Headed East

Headed East

Tired of city life and in search of adventure, my friend Fraser and I left London on two motorcycles with a plan to drive to Budapest and back. We wanted to leave technology behind, to wild camp, cook our own food, reconnect with others and importantly ourselves. The journey took two months, crossed 10 countries and covered a distance of over 10,000km. This personal film shot on 16mm documents our motorcycle journey into the wild. Shot and Directed by Jack Harries & Fraser Rigg Edit by Jack Harries Sound Mix and Design by Sashko Micevski Music is Corn by Nils Frahm Lab Services by Kodak Labs London Shot on 16mm film in France, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, The Netherlands. With special thanks to Michael Ho, Dieter Deswarte, and Dylan Hewitt The Book For the past two years, we’ve been working with the Stanley James Press on designing the Headed East book. 100 pages of 35mm photos, 16mm film scans, journal entries from the road and a pull-out map. Random walks

Random walks

-SYNOPSIS- The visual world rests on interviews, the sound of which follows through the film as a narrative. We follow the story of five immigrants in Budapest, two of whom still lives here as refugees. We touch upon various levels of their refugee life from the banal to the very severe. In economic theory random walk means that stock market prices cannot be predicted. thus, each time, the price had a fifty-fifty chance of closing higher or lower than the previous day. -FESTIVAL APPEREANCES- 2016 / 2nd Hungarian Film Week - official selection Mediawave Film & Music Festival - official selection FESA / Festival of European Student Animation - panorama program BuSho / The Budapest Short International Film Festival - panorama program Fantoche International Animation Film Festival - panorama program GRAFIXX Festival Antwerpen - panorama program 23rd International Animated Film Festival KROK - official selection KLIK! At home

I am Nick, a freelance photographer. In the past 10 years I‘ve been travelling and photographing around the world. What I realized, though, was that I had gradually stopped seeking new destinations. I found a place that offered me a sense of stability and warmth where my inspiration and creativity amplified. Nature in all its’ forms was still surrounding me: Snowy landscapes, deep canyons, lakes and rivers, vast forests and of course the sea. In the end, I think I found my destination, a place that has nurtured me, and has always been so close to me. That makes me feel home! ----- Produced and directed - Nick Kontostavlakis Editing - FKY https://vimeo.com/fky Cinematography - Nick Kontostavlakis & Antonis Kitsikis Text - Cheryl Rock Voice - Dimitris Kaplanis Camera - Antonis Kitsikis Time-lapse - Nick Kontostavlakis & Nikos Pomonis Drone - Nick Kontostavlakis ----- Music - Tony Anderson ----- Camera Equipment : www.anima-vision.com & www.whitebalance.gr ----- You can follow me at: Facebook - facebook.com/nickkontostavlakispage Instagram - instagram.com/nickkontostavlakis Website - https://ift.tt/2hks0MH Google + - plus.google.com/u/0/102206608476266130067 ----- Some technical info: Shot mostly with Canon C200 + Angenieux 30-90 EZ 1 DJI Inspire + X5s Nikon Dslrs for timelapse.

META: Immunity

META: Immunity

Director's Statement: The term “I do what I love to escape” is something that Aaron and myself disagree with. We believe it is quite opposite of that. Our belief being that when you are doing what you love, you are completely tuned in and as close to reality as you can humanly be. It’s like a form of meditation. When Aaron is at the bar, he is tuned out. He is having troubles facing reality but knows exactly what he has to do in order to heal himself. That is where we coined the term Immunity. It is an act of healing. So Aaron leaves the bar and his demons behind in order to find himself, which is through riding his motorcycle. Overall, we had a very strong crew. This was a passion project so I was fortunate to have some very talented people pull some huge favors to help complete this. I couldn’t have done it without a solid team behind me. I would like to give a huge shout out to the boys at WZRD Media and Ryan Sheets from Sheets Studios for believing in me and truly allowing our vision to become a reality. Why Credit Cards Have That Annoying Chip | Planet Money | NPR

Why Credit Cards Have That Annoying Chip | Planet Money | NPR

Ever wondered why the chip on your credit card made it slower — or where the chip and stripe on your credit card even came from? Here's the story. In the mid-'60s, the airline industry had a problem. The 747, the first real jumbo jet, had just been introduced. There were more passengers at the airport than before. More passengers meant longer lines. And that was especially bad because this was the era when customers paid for their tickets right there at the airport — often by credit card. Back then, paying by credit cards was a whole ordeal. The airlines had to call up the bank manually in order to confirm the card. With lines growing, the airlines needed a faster process. So they called IBM to ask for help, and that's where our story (which also features some French fraudsters and a hippie inventor) begins.

