, culminating in dehabitualised neural patterns and reconceived fabrics of intimacy beyond rational understanding. In a final step, the resulting sessions are edited and dissolved by machine-learning strategies into a constant flow of pulsating images and folded spatial configurations. The resulting Muybridgean silhouettes, baroque textures and bursting structures fluctuate between the second and third dimensions, unfolding free-floating gestures that unhinge the laws of nature. Meanwhile, delicate abrasions of the pictorial frame build bridges into contradictory concatenations of reality. The soundtrack by Oval (Markus Popp) incessantly corrodes this dense web of associations, threatening to dissolve the remaining fragile points of reference. At a time when an overriding predictability is forced upon us all, the film celebrates the disruption of pattern recognition and the artistic corruption of results induced by artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning. With Hysteresis Seidel explores new grounds in his experimental practice and collaboration. Unveiling a frenetic, delicate and flamboyant visual language, that speaks to the hysteria and hysteresis in this historical moment. The artist wants to open a discourse about these unique modes of AI creation – with implications beyond the film and other media, to that singularity, where history collapses into a single point in the present. Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Rose B. Simpson, from the "Everyday Icons" episode in the eleventh season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series. "Everyday Icons" premiered in April 2023 on PBS. On a rare snowy day in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, artist Rose B. Simpson assembles a maquette for a new public sculpture. The three small figures are models for the 12 concrete sculptures that stand nearly 11 feet tall at the Field Farm meadow in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Gazing forward with soft expressions and eyes that are hollowed through the back of their heads, the sculptures embody ancestors watching over the landscape. Simpson’s work stems from these moments of observation and connections to the past, emphasizing the processes of making and becoming in which we discover new ways of being and of healing. Working quickly and intuitively in her studio, the artist shapes her clay sculptures by hand using a technique she developed called “slap-slab.” Each of her clay sculptures is embedded with fingerprints and other evidence of the artist’s hand, leaving traces of the act of making that produced the work. “I’m trying to reveal our deep truth,” says Simpson, “and that deep truth is process.” Rose B. Simpson was born in 1983 in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, where she lives and works today. In 2007, the artist received her BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts, and in 2011, she received her MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design. Simpson’s work reflects on the multilayered history of her home in New Mexico and of the United States, exploring modes of empowerment and resilience that carry traditions into the future. Working across media, the artist finds new ways to connect past and present, express experience and identity, and contemplate freedom and strength.
