Most red, blue, or purple flowers contain pigments called anthocyanins, whose colors are sensitive to pH (the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution). As a result, when we immerse a blue flower into an acid or basic solution, its color is likely to change to red in acid condition, or to green or yellow in basic condition. In this film, to get the most dramatic effects, we immersed all flowers in saturated sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions and used macro lenses and a microscope to capture their glorious color transformations. We've crossed paths many a times. We've even been introduced through mutual acquaintances once or twice, in fact we finished off last year's Quik Pro sinking beers and dancing to her music, but we never truly met Lee-Ann Curren until winter hit our shores. For the record, winter this year was long. In fact we might still be in it. The Basque Coast can suddenly become a very small place, a handful of locals left to endure the storm whilst fraudulent neighbours head for the slopes. Those of us that remain naturally form a bond. A mutual understanding and respect for our perseverance and stupidity to see the winter solstice through. It's during these months we became friends with Lee-Ann. She's not hard to miss. When you’re the daughter of arguably the best pro surfer of all time, it’s no easy feat to go unseen. It's even harder to carve your own path yet Lee-Ann's done just that. Despite sharing her offspring's roots in both surfing and music alike, she's managed to forge her own fortune, content in achieving her own goals, regardless of the status quo. We decided to document our time with the 28 year old (along with her adopted border collie Bowie) and discussed music, growing up in the Basque Country and the pressures of living up to her heritage. Experience the beauty of Mt. Everest at night in time-lapse. While most climbers slept, I attempted to capture some of the magic that the Himalayan skies have to offer while climbing to the top of the world. These time lapse Images were captured as high as 6200m (camp 2) above sea level on Mt. Everest. We slept at 6000m for three consecutive nights on the summit of Mt. Lobuche East waiting for a glimpse of Everest from that vantage point. Around 11pm on the 2nd night, the skies opened up and the top of the world revealed herself in all of her glory. No where else on the planet have I ever seen the Milky Way so clear, so vivid and so very much alive. It takes a great deal of discipline to stay up all night capturing the magic for the world to experience. Cameras freeze.Shutters freeze. Batteries freeze. Humans freeze. The high altitude environment is debilitating at best. Your body is taking a constant beating by the low levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. The higher you climb of course, the worse this becomes. And yet... this is heaven on Earth for me. This is my comfort zone. This is where I feel alive. This is where the combination of my love for imagery, astrophotography, storytelling and connection with the mountains all intersect. I toss logic out the window on clear nights and run all of my cameras until all batteries are exhausted, CF cards are filled and the sun re-emerges for yet another beautiful day. It’s my oxygen. It fuels me. Energizes me. And keeps me in a flow state. On a more human and less technical note: I’ve kept these images hidden for almost 4 years. They were created in 2014 and 2015 - the two deadliest seasons in Everest history. Many lost their lives and I was at ground zero both years. I’m not sure I’ll ever un-see what I saw those two seasons during and after the avalanches. Somehow I felt keeping these images hidden showed respect for the fallen. The images at camp 2 were created right after the 2014 avalanche that claimed the lives of 16 Sherpas. We were trapped above the area where 16 died at Camp 1 and 2 and had to remain in place for three days, unable to assist in the evacuations. Shooting the night skies helped with the helplessness we all felt. In 2015, everything you see in this video was captured days before we got hit by the avalanche at basecamp during the Earthquake. No one can ever be prepared fo such devastation. It’s taken a long time to work through the loss and perhaps somehow, releasing these images is my way of fully letting go and remembering the beauty, the wonder and freedom that comes along with climbing the world’s tallest peak. Transsiberian Dream - 7.923 km from Beijing to Moscow