APERTURE

APERTURE

Belluno is a small town in the north east of Italy, surrounded by the Dolomites. It's my hometown. I came back here after having spent a few years in London. Not too many, just enough to see my hometown so different compared to the place I had left for the city. Everything here has changed and I changed too so… old news I guess. The thing I miss the most about London is walking around without a destination. I’ve spent days discovering new places, looking for the smallest detail here and there. I tried to do the same here but it didn’t work out. It actually felt sad, I’m still not sure why. I had to do something to reunite with this place. I’ve spent 11 days forcing myself to document every angle of Belluno. I did this taking pictures of its walls with a small window open on something that represents my relationship with my hometown. This video documents this action. After all the hard work I am still having the same mixed feelings about this place and living here, but at least I’ve discovered that every wall, no matter how many we build, has a crack or a scratch. And this is a relief. ***** Directed by Emanuele Kabu Sound design by NoDolby (Michele Scariot) https://ift.tt/2KjQl2J Mixed and mastered by Marcello Batelli. Szagos Hörigekkók - Eper (Strawberry)

Szagos Hörigekkók - Eper (Strawberry)

A fun psychedelic music video made for the Hungarian children band Smelly Hamstergeccos. The Smelly Hamstergeccos (2012-2016) was a Hungarian children rockband established by a 14 and 10 year old brother and sister. Their songs and lyrycs are as intuitive and powerful as the best children drawings. This psychedelic music video was created with the same fun mentality using colour crayon drawings to present the band’s members and the song’s hero, a strawberry. CREDITS: Directed and designed by: Péter Vácz Band members: Fanni & Márk Csernovszky Creative producer: Rita Domonyi Producer: József Fülöp Produced by: MOME Anim STRAWBERRY (Lyrycs) A strawberry breaks my heart as he lies in his green bed hiding away from me. He doesn't want me, he doesn’t want my bite, he who's a strawberry. I'd like to reach him but I can’t.

ENOUGH | The Empowered Women of Korogocho

ENOUGH | The Empowered Women of Korogocho

Beatrice Nyariara lives in Korogocho. It's widely considered to be Nairobi's most dangerous slum. More than 150,000 people are packed into the shanty town which is less than two square kilometers. Crime is high. Gangs are active. Addiction is rampant. A while back, men in her community started to attack the "grandmothers" of Korogocho at night. Most of the women attacked are sexually assaulted, and some have been killed. The men believe that the elder women were less likely to be HIV positive. They also saw them as vulnerable. A few years ago, Beatrice decided enough was enough. It was time to fight back. It was time to develop a community. The result of that decision empowered the group, and taught their community to respect them, value them, and to know how to be there for them. Together, they are taking back Korogocho. Look Up

Look Up

High-stakes arboreal therapy for the nature deficit disorder you probably have. Once a year, adventurous arborist and tree climbing instructor, Tim Kovar takes a select few on a climb up one of the tallest tress in the world — a summit he says less people have attempted than Mt. Everest. For an unforgettable way to battle nature deficit disorder and re-connect with the Earth, we purchased a couple carabiners and brought way too much camera equipment 180 feet up an 850-year-old California redwood called “Grandfather” to see how squirrels dream. Whatever happens, don't forget to look up. Captions available in English, Spanish, Italian, German, French & Russian. Let us know if there’s a language you’d like to see.

SAND IN THE SKY

SAND IN THE SKY

Traveling with a baby is an interesting thing. They add all sorts of challenges to any trip you do. Long flights, strollers, nap schedules, and car seats all seem to pile up and complicate what is supposed to be a relaxing vacation. Sometimes, you may even find yourself wondering...is all this effort worth it for a baby who won't even remember the trip? All these experiences and memories will eventually disappear, like a fading dream. So is it worth it? I hope so. I hope these experiences were somehow baked into Ollie's tiny cells as his body was developing. So as the dream fades away, he is left with some form of inspiration that may re-surface later in life. Maybe it will help him appreciate nature...or make him want to explore beyond the horizon? I have no idea...but I hope so. This video is a result of me grappling with these questions, and trying to document this point in my son's life. Ollie was 8 months old when we traveled to Hawaii. Exactly 1 year later, we sat him down and "interviewed" him about his trip. By this time, I assume his memories had already faded to a dream like state, so I wrote a script that reflected that. Cape Town is currently suffering from a water crisis due to a number of different factors. The residents are having to cut their daily water usage down to a limit of 50 litres per day per person and on the most part are collectively achieving this. The management of this crisis however is critical to the success of this wonderful city. Thank you to Ray De Vries for the voiceover and insight in to the current situation in Cape Town. In the forest it gets tangled in the trees And it has no wings for it to fly I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, but this is your fate Away you go. To the sea Go ahead. Go try and live your life Once I called a man and woman to take care of the Earth But they liked each other, now they love each other. What am I to do? The man screams all day And the woman weeps all night I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, but this is your fate. Away you go. To the land Go ahead. Go try and live your life One week since I made the world, and already so much to do Four seasons in a year. Switching day and night everyday Storm clouds gather and lightning strikes Volcanoes explode and cover the land No matter how I try, I cannot control it I don't even have anyone to pray to I gave humans reason, emotion and freedom Believing they would take good care of the world But they devoured all of life on earth And keep asking for more and more Away I go. Hip Hop Cafe

Hip Hop Cafe

Born out of his Jamaica sound system roots, DJ Kool Herc changed the face of the planet in the 1970’s resourcefully creating something out of nothing called Hip-Hop. Heavy bass, scratching, break dancing, rap, graffiti art and dress code, mixing old flavours making new fresh statements are at the core of the culture's expression.
