Queen Harold

Queen Harold

I was in Sierra Leone filming a project for Freetown Music Festival and I knew I had to capture some of the things bubbling under the surface of this humming capital. Freetown has a unique energy, beautiful, bustling and inspiring. I had been talking to Kwaku Kamara, a local and one of the production team about the underground gay scene in Sierra Leone, it was something he had heard of and wanted to know more about as a gay man himself. It is through Kwaku that I met Harold and Jiva and after a few conversations we began to talk about what life is like for them and their friends in Freetown. I was struck by their incredible resilience, joy and determination in fighting for their LGBTQ rights in a country where homosexuality is still illegal. I wanted to make something that simply told their story about strength, life and a need to love freely in Freetown. Scenes from a Brain

Scenes from a Brain

Sound by Justin Cavenagh Pictures by Jason Poley A very personal, personal project. An attempt to visualise some of the raw emotions experienced during depressed periods. Started during a bad time, and completed later. Meant going back to examine and re-experience feelings. Talking openly about feelings is hard. Making pictures has always come more naturally, looking back has been a constant coping mechanism. Along with some less healthy ones. Justin came in towards the end of the process, re-scoring something so personal isn't an easy task. He exceeded expectations, somehow creating a track that Jason felt like he’d know for decades. If your struggling with your brain, please contact your GP and get a mental health plan. (In Australia at least, international friends look to your healthcare systems.) The Moon's Milk

The Moon's Milk

Seven and a half years in the making, The Moon's Milk is an entirely handmade stop motion animated short about a time when the moon was close enough to be reached by ladder. Narrated by Tom Waits, the film chronicles the last expedition of Captain Millipede and his crew to harvest the milk seeping from the craters. The action take place between the gravities of two heavenly bodies, which further complicates the attraction between the characters. Longing, missed signals, and mishaps lead to the enchantment of the heavens with music. themoonsmilk.com

Music and skateboarding have always gone hand in hand. Nick Pourfard makes the ultimate connection by creating guitars out of recycled skateboards. Nick combined his passions as an industrial design student teaching himself woodworking, illustration, and 3D design, ultimately turning that project into a business, Prisma Guitars. We spent a few days with Nick in his workshop in San Diego to document the process and learn more about his overall design philosophies. We’re hitting the road with goodbrands, purveyors of damn good weed, this summer to round up California’s best local culture in some of our favorite spots. One - An Apollo 11 homage

One - An Apollo 11 homage

In celebration and appreciation of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing Mission, we created a fully animated film: One - An Apollo 11 Homage. We would like to share this latest project with you. The anniversary will take place this coming Saturday, the 20th of July 2019, the moment the first man ever landed on the moon 50 years ago. In our opinion this has been one of mankind’s biggest achievements. It shows the ability of dreaming big, unification and teamwork. This mission shows that humanity, together, can achieve the impossible. As 600 million people around the globe watched this milestone, for the first time all the people on this Earth were truly one. — This film is a tribute to this achievement and a creative exercise to make a contemporary animation, showcasing the highlights of the Apollo 11 mission. We are proud to share that the film will be showcased by ESA, Discovery Network, ARTIS the Amsterdam Royal Zoo, Dutch Public Broadcast Channel and Bright during celebratory events around the 50th anniversary. — Credits: Directed by: Marvin Koppejan Produced by: Woodwork Amsterdam Music & Sound Design: Max Gramser Animation, Edit & Composite: Marvin Koppejan Additional 3D shots: Tim van der Wiel Ernst Noort Thanks to: Nina Fabel & Jonas Koppejan, Moa Nordin, David Gieling, Pedro Botsaris, Simon van de Rijdt, Marthe Duits & Marina Kegan.

"BOARD SHOP" Animated Short by Patrick Smith

"BOARD SHOP" Animated Short by Patrick Smith

Hundreds of Skateboards, Snowboards, and Surfboards are choreographed at 24 boards per second into an ebullient montage of flickering imagery, illustrating the history, artistic beauty, and physical consequences of board culture. Director Patrick Smith created this short film as an homage to his favorite activity and culture. “Board Shop” Juxtaposes hundreds of vintage, classic, and contemporary designs and styles into a trance inducing maelstrom of 24 boards per second imagery. Along for the ride are objects that signify the consequential elements of board culture, namely, broken bones, crutches, and spinal gurneys.. Each object is a historical part of this vibrant world-wide cultural phenomena. Over the course of one year, Smith collected thousands of photos, images, and objects, compositing them together sequentially and choreographed to beach percussion. The result is a cacophony of illustrations, graphics, shapes and sizes. Each board represents themselves within the trifecta of distinct terrain: Concrete, Water, and Snow. Dedicated to all those riders out there, young and old. Healthy and injured. Once in place, the board culture never leaves our DNA, and the tools are forever a part of our collective memory and cultural experience. Automotive Trend Visuals

Automotive Trend Visuals

For this year’s trend book presentation of the AUTOMOTIVE COLOR TRENDS® we endeavored on another explorative process together with our forward-thinking and progressive client, the design team of BASF's Coatings division. Based on the client’s global research into aesthetic, social and technological movements, we started our design development on the outset of merging digital conditions and physical phenomena into a yet-to-be-defined space of its own. The result of this process are three distinct stage-like installations, all sharing a formal language that shows the collaborative creative approach. They could be described as three-dimensional collages of unconstrained expression, with an experimental shape language blended with concise graphic elements, all held together by sensibly controlled compositions. Ahead of 2020, Beware the Deepfake

Ahead of 2020, Beware the Deepfake

“We are crossing over into an era where we have to be skeptical of what we see on video,” says John Villasenor, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Villasenor is talking about deepfakes—videos that are digitally manipulated in imperceptible ways, often using a machine-learning technique that superimposes existing images or audio onto source material. The technology’s verisimilitude is alarming, Villasenor argues, because it undermines our perception of truth and could have disastrous consequences for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. “I do think deepfakes are going to be a feature of the 2020 elections in some way,” Villasenor says. “And their shadow will be long.”

