Nazaré - Big Wave Surfing

Nazaré - Big Wave Surfing

In November 2017 I flew over to Portugal from the UK with huge waves inbound for Nazaré. In the morning of the big swell, Andrew had a nasty wipeout and broke his back and was rushed to hospital after being rescued by the jet ski team and brought to the shore. I'm not sure who all the surfers are but please tag them and I will add them in the credits. If you are interested in how this was filmed, there will soon be a 'Behind The Scenes' video coming. The Monolith

Pioneering NYC artist, Gwyneth Leech, enters a midtown art studio only to find that her skyline view will soon be blocked by the construction of yet another high-rise hotel. But as the perspective out her window permanently shifts, so does the artist's point of view. The Monolith is directed by Angelo J. Guglielmo, Jr. (The Woman Who Wasn't There), produced and shot by Andy Bowley, EP'd by Andrea L. Smith. Rosie Walunas adeptly employed the Adobe Creative Suite to bring over 200 pieces of Leech’s beautiful artwork to life using Animation, Motion Graphics and Compositing. Leech has exhibited her work across the United States and the UK in museums, commercial galleries, public art spaces, and alternative venues. OY "MADE OF LOVE"

OY "MADE OF LOVE"

This is the music video for the song "Made of Love" of OY's [oy-music.com/video] new album Space Diaspora. AFRO PUNK (US) writes: Ghanaian-Swiss singer Joy Frempong and producer & musician Lleluja-Ha are back from outer space, and they’ve brought a new sound with them that might make the future a little more colorful—if we listen. Making up the duo OY, the video to their latest single is as catchy and eye-popping as the message is powerful. In the experimental clip directed by Moritz Reichartz, Frempong chants off different nationalities as head-like shapes of various colors gyrate against each other while floating on a clear sea, leading to a climax where the heads congregate in front of a giant wall, making so much love that the partition is destroyed. Resynthesis - Max Cooper

Resynthesis - Max Cooper

Max Cooper: I had a lot of high speed train journeys recently and I love watching the wires seemingly dance around outside the window. I wondered if we could be getting fooled by a similar process during our usual experience of time, and thought it would be an interesting project for a music video set to the music created during the same journeys. The wires outside the window are static but they appear to move because of our motion past them. Perhaps our usual experience of movement could be explained by a similar process, where time is a physical dimension into which everything grows, with the present as the surface of this inflating structure. It ties in to a lot of physics ideas which are very common, and I thought it could make for an interesting music video, if I could find someone who might be able to pull it off! Luckily for me, one of my favourite visual artists, Kevin McGloughlin had already been experimenting with linked techniques and ideas, and he's gone to town on it with a multitude of techniques and editing precision to create something pretty special. And yes, there's certainly a nod to the original time-stretch slitscan effects of Kubrick's 2001. I wanted to show the transition from our normal experience of time to a stretched out past as a physical structure when viewed from an alternative perspective outside of the dimensions we're usually constrained to. One other interesting thing about this model of time is that it helps with some mind-pickling metaphysical conundrums around the sense in which the past exists. In this model it literally exists out there behind us as a physical 4D structure. If we could travel outside of our growing surface somehow and went back to the past it wouldn't be much fun though, we'd just find solid lifeless stretched out versions of ourselves. For the music I wanted to bring these ideas of frozen moments of the past into play, and no better excuse to get stuck in with the Prophet 6 on some lush classic analogue synth sounds for the main chord sequence, and plenty of nob noodling for a dance of modulating sounds around the main sequence. I wanted to keep it fairly sparse to let the chord patch be central, and just focus on trying to make every element, including the percussion, warp a little, so you can either listen to the track from a distance and hear the harmonic ideas, or delve in to find all sorts more hiding in there. Kevin did an amazing (and painstaking) job of warping the video to sync with the audio detailing. If you'd like to receive exclusive music, mixes, video and news you can sign up to the site at http://ift.tt/2zmlBJl Kevin McGloughlin: Max Cooper and I discussed ideas about space-time before embarking on the Resynthesis project. We were on the same page for the most part, though, working with Max is always insightful and he enlightened me with some really fascinating ideas about space - time. I was delighted to once again collaborate, especially with reference to 'time', which is such a relatable and unavoidable part of everyone and everything. The track is really beautiful, I saw the visuals in the music quite clearly from the offset. I could hear the 'time stretching' in the melodies and synths and I was greatly inspired by it. My aspiration in this piece was to create a journey for the viewer, a passage through space and time, in an effort to represent time as a dimensional structure. I aimed to convey existence as a solid component of time, an effort to glimpse the idea that our past still exists out there in a stretched, distorted dwelling.. I wanted to capture a human / mortal essence of time, displaying brief impressions of human interactions and activity, traveling in time. All the fundamental assets were captured employing photography and realtime footage. I stretched time in both 3d and 2d space using a wide variety of time displacement techniques, ranging from 'in camera' work to quite laborious post production work. Fun Fact..Some of the clips contain exactly one googol videos playing simultaneously. (using a method I devised some time ago, ie.the second last very short clip) Most of footage/photography was shot in Dublin Ireland, with additional shots from Co. Sligo. Working with Max always makes for an interesting time. http://ift.tt/2Bi7feu http://ift.tt/2txAqtA http://ift.tt/2yDPzYy http://ift.tt/1CxR98Z