The Trans-Siberian Railway, another dream come true! The world's longest railway line starts from Moscow and runs 9,288 kilometers through seven time zones to Vladivostok. In May 2017 I was able to document this unique 16-day trip aboard the legendary Zarengold train together with my colleague Christopher Schmid. We traveled the route in the opposite direction and deviated a little from the original route (Trans-Mongolian Railway). Our journey took us along 7,923 km (nearly 5,000 miles) of rail from Beijing via Erlian, through the Gobi desert to Ulaanbaatar, on to Ulan-Ude, along Lake Baikal to Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan and finally to Moscow. From the rickshaw ride through Beijing, a night in a Mongolian yurt, a bath in the five degrees Celsius cold Lake Baikal and the legendary vodka tasting aboard the Zarengold train - I sum up the highlights in my new short “TRANSSIBERIAN DREAM”. Every Mother Counts, a maternal health care non-profit dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere, presents CON MADRE. The short documentary film highlights the importance of midwifery care in one of the most dangerous countries in Central America to give birth, Guatemala. The film follows Erika and Dora María, students training to be the first university-level midwives (parteras) in the country, as they return to their hometowns in the rural, Indigenous communities of Guatemala. Once there, Erika and Dora María continue their education under the mentorship of traditional midwives, comadronas. Erika and Dora María work with the comadronas to continue their culture’s traditional practices of birth and natural medicine, while also incorporating the new skills and training from school and health centers. Both women share their own personal stories of empowerment and dedication to helping women and families in their communities. Erika, who is pregnant, also plans a home birth under the guidance of her comadrona, Azucena, a powerful leader in her community, and with the help of her fellow midwives at school, including Dora María. ELYSIUM

One of the most powerful films I’ve seen as a young boy is one most people have never heard of. Cryptically titled ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, this unique film employed only fantastically executed visuals backed by a hypnotic, dramatic music score to tell a story. It was a strange, experimental film, too hard to describe with words, but I was completely mesmerized by it. There was no (obvious) plot to follow, it had no actors or songs, but despite this, ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ was one incredibly immersive experience. Some of the most unique aspects of this film were its groundbreaking time lapse sequences. I was still very young and could not understand how they were filmed, but I do remember the impact they left on my impressionable mind. Many years have passed since then and I’ve chosen to pursue the art of photography and filmmaking as my career, of which time lapse cinematography takes its biggest share. I don’t know if this is a blessing or a curse, because shooting, processing and time lapse films take an immense amount of effort and patience, a fact unknown to most. But seeing the finished product, after all that hard work, still fill me with immeasurable joy and satisfaction. This motivates me to keep on learning in order to get better at the craft. ‘Elysium’ features the skylines of Dubai and Abu Dhabi which are among the most imposing and photogenic ones in the world. The quiet giants, soaring high into the Emirati skies are a source of awe and inspiration for any dreamer or photographer. What gives this film a dreamlike quality however is the elusive winter fog and its mysterious interaction with the tallest structures. Viewed from a high angle, the fog turns the cities into a grand canvas of visual poetry which could only be expressed with a language of time lapse cinematography. The fog’s formation is very hard to predict and therefore, it’s not easy to film. I was forced to spend many sleepless nights chasing the foggy conditions from various rooftops across the UAE. When the fog finally formed, and all elements came together, it was like witnessing magic. Watching the fog as it rolled between and over the buildings was such a haunting and utterly fascinating sight. It was a quite a logistical and technical challenge to capture all scenes I needed for a film, but it was all worth it. Millions of visitors come to Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the most visited national park in the western United States. However, very few ever get to experience the Grand Canyon by way of the Colorado River. Stretching from Lees Ferry at Marble Canyon, AZ, through the inner gorge graced with geology dating as far back as 1.8 billion years, all the way to Diamond Creek, just before the river gives way to Lake Mead, these spectacular 225 miles of whitewater rafting are only accessible by guided commercial motor trips and private rafting permits. Although over 6M visitors come to the Grand Canyon every year, only a small fraction gets permission to raft the river, mainly during the late Spring, Summer and early Fall months.  Production of this video was made possible by a commercial rafting partner Grand Canyon Whitewater, check them out at http://ift.tt/2eRstqc! Grand Canyon was recently awarded the Dark Sky Park status by the International Dark-Sky Association. This project is being produced in collaboration with International Dark-Sky Association (darksky.org), a non-profit fighting for the preservation of night skies around the globe.