Our process was simple: We entered each national dining chain, asked the bartender for whatever they deemed their location's "flagship Margarita," and individually scored the drink based on presentation, balance of flavors and value for money.

How to make Sushi

How to make Sushi

During the autumn of 2018, I designed a couple of frames based on the premise of a Sushi-chef. I grew really fond of them and a simple story kind of evolved from that. From just being a couple animation-tests, to a 2 minute short-film. Always being inspired by Japanese animation, this turned into an emulation of many years of reading manga and watching anime. Also seeing how the amazing craftsmanship and graphic design was used in Isle of Dogs definitely influenced me a lot while making this. Mixing that with my own style of design animation, it finally took this shape. To develop a fitting score and sound design for this quirky project, I worked closely with Luke Brown from The Soundery.  Thanks to a lot of consultation and translation from Taishi Yagyu, we could hire the wonderfully talented VO-artist Yoshi Amao, who delivered a performence me and Luke couldn't have hoped for. Giving life to this character we had just seen the upper body of for about a year. Full Behance project can be found here: https://ift.tt/2S1mPUA

The Office of Missing Children

More than 2,600 kids were separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border under President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” family separation policy. What happened to those children? Reveal’s investigative reporting team looked at facilities across the country to answer that question. After being separated from their parents at the border, some of the children were held in office buildings operated by a company without a child care license. This is the story of a child who stayed in those offices. for more info visit revealnews.org/children

Sigrid - Mine Right Now

Sigrid - Mine Right Now

I was supposed to direct the new music video of Sigrid, but I ended up playing Sigrid in her new music video. We spent over one month planning the shoot which took place in mountains in Bulgaria. Our crew of over 40 people arrived a few days before the shoot to build all kinds of wonderful sets, but the night before the shoot everything changed. We found out that Sigrid wasn’t going to make it to the shoot due to several delayed and cancelled flights. A crew of over 40 people were left ready to shoot but with no artist to film. We could’ve decided to call it a day and just go home, but instead I was forced to take on the role of Sigrid and play her throughout the entire video. A funny irony as I usually come up with ideas but never have to play them myself. As you can imagine, everything is terribly out of sync and my dance moves are so awkward they make you cringe, and my biggest fear is singing in public - you’ll never ever see me doing Karaoke! However that wasn’t the only thing that went wrong, during the shoot we had big weather storms, our sets collapsed, we got chased from the mountain by park rangers, there was a serial killer on the loose in the area, my dog passed away and so much more. The shoot quickly turned into the FYRE festival of music videos but we decided to just keep on going and going and make a video for Sigrid. Big thanks goes out to my amazing team who all had the nerves, patience and humour to go through with this. I hope you enjoy it. We the Bathers

We the Bathers

We The Bathers takes the viewer on an arresting and intimate journey around the world through a disparate and beautiful series of biographical vignettes. It invites us to step quietly into the interior lives of a group of people to listen to their private ruminations, testimonies and personal revelations. Director Phoebe Arnstein’s authentic and sensitive eye asks the viewer to consider how our bathing rituals might be shaped by our identities, and intends to show how water can unlock something powerful in us all. Water is life. vimeo.com/lushtvonline Viewers are advised that We the Bathers joins people in their most private moments and therefore contains scenes of a sensitive nature and are partial to full nudity. Ben Raemers Forever

Ben Raemers Forever

Skate with your friends. Talk to your friends. Most of all, tell them you love them. Thank you for always being yourself, Ben. We miss you. "Lifelong friends are the greatest treasures a person can find in life. The true ones know more about you than your parents and siblings, yet rarely disapprove. I have met my best friends through skateboarding and plan to take those friendships with me to the grave. From my uncomfortable teenage years where I wanted to fit in, to the later years where I knew I didn’t, my skate pals were always there for me. If you slam, they help you up, if you pull something rad, they scream the loudest and when you’re bailing something needlessly they tell you to “Do It”. But all relationships take work, so next time you get pissed at a buddy because they can’t skate or the have to work, put it in perspective. Every time you say “Later”, it could be forever. Savor every moment as if it were your last." - Jake Phelps

BOOKSTORES: How to Read More Books in the Golden Age of Content

BOOKSTORES: How to Read More Books in the Golden Age of Content

Bookstores have always driven me crazy. So much to read and so little time! And now with our lives chock full of content--Netlflix, podcasts, social media, and the 24 hour news cycle--when the hell are we supposed to find the time to get through a book? This dilemma has haunted me for awhile. So I decided to make a film about it, hoping to find a way through my bookstore anxiety--a way to re-balance my content diet in order to read more books. Making this film brought me to a place of clarity. I hope it does the same for you.