500 MILES

500 MILES

TEXT 500MILES TO 71777 TO DONATE AND SUPPORT OUR MISSION The purpose of this innovative short film is to start a new, universally-understood conversation around the necessity of struggle, challenge and perseverance as they relate to creating meaning in one's life - without one, you cannot have the other. The 500 Miles film communicates the importance of this concept by telling the story of the un-purposed wild mustang and the un-purposed veteran, following both as they learn to face and navigate challenges, with the ultimate goal of discovering what their greater purpose in life is. For these mustangs, the arduous 500 mile journey through New Mexico and Arizona was their purpose-defining challenge, but we all have our own version of a "500 mile journey". It's the moments in life when we choose to buck up instead of give up. When we choose to take the unbeaten path instead of the easy road. It's the moments that force us to take a hard look at ourselves, and the decisions we have been making, and decide if we have been letting life happen to us, or for us. So, the question is: What's your 500? http://ift.tt/2znE5JP Characters: Grant Golliher Ramon Becerra Brendon Clark Russ Lewis Landon Ames Austin Mandlebaum Mike Reilly Micah Fink Director: Josh Fletcher Cinematographer: Michael Eldredge Producer: Cale Montrone Associate Producer: Chris Douglas Field Producer: Tony Hagedorn Art Director: Souk Mounsena

SEATREKKING -Trekking the Ocean

SEATREKKING -Trekking the Ocean

“We travel along the coastline for several days. All we need fits in our waterproof and floatable backpacks. We set out to explore nature and what we carry with us is reduced to a minimum. We dive deep into the ocean and swim along wild cliffs, discovering untouched beaches where we spend our nights under the clear sky.” - Bernhard Wache, Founder of Seatrekking. It has been almost twelve years since Bernhard and a group of friends started developing a new sport they ended up naming SEATREKKING. It began with the simple idea of spending as much time as possible near and in the ocean. Over the years Seatrekking became more than a sport. It became a philosophy. 9 Quarter Circle

9 Quarter Circle

Sandwiched between the borders of West Yellowstone and Big Sky, the 9 Quarter Circle Ranch is a rustic collection of log cabins and stables cradled in a valley of the Rocky Mountains. It’s here one finds Kameron Kelsey, the third-generation steward of the 9QC. The Kelsey family pride themselves on their adherence to tradition, as the ranch exists in something of a time warp, its practices mostly unchanged over the past 70 years. Due to the high elevation of the ranch, weather during the winter months is exceptionally perilous. Every fall, the ranch’s horses are taken down to a lower elevation pasture to live out the cold months in more favorable conditions. Each June, come rain or shine, the Kelseys, along with a group of a dozen or so wranglers, family, and friends, come together to push the herd 20 plus miles back up to the ranch, in a near sacred ritual they dub “The Round Up”. Of all the 9QC practices, this one is perhaps the most antiquated, and is the one the Kelsey family are most proud to preserve. It’s an exhaustive three-day marathon, one that takes them across a variety of terrain. Would it be simpler to gather the animals and truck them up to the ranch? Absolutely, but this isn’t about being easy. It’s about holding onto tradition. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Directed by: Kristopher Rey-Talley Produced by: Rad Roubeni, Kristopher Rey-Talley & Phil Pinto Executive Produced by: Jinhee Chu, Rad Roubeni Photography by: Ryan Dickie, Sam Wootton, Josh Goleman, Kristopher Rey-Talley Edited by: Alex Camilleri, Kristopher Rey-Talley, Ed Yonaitis Color by: Mike Howell Sound Design by: Greg Tobler, Colin Alexander Aerial Photography by: Brendan Murphy

It Is My Fault

It Is My Fault

This is an intense audio-visual animation that has the potential to trigger seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised. After the compression of the spiritual world by the force of regulation, there will follow a series of emotions such as introspection, violence, self-destruction, and untangling. This work utilizes the own approach of the digital medium itself to deconstruct, to form the subliminal synesthesia visually and to create a fictional experience for the mind. 精神世界在面对强制规则化的重压后,爆发的一系列有关反思、暴力、自毁,排解的情绪。作品利用数字媒介自身的解构方式,形成潜意识的视觉通感,创造虚构的情感体验。 Director: Liu Sha Original Music: Ma Yao Sound Design: Zhai Xiaofei 2016 "It Is My Fault" is this week's Staff Pick Premiere! Using gripping rotoscoping techniques the latest film sees Red Bull’s young gun demonstrate unique tricks including world-firsts in freestyle mountain biking: Bum Slide, 270 Rim Bonk, Hitching Post Flip to Feet, Decade Tsunami, Superman Backflip to tuc no-hander. Within the film, an advanced editing technique ‘rotoscoping’ was used by Cut Media to enable the audience to see what's going through Matt’s head as he prepared for seemingly impossible tricks. This required an intricate process, cutting out countless sequential frames, in order to create the floating ‘traces’ seen in the final production.

Handsome and Majestic

Handsome and Majestic

In recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Resilience on November 20th, 2017 and the start of Trans Awareness Week, we are proud to release our short documentary entitled “Handsome and Majestic”. A multiple award-winning 12 minute film that has played at over 25 festivals worldwide from Manitoba to New Zealand, this short documentary profiles Milan, a 15-year-old transgender boy growing up in the northern Canadian city of Prince George, B.C. As a recently transitioned transgender boy, Milan deals with discrimination from his peers and teachers at school, as he seeks to find other kids like himself. His parents are open and supportive throughout his transition, and his sister Lulu never questioned that Milan was her brother. However, at his elementary school, he must face the lack of education, intolerance and even assault. When Milan meets another transgender boy in his neighbourhood, he finally finds someone his age who understands and shares his experience. With the support of his friends and family, Milan has become a role model and an advocate for trans individuals in his small community and beyond. As part of the release of the film, the filmmakers are also running a “GoFundMe” campaign in order to raise funds to get Milan fitted for a suit in New York City by renowned tailors Bindle & Keep, who specialize in suits for non-binary and trans people. After “Handsome and Majestic” screened alongside “Suited”, a feature documentary about them at Hot Docs Festival 2016, the tailors have generously offered to make Milan a suit of his own. LIGHTS - 光

LIGHTS - 光

"A new born light enters the world, but slowly begins to adapt, to fit in, conditioned by expectations, until the light fades away slowly and it's too late to turn back to it's true self." Lights is a simple metaphor that visually examines all those feelings, dreams and possibilities that we unconsciously let go of during our life as we slowly adapt to what surrounds us. Step by step we leave behind our true selves, something that slowly fades away in the background, like a shadow we only half remember.  When our time comes to move on, if we finally look back to what could have been, we may think "what if..." Osborn’s use of parallel editing, particularly in a sequence that alternates between a downstairs kitchen and an upstairs bathroom, earns its high-strung pathos.” --Erik Luers, Filmmaker Magazine OFFICIAL SELECTION: Denver Film Festival Dallas International Film Festival Maryland Film Festival * Starring Lindsay Burdge, Jade Lane, and Ava Briglia Written and directed by Chris Osborn Produced by Chris Osborn Breanne Thomas Adam F. Adventure Not War

Adventure Not War

This spring Stept Studios had the privilege of joining Stacy Bare, Robin Brown, and Matthew Griffin, three U.S. Army Captains on a heartfelt journey back to where they served in Iraq. 'Adventure Not War' takes us into mountains of Iraq revealing a seldom seen, beautiful underbelly in a place scarred with devastation. With this film we take a new approach to war, inviting veterans to rewrite their histories in places where they served and heal wounds deeper than flesh and bone. We hope this film will help promote peace and a universal understanding that beauty can replace hatred if we strive for adventure, not war. NYC Layer-Lapse

NYC Layer-Lapse

Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein's relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse. After releasing "Boston Layer-Lapse" a few years ago, I was able to quit my engineering job to focus on time-lapse and film making. New York City was the obvious subject for my next film, the immense skyline was ideal. However I was facing an unknown creative challenge: when I created Boston Layer-Lapse I manually animated layers because I only had about 30 layers in a scene, in New York I was making layer-lapses with 100-300 layers so I needed some method to help me automate my workflow. Luckily I have an engineering background I can lean on, so in early 2016 I started learning scripting in after effects, and began writing code to create different layer-lapse 'looks'. To create a layer-lapse effect, I am assigning a unique equation to hundreds of buildings simultaneously. For each frame, every building is calculating and deciding which time of day to reveal. One example of a script that yields a ‘look’ are the waves of day or night that move through some of the shots in this film. To achieve the ‘look’ I can set parameters like the speed at which the wave moves across the screen, how rapidly each layer will switch from day to night or vice versa, and I'll often use a random sinusoidal function to create a subtle oscillation inside the wave itself. Now I've probably lost half my audience but for those of you still reading, the final step is linking an action or a script to a piece of the music. One way I've found this can be done is creating a set of audio triggers for a song, so that every note or beat triggers a change. By linking a certain script to each of these triggers one can create computer generated layer-lapses that are animated in response to music. Admittedly, this film is still a combination of mathematical and manual animation but my goal is to create a layer-lapse film where all the animations are simply decisions made by each layer after analyzing the music and the script it was assigned. By making layer-lapses run on mathematics, there are also some really cool avenues to create interactive physical or virtual art installations where a person could actually touch and manipulate a layer-lapse scene in real time. The further down the rabbit hole of layer-lapses I go, the more opportunities for experimentation I am discovering. I love the process of creative exploration and hopefully my audience gets something from it too, thanks for watching! But the reasons Allen started using the drug run much deeper. In spite of taking measures to reduce its long-standing record as the No. 1 incarcerator of women in the country, Oklahoma keeps locking up women at more than twice the national average. Oklahoma incarcerates 151 out of every 100,000 women, often given harsh sentences for nonviolent drug crimes. This has taken its toll on several generations of women in the state.
